More than half of 26 to 35-year-olds who took part in the survey identified M&S as a “superbrand”. Mr Cheliotis says High Street brands that lose sight of their target shoppers can “float around and eventually die”. However, he also warns there was a risk of alienating potential customers by focusing on a certain type of person.

We continue to refine and improve our plans to deliver our target of a 50% reduction by 2030. To better match catalogue and product display to customer demand, with the objective of a substantial reduction in food waste, we will roll out new forecasting, ordering and space, range and display systems.

We are also looking at areas where we can remove best-before dates such as fruit and vegetables, focusing instead on product quality to determine shelf life. We continue to innovate in our approach to reducing food waste by creating delicious new products from our surplus food.

In 2021/22, we donated 56% of our edible surplus food from our store operations. This came to 6,231 tonnes out of a possible 11,288 tonnes of edible surplus. This is a new initiative to capture and recycle textile waste in Bangladesh by bringing major brands, manufacturers and recyclers together.

The objective is to find successful circular processes that reduce textile waste and generate economic benefits in Bangladesh by accelerating the fibre recycling market. The initiative focuses on Bangladesh because it offers a significant opportunity to enhance recycling of waste cotton from the country’s large garment-producing sector.

Cotton is a fibre with high recycling potential if the right recycling infrastructure is available to create new textile fibre. We are working with eight factories in Bangladesh on the project. In the first year, up to February 2022, the factories started reporting on their waste and we connected more than 95 tonnes of cotton waste from the factories with textile recyclers, keeping this pure cotton fibre in the textile supply chain.

Can I exchange an item without a receipt?

Consumer Law From dreadful Christmas jumpers to gadgets you simply don’t want, we all get presents that we wish we hadn’t at this time of the year. It might be the ‘thought that counts’, but sometimes you simply want to get rid of something and exchange it for a gift you truly do want.

So what are your rights? Can you simply take it back to the shop, or are things a little more complex? Gifts bought on the high street The assumption is that as a consumer you are automatically entitled to return goods to high street shops as long as it’s within a reasonable amount of time, and that you have proof of purchase such as a till receipt.

However, shops are under no legal obligation to accept goods if they are being returned because you don’t like them. The only reasons they are legally bound to accept returns under the Consumer Credit Act is if the goods are not as originally described, could be regarded as ‘not fit for purpose’, or are faulty.

To make life easier for customers, though, most high street stores will accept returns and either offer an exchange or refund as a matter of goodwill, but they are not contractually obliged to, even if you do have the receipt. If a retailer does have a returns policy, then you’ll usually have between 28-30 days to return an item and get a refund or exchange.

Often, shops will extend this period immediately after Christmas, so you do have a few weeks to make up your mind whether you really do like that scarf or not. Proof of purchase This can be a tricky one with Christmas gifts, especially if they’ve been bought for you by a relative.

  1. Opening a present on Christmas morning and then asking, “Did you keep the receipt?” will probably not be well received! However, there’s no getting away from the fact that proof of purchase is an important part of the process, and without it you may not be able to get a refund or exchange.
  2. Bear in mind that if the present was bought using a debit or credit card then any refund will go straight onto that card, rather than to you.

So your most likely resolution will either be a credit note or an exchange. Does it have to be in the original packaging? Technically no, but some retailers will only exchange or refund an item if it is returned in its original packaging. So keep the box your gift came in, just in case.

Faulty items If an item is faulty then you’re on much firmer ground. Under the Consumer Rights Act as long as you return an item within 30 days of purchase you can do so without a receipt and still have the right to a full refund. If you don’t want to return or exchange the item then you can ask for it to be repaired.

You also have much longer to do this – up to six months. However, this only applies to the person who bought the item, and not the recipient. So if your iPod does stop working or your sports tracker stops tracking, ask the person who gave it to you to try to get the situation resolved directly with the retailer.

  • Presents bought online Surprisingly, you may find that you have even more protection legally if your present was bought online, ordered over the phone, or was bought through mail order.
  • Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations, the purchaser has the right to cancel an order up to 14 days after it was placed.

This ‘cooling off’ period extends up to 14 days after the goods are delivered, so there’s plenty of time for a recipient to change their mind and ask a purchaser to return the item. The purchaser can do this and expect a full refund, even if there’s nothing wrong with the goods.

  • I would assume that the receipt is the proof of contract you entered into when buying the good from the supplier. Without the receipt you have no proof that you purchased the goods from said supplier so they would not be oblidged to refund. If you have a valid receipt and the goods are faulty (ie do not perform the task for which they were intented) then the supplier, under the Sales of Goods Act, is oblidged to refund. The Act states that the goods should be ‘fit for purpose’ and if they are not then the contract is not binding. Interestingly, if you are given a product as a gift, even if you have the receipt, the supplier is entitled to refuse to refund as the contract they entered into was between themselves and the purchaser, not the recipient of the gift. However most companies do refund or at least exchange without a receipt as a goodwill measure.

  • No. There are billions of contracts made each year. Apart from consumer credit agreements, there is no requirement for the sale of goods to be in writing. The vast majority of contracts for sale of goods and services are by word of mouth. Such contracts are just as valid and as legally enforceable as written contracts. Three things are required to strike a sale’s contract. Agreement to sell. Agreement to buy. Agreement on price. Once these three things are in place, and the money & goods title change hands, consumers’ rights detailed in the Sale of Goods Act come into force; and lack of a receipt will have no affect on these consumer rights, whatever the Seller contends.

  • Strictly speaking, no, at least not in relation to goods sold to a consumer by someone acting in the course of a business. The law in England is governed by the Sale of Goods Act 1973 and, in a consumer sale, terms are implied into the contract that the goods are of satisfactory quality and meet their description (known as implied terms). If the goods supplied are not of satisfactory quality, the buyer has a right to reject them (at least within a reasonable time) and to receive a refund – there is no right to an exchange of goods. The Act does not stipulate that a receipt must be produced. However, in a court of law, he would have to prove that he had purchased the goods, but a bank statement or other proof would be equally acceptable as a receipt. If a seller in a consumer sale insists on seeing a receipt, it is arguable (perhaps) that he is purporting to exclude liability under the implied terms of the contract, particularly if other proof of purchase is offered. This exclusion clause would be void and unenforceable, under the Unfair Contracts Terms Act 1977. Also, if such a statement were made in writing (eg in a shop notice, or on a product such as a crisp packet) this could be dangerous for the seller, as it is a criminal offence to purport to set out the rights of the consumer without saying that the buyer’s statutory rights are unaffected.   • The relevant law is actually the supply and sale of goods act 1994, which brings together the previous legislation and contains amendments and additions to the sale of goods act 1979 and the sale of goods act 1982 (Scotland). As others have replied, there is no requirement under the act to supply a receipt to prove that a contract exists between buyer and seller, nor is there any requirement to provide physical evidence of any kind (except the faulty/unsatisfactory/ill-described goods of course). In a dispute between the parties a court must decide the facts of each individual case, and a receipt (or other physical document) is simply additional evidence to support the ‘word of mouth’ of the buyer, which must be balanced against that of the seller, assuming the seller cannot prove that the goods were not bought from him, say by showing that such goods were not available on the date claimed. What most brands aren’t telling you, though, is what happens after you return what you buy, and this is quickly becoming the apparel industry’s dirty little big secret. “Here’s something you probably didn’t know: Many of those returns aren’t going to make it back into store inventory and onto shelves.

Instead, they will rack up a giant carbon footprint as they wind their way through a network of middlemen and resellers and, at each step, a share of those goods will be discarded in landfills.” (Source – Quartz ) Yes, you read that right. When you return clothes, the manufacturers don’t just dust them off and put them back up for sale.

In far too many cases, apparel returns find their way to landfills. So while it might be more convenient for a shopper to buy a pair of jeans in three different sizes, keep the one that fits, and send the other two back, most people would probably think twice if they knew that the two pairs they are returning could end up in a landfill.

Luckily, some startups are helping apparel brands do the right thing and preventing clothes from finding their way to a landfill near you. One of those companies is The Renewal Workshop which works with brands like North Face, Prana, NAU and many other brands committed to reducing the incredibly negative environmental impact of apparel returns on the environment.

Burberry, for example, admitted to burning (yes, physically burning) clothing and accessories that didn’t sell, and fast-fashion retailer H&M admitted to burning 15 tonnes of clothing that they decided were not in good enough condition to recycle. The reality is, not surprisingly, that brands could do a much better job of reducing waste, but it could cost them money and time to find a solution, and the sad reality is that far too many companies are taking the easy way out.

According to Statistica, the eC ommerce share of total retail sales in the United States as of February 2021 for apparel and accessories is a whopping 37.9%. With apparel returns accounting for 25% for online sales (source – McKinsey ), the impact of such staggering rates of returns on the environment needs to be addressed.

FREE IN-STORE RETURN OR EXCHANGE – You are always welcome to return or exchange for free in any H&M store in the US, excluding Puerto Rico. You have 30 days to decide if an item is right for you. We offer exchanges and refunds on garments, swimwear (with hygienic seal), and unopened beauty products with a receipt within 30 days of purchase.

  1. Returns of H&M HOME items purchased online cannot be returned in our stores and must be returned by mail only.
  2. We will issue a refund to the original form of payment.
  3. Please allow up to 14 days for your transaction to process.
  4. For free in-store returns, bring the e-receipt attached to your shipping confirmation email or the Order Form along with the item(s) you wish to return/exchange within 30 days of purchase.

After 30 days, you will be eligible for exchange only at the current selling price. Items exchanged must be of equal or greater value. Your refund will be issued in the form of original payment, such as the credit card used for the order. Shipping and handling costs are not refundable.
