Delft is one of Europe’s largest and busiest IKEA stores. Covering breakfast, lunch and dinner the restaurant serves 1,200 breakfasts, 600 cold dishes, 3,000 hot meals, 4,000 hotdogs and 500 staff meals every day, meaning the catering and waste management operations have to be efficient, organized and offer an ergonomic solution from 5 am through until 10 pm each day.
IKEA Delft is a concept store with thousands of customers a day. All concepts of IKEA are first tested in Delft before rolling it out in all stores around the world. Besides testing of the concepts the IKEA Delft store is also a training centre for employees of IKEA worldwide.
Rendisk has helped Delft to optimize their dish handling process with both logistic solutions for dishwashing as with food waste solutions. “With the Rendisk Flex WasteDispo we are reducing our waste volume by 80%, saving money and securing even lower prices for our IKEA customers.”, Otto van Daal, Food & Beverages Manager, IKEA Delft.
With state of the art equipment from Rendisk in both dish handling logistics and waste management, IKEA has been able to reduce their costs and waste output at an astonishing rate. Otto van Daal: “By introducing Rendisk to our store we are now achieving savings of more than 800 Euro’s per week!” By implementing such systems and innovations IKEA pass these benefits onto customers by sustaining low prices or even reducing them further.

Why is it so hard to get out of IKEA?
But we still shop there anywaywhy? – Image: http://www.truthfacts.com/ T here’s a common joke about visiting IKEA on a weekend. It’s always rammed, you spend hours there, and buy a sack of things you didn’t intend to get. IKEA is laid out in such a way that there’s a plotted path through the store, unlike most stores which are open-plan and you can move around and browse the items on sale at will.
IKEA’s layout means every customer has to walk past every item on sale before they can pay up and leave. IKEA is the world’s largest furniture retailer and they use 1% of all commercially used wood globally to make their products. It’s a running joke because people find it frustrating. But they continue to shop there — in fact, IKEA is the world’s largest furniture retailer and they use 1% of all commercially used wood globally to make their products.
So why is it so popular despite its well-documented downsides? In her article Meatballs and DIY bookcases: The psychology behind Ikea’s iconic success, Catherine Clifford says the reasons for its popularity are:
pricetrademark Scandinavian designthe ‘retail therapy’ experiencethe cafe foodthe connection people feel with an item of furniture they built themselves.
Image: http://www.truthfacts.com/ It’s a basic requirement for business that people like the product and the price. But I think it’s the psychological effects — the user experience — that keep people coming back. It’s a bold move by IKEA, to force their customers round a predetermined route in store, which sacrifices some of the user experience in favour of encouraging more sales.

Has anyone stayed in IKEA overnight?
People stranded at IKEA store during snow storm, had ‘fun’ overnight stay Several people were stranded at the IKEA store in Aalborg, Denmark, following a heavy snowstorm and were forced to spend the night there. About 12 inches of snow fell on December 1 night while the home furnishing store was about to be closed.
- As the weather turned bad, about 25 IKEA staff and six customers were forced to stay in the store overnight.
- The fun part is that they were able to recline on the comfy sofas and beds, which were spread across the store.
- People did not panic amid the snowstorm, rather they stayed calm.
- We were able to make it nice and cozy,” said the store manager.
People picked and chose the bed they wanted to sleep in from the showroom display. It was also a chance for them to try out the choices. IKEA store manager Peter Elmose said, “It was a once in a lifetime experience. I have been working in IKEA, and I’ve never experienced this before.” Before retiring to bed, those stranded had more fun.
They watched TV, played games and ate Swedish cinnamon balls in the staff cafeteria, said Elmose. They enjoyed watching Christmas movies and a Liverpool-Everton soccer match using a big projector. “We had some hot cinnamon buns, hot chocolate, and coffee. There was even some beer,” said Elmose as quoted by Insider.
They were also delighted to wake up to coffee and more cinnamon buns in the morning. The store also gave a pillow freebie as a souvenir for those who had to spend the snowstorm in the store overnight. Elmose also said that the bedsheets and other things used by the group were changed.

Can I bring my own bag to IKEA?
IKEA St. Louis opens in just 3 short days, and I am over-the-moon! I’ve waited for this day for years (perhaps decades, if I’m being truly honest) and now it is finally here. So I’m deep in the planning process for my first official IKEA St. Louis shopping trip.
Whether you’re going to brave the crowds at the IKEA St. Louis Grand Opening, or you plan to go once the crowds diminish a bit, or you shop at a different IKEA altogether, the following tips will help you make the most of your next IKEA shopping trip.1. Understand the IKEA shopping experience. Shopping at IKEA is like shopping nowhere else.
To understand what I mean, let’s start by talking about the store layout. The IKEA St. Louis store is two levels. On the top level you’ll find the Showroom along with the Restaurant & Cafe. The showroom is designed to inspire shoppers by showing IKEA furnishings and accessories in real-life settings. The St. Louis Showroom features 46 room settings and 3 complete homes. These complete homes are pretty amazing. They’ll give you tons of ideas for creating an organized, functional and beautiful home even when space is at a perimium. If you believe a lack of space is preventing you from being organized, these homes will inspire you to think differently. 2. Browse first. Shop second. For the most part, you’ll do the majority of your actual shopping on the first floor of IKEA after browsing the Showroom. You can pick up a some of the smaller items in the Showroom, but the bulk of your shopping will be done on the first floor in the Marketplace and Self-Serve Furniture area. 3. Plan ahead. It’s a great idea to do some planning before venturing to an IKEA, especially if you want to stick to a budget or you have a specific item to purchase or organizing / decorating dilemma to solve. Browse through the catalog and make a list of items to check out and/or purchase. 4. BYOB: Bring your own bag! IKEA doesn’t offer disposable plastic bags during the checkout process, so bring some reusable bags from home or purchase a durable, multi-purpose IKEA blue reusable shopping bag.5. Know what IKEA provides. IKEA makes available all sorts of amenities to enhance your shopping experience. 6. Plan to stop at the Restaurant & Cafe. If you’re headed to IKEA for the very first time, plan to make a visit to the Restaurant & Cafe. It’s a great way to process all the ideas you’ll be bombarded with during your stroll through the showroom. Plus you’ll get to try some pretty delicious Swedish food, including Swedish Meatballs and new veggie balls. (Can’t wait to try those!)
What is the secret exit at IKEA?
How to Get to the Checkout ASAP – Ready for another weird door? Next to the shopping carts, there’s a door. It’s unmarked but says “Keep clear at all times.” Though it seems like an employee-designated door only, it’s a shortcut to the checkout! Can you bring your own IKEA bag to IKEA?
Bring Your Own Bag – We have one or two old IKEA bags we purchased who knows how many years ago. Whenever I go back, I always make sure to either bring those bags, or some other bag that I can pack my items into. You can fill a yellow IKEA bag in the store but they will not allow you to bring it through checkout. You can use a cart for larger items, and they also have carts for the yellow bags. What I’ve started doing is once I go in, switch out the yellow bag with my blue IKEA bag, fill it with my goodies, and easily stroll through checkout and to my car. So, who is ready for a trip to IKEA?? Full disclosure, despite my ability to quickly shop through IKEA, with a toddler, while 8+ months pregnant, without issue and with minimal stress, any time I mention the four letter word to Brit, he responds with his own four letter word. To each their own. Thanks for visiting!
