What is the TW used for?

Seeing ‘TW’ a Lot? This is What it Means – There are two parts to the title of this paragraph. One, what TW means, and two, why we’re seeing more of it these days. TW expands to a lot of things. But on social media, the more popular expansion of the acronym is Trigger Warning.

• As the expansion hints, this is an acronym that warns.
• Though it can be used trivially, it’s generally reserved for serious content that can be disturbing in one too many ways.
• TW alerts the audience on what they can expect further into a content format (posts, carousels, videos, reels, long-form content, etc).

It is used in captions, comments, posts, etc. The reason why it’s “trigger” warning and not just “warning”, is because the content it’s warning against can be triggering to all/many/some audience. TW informs the readers/viewers to be prepared for what’s to come.

A TW sign highlights the type of trigger in the content that follows. If it’s a video from a war zone, then, the TWs here are war, violence, death, and blood (depending on the content). If it’s a post about rape, then, TW is rape, sexual violence, abuse, etc. Just a ‘TW’ or ‘Trigger Warning’ sign does more harm than good.

It grips the audience and they don’t know what to expect (that’s not a very nice feeling). Hence, along with a TW sign, it is essential to also mention the type of trigger(s) in the respective content format.

What is a TW on TikTok?

Do I use TW or CW?

When last week’s Building Bridges Leadership email arrived in your inbox and you wondered what the “CW” meant in the preview text, you aren’t alone. Or you may have noticed a growing number of articles and social media posts using “CW” or “TW” at the beginning, followed by a brief phrase describing trauma of some kind, and still been left confused.

“CW” is shorthand for “Content Warning.” Similarly, “TW” is shorthand for “Trigger Warning.” Both are increasing in use in emails, articles, and social media posts as a way to indicate that what follows may be disturbing to some readers. Content Warnings usually indicate broader topics of concern, while Trigger Warnings indicate issues of personal trauma.

The CW or TW is followed by a brief description which allows the reader to decide if this is something they are prepared to read at this point. In last week’s case, I wrote “CW: Mass racial violence.” Depending on the reader’s life experiences, past trauma, and/or emotional state at the moment of seeing that email, they might: a) choose to read it; b) save it for a time they feel more able to engage; or c) decide that this is something they’d be better off not reading at all.

• When used appropriately, Content Warnings and Trigger Warnings like this give freedom to the reader to decide what’s right for them and at a time that works for them.
• They contribute to building a safer space for the reader.
• So why not use them all the time? A study published in Clinical Psychological Science suggests that in many cases Trigger Warnings do not help, and could even be harmful, but the situations included in the study are academic classes where the participants were given the warning but without the option to then disengage,

So the warning acted as a more of a self-fulfilling prognosis than a point of choice. When the piece is optional for the reader, having a Content/Trigger Warning can, in fact, help someone avoid a panic attack from unexpectedly revisiting past trauma.

If you communicate with groups in speaking or writing engagements: Invite feedback from others with different life experiences before ‘going live.’ Consider that their perspective may allow them to notice things in your blind spots, and incorporate their feedback if they point to anything potentially problematic. Consider treating your use of (professional and personal) social media channels the same way. Take a look at a list of suggested CW/TW labels for guidance. If the communication isn’t ‘optional’: In a speaking engagement, refrain from sharing anything that would warrant a Content/Trigger Warning wherever possible. Content/Trigger Warnings are only helpful if given ahead of time for people to opt-out ahead of time; giving the warning during the event doesn’t give a reasonable option to opt-out. Where it is not possible to avoid sharing, ensure that you give full context to allow people to emotionally track with what you’re sharing. Take time to acknowledge the gravity of what you’re sharing, and show that you take it seriously. If you have a personal experience related to what you’re sharing, acknowledge that. Recognize that intent and impact are not the same thing. Own your impact. You may share something with the best of intentions, but if it is hurtful to others, take responsibility for that. Apologize, and learn from it.

In DBT we strictly enforce the rules about saying things that can be triggers, sometimes those who don’t have BPD don’t realize how harmful what they say can be, sometimes people try to stir up some drama and some are so disconnected from their trauma they don’t understand how someone could be hurt by what they are saying.” The Challenges of Using TW: We’ve all come across that tweet that made us feel a sudden flood of anxiety or disbelief.

We wish we had never read it, as we now feel emotionally affected by it. Wouldn’t it be nice if there were a code for warning others that our post may be upsetting so that they have the choice to read on or pass it over if they are feeling particularly vulnerable? There is.

Forgetting to use the label when in the heat of Emotion Mind Being willful and deciding that it’s not important to extend this courtesy in a community setting Not caring about how your words might affect others The fact that triggers are very subjective. You may tweet something about how you are angry with your mother, not thinking this is a triggering tweet, but someone else who is going through something with their Mom may find it very triggering. It’s just impossible to be aware of and sensitive to every possible trigger that any person may be vulnerable to at a given moment in time, nor should you be burdened with that responsibility or have your freedom of expression squandered due to this. What we can do is come up with and agree on certain topics that should always be treated with caution and be preceded with a TW. Here are my suggestions:

Tweets or posts about:

suicide self harm specifics about abuse (mental, physical, sexual, etc.) glorification or support for eating disorder (ed) behaviors

What to do if you consistently see posts/tweets without TW that trigger you: Many people on Twitter and Facebook, like us, have mental illness and go through periods of suffering. They may sometimes post things on the above list without a TW. If it becomes too much for me, I unfollow them (usually not permanently — I just take a break.

• I’ve recently been particularly sensitive and vulnerable due to strong PTSD symptoms).
• I also let the person know why I’ve unfollowed.
• It’s a matter of self-care.
• It’s nothing personal or done to hurt or upset anyone else.
• Sometimes I just step away from social media for a while to soothe and then return later.

It’s up to you how you handle these situations. We can’t control anyone else’s behavior. I tend to be a Mother Hen, and with the best of intentions try to nudge people into considering using TW, but this is not always well received. I have to accept that.

• Nothing anyone does is about us.
• It is about them, and each person as at their own point on their particular journey.
• We can’t force people to understand or compromise.
• It’s up to them to decide how they will behave in a community setting.

Some common triggers are evocation and/or images of sexual violence, physical violence, violence on kids, war scenes, domestic violence, eating disorders, etc.

Of course, one doesn’t know every traumatic experience that exists, and some people might have had trauma with uncommon things. So no – you cannot always guess, and yes – you might sometimes miss something. That happens.

What does TW stand for on Reddit?

It means ‘ trigger warning.’ In that context, it means that the text included fat shaming, so it acts as a warning for people who would be offended by reading about fat shaming.

When should I put a TW?

This, my lovelies, is a pre-release copy of a book. ARCs are typically given to reviewers and booksellers before publication to generate conversation surrounding the book.

An author that you love so damn much that they you will buy a book written by them without even checking to see what the book is about. They are just that good. Short for The Book Depository. Also known as Book Depo or TBD. This book selling website is well known in the online book community because it offers free shipping internationally.

A hashtag often used by book reviewers for trading ARCs of books, because of the legalities around not selling these book copies and passing such copies onto other reviewers. The slumpy, thoughful, overwhelmed feeling that you get after finishing an AMAZING, RAVE-WORTHY, BROKE YOUR HEART sort of book.

1. You can’t start another book right away.
2. You need time to process and survive all the feels.
3. Also known as a readalong.
4. A buddy read is when you read the book at the same time as one, or several, of your bookish friends so you can rant, rave, cry, scream and cherish the story together.
5. Short for currently reading.

Often seen in the taglines for Twitter or Discord, this is a short and quick way to share what books we are currently delving into. CW stands for content warning. Sick of GR? Check out TSG! (See TSG below). When a book gives a lot of technical detail, including multiple characters, background, technology or world-building all at once. This is a term that refers to a romance that occurs with little/no buildup. For many readers, this isn’t a desirable trope. We want to feel the chemistry.

This is a movement for supporting YA fiction written by Australian authors. Sadly, the large majority of bestselling YA books are from the US. So here are the locals supporting locals. Check out their website or the hashtag on Twitter, (See YA below). OTP = One True Pairing.

A term used to express our deep emotions about certain fictional relationships. And they don’t have to be a relationship that ACTUALLY occurs. Because we love authors but sometimes readers think they know better. Coined by Corinne Duyvis in late 2015, #ownvoices refers to diverse books written by authors of the same diverse group.

My TBR is quite often littered with dark magical beings, tentacles, furry bunnies, and wonderfully diverse characters,

Short for TheStoryGraph. This is a brand spanking new site for book tracking and stats that is FAR SUPERIOR to GRs. Don’t know what I am talking about? Check out this post, (See GR above).
