What time is the Grand National on UK?
Grand National TV channel – The Grand National will be broadcast live on ITV1 and Racing TV. Viewers in the UK can also tune in on ITV’s streaming service, ITVX. ITV’s coverage of Grand National day will start at 2pm. Earlier races are scheduled to take place at 2.25pm, 3pm, 3.35pm and 4.15pm before the big one takes place at 5.15pm.
What time is the Irish Grand National on?
IRISH GRAND NATIONAL TOP WEIGHT RUNNER – For 2023 the top weight in the Irish National is Royale Pagaille from trainer Venetia Williams. Royale Pagaille has been one of the top-weighted horses since the entries for this year’s race were announced. And it’s by a long margin with the next heaviest horse, Espanito Bello on just 11-03.
The nine-year-old, who is also entered into the Aintree Grand National, will be partnered with jockey Charlie Deutch and goes into this race having just run in the Cheltenham Gold Cup. This will be the horse’s first time running in Ireland, and the Irish National will also be the longest distance the horse has attempted throughout its career at 3m5f.
Careerwise, Royale Pagaille has notched up some decent wins, including the Peter Marsh Chase at Haydock last year. This year has been a quieter affair, with only one run before Cheltenham, as the Gold Cup was clearly the goal. In a race that doesn’t really favour the heavier-weighted runners, can Royale Pagaille tear up the stats and give Venetia Williams an Irish Grand National win? Time will tell.
- For 2023, the Irish Grand National will be held on Monday, April 10th at 5pm at Fairyhouse Racecourse.
- The race is always held on Easter Monday! Usually, the Irish National follows the Aintree National with plenty of dual entries, so it’s always interesting to see which way connections will go with race plans.
However, for 2023, there are six declared Irish runners who are also still on the runners list for Aintree. Most notably, that includes Royale Pagaille. The other five dual entries haven’t made the cut for Aintree and include Defi Bleu, Fakiera, Punitive, Gevrey and Milan Native.
- Of course, there was no guarantee that they would all actually make the line-up for both, but undoubtedly, some tough decisions had to be made.
- Like in Britain, there is an Irish Handicapper, and once the weights are allocated, the process for getting 30 runners to the starting line is very similar.
- There are entries, weights, and declaration stages, though all of that is over a much shorter period of time.
In fact, there are less than two weeks from the weights to the race. The final declaration stage for the 2023 Irish Grand National was Saturday, April 8th 2023. The final line-up of 30 runners with three reserves was announced, and the going has been described as ‘Soft’.

Is the Grand National delayed?
There is an ‘indefinite delay’ to this year’s Grand National after protesters managed to get onto the course. The race is set to be the biggest and best yet as the 175th running of the famous race, but there have been a number of protests. Police estimated around 70-80 protestors from campaign group Animal Rising were at the entrance to the racecourse ahead of the day’s action, where they were greeted by a heavy police presence, The Mirror reports,
When it does get underway, a field of 39 will contest the the world’s biggest steeplechase at Aintree, with today’s race anticipated to be the most-watched Grand National in history, Wales Online reports, But just before 5pm some protesters managed to break through the ring of steel to make it on the racecourse and tried to glue themselves to the second fence.

There were claims that activists were trying to “glue themselves” to the obstacles.

Who is the Favourite to win the Grand National?
Grand National runners 2024 list – No sooner does the 2023 National end then the speculation begins over the confirmed Grand National 2024 runners and riders. Initially 85 horses entered the race this year, so we can expect to see a similar number being declared in February, with that number gradually dwindling following the Cheltenham Festival.

He often buys one or two horses in the build up to the race every year, often paying hundreds and thousands of pounds. The winner of the Grand National receives £500,000. As with all races, as well as a riding fee of around £170, jockeys receive a percentage of any prize money that is won. That figure generally ranges from 8.5 to 9 per cent of winning prize-money over jumps, meaning the Grand National winning jockey could receive as much as £45,000.

With the tote, you’re not betting against a bookie; your stake goes into a pool, and like the lottery, your win depends on how many other winning tickets there are. The on-course bookmakers are all different and it’s worth shopping around for the best odds on each race. You can usually find them in front of the grandstand or by the rails.

You can bet a long way in advance or in the minutes just before the race, though the odds for Grand National horses often shorten just before the race begins. On Saturday morning, he was doing press-ups on the floor of the medical room, to prove to the racecourse doctor that he had fully recovered from a fall on 6 April which aggravated an issue with his shoulder.
And even though Brian Hughes, the reigning champion over jumps, was on standby for the ride if Fox failed to pass the doctor, it is hard to imagine that any replacement could have produced as polished a performance as Fox in a dramatic, ever-changing race.

Yet even as he shot five lengths clear on the turn back towards the stands with two to jump, the eye was irresistibly drawn to the rider in yellow and purple colours, sitting quietly in his slipstream. Corach Rambler was pulling double in second place as they went over the second-last, and jumped into the lead over the last as Mister Coffey’s stamina ran out in a couple of strides.
He faded to finish eighth of the 16 finishers, with Vanillier, Gaillard Du Mesnil and Noble Yeats filling the frame behind the impressive winner. Other owners include a Scotsman who retired to Australia and wanted a connection to his home country, and a man who bought in to the horse while searching for a focus after the death of his wife. Why is the Grand National so late in the day?
What date and time is the Grand National? – In recent years, the Grand National start times have been put back to 5.15pm and it is now shown on ITV1. The later race time is mainly to attract more viewers as when the race was run around 4pm there were generally a lot of other sporting events – most notably football – going on at that time too.
- So now you can watch the Grand National at 5.15pm on Saturday 13th April 2024.
- The Grand National Festival’s highlight is undoubtedly the 40-runner showpiece, but there are actually a host of top races spread across three days at Aintree each April.
- The tapes go up on the 2024 Aintree Grand National meeting on Thursday 11th April, and the start time for the first race is 1.45pm, with ITV1 broadcasting the biggest races, and many leading bookmakers also providing free streaming options.
The action continues over the three-day event, with Ladies Day on Friday and Grand National Saturday providing the pinnacle of the meeting. With bars and restaurants open all day, plus corporate boxes and suites offering lunch before the racing starts, many racegoers will flock to the track early to make the most of their day.
