How did KL get its name?
Pre-independence era (1857–1957) – The junction of the Gombak and Klang rivers. Early Kuala Lumpur developed to the east (right in the image). Kuala Lumpur was founded ca.1857 at the confluence of the Gombak and Klang rivers. In English, the name Kuala Lumpur literally means “muddy confluence”.
- The venture into the muddy confluence started when a member of the Selangor royal family hired tin prospectors to open tin mines in the Klang Valley,
- The Journal of the Malayan Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society states that Raja Abdullah (who was involved in the Klang War ) founded Kuala Lumpur, aside from also opening up tin-mines up river and had introduced the Chinese into the region.
A total of 87 Chinese prospectors went up the river Klang and began prospecting in the Ampang area, which was then jungle. Despite 69 of them dying due to the pestilential conditions, a thriving tin mine was established. This naturally attracted merchants who traded basic provisions to the miners in exchange for some of the tin.
Two traders from Lukut, Hiu Siew and Yap Ah Sze, then arrived in Kuala Lumpur where they set up shops to sell provisions to the miners. Kuala Lumpur was the furthest point up the Klang River to which supplies could conveniently be brought by boat; it therefore became a collection and dispersal point serving the tin mines.
The town, spurred on by tin-mining, started to develop beside the confluence of the Gombak and Klang rivers with the Old Market Square ( Medan Pasar ) its commercial centre. The Chinese mainly settled around the Market Square; the Malays, later also Indian Chettiars and Indian Muslims, resided further north in areas such as Kampung Rawa with Java Street (now Jalan Tun Perak ) the boundary between the Chinese and Malay areas.

What is the true meaning of Ki?
Practicing classical Japanese karate in a safe and collegial setting. Ki (or chi in Chinese) is a Japanese word meaning spirit or energy. It is a complex and somewhat elusive concept that will vary greatly depending on one’s person belief system or faith.
“Life creates it, makes it grow. Its energy surrounds us and binds us. Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter. You must feel the Force around you; here, between you, me, the tree, the rock, everywhere, yes even between the land and the ship.”
According to Wikipedia (I know, not an academically sound source, but bear with me) there are three kinds of ki :
- Tai-ki : energy drawn from the atmosphere
- Chi-ki : energy drawn from the ground
- Nai-ki : energy that resides within the body
Some believe that a person’s ki can be so great that it can go beyond the body into a target thus devastating or healing that target without even touching it. This is demonstrated in many movies and video games. Kanazawa Sensei (2012) writes of “sending positive ki ” to those who need it – a similar sentiment to praying for someone.
- We can’t measure ki (yet) but we can feel it.
- We can feel it in an inspired athletic or artistic performance, in a kata, kumite, or when it feels like all the stars are aligned in our favour.
- Positive psychologists refer to being in a state of “flow”; athletes describe “being in the zone”.
- When you experience ki you will know it.
“Life creates it, makes it grow. Its energy surrounds us and binds us.” ~Yoda Kime means focus (of energy). Energy can be random, unpredictable, loose, and wild (parents of small children know this). But it can also be graceful, fluid, and controlled. Kime is the precise point at which all of one’s physical, mental, and spiritual energies converge on one spot for one instant.
- This is similar to concentrating all of the sun’s rays through a magnifying glass on one spot to burn something.
- The instance of kime is often accompanied by a kiai,
- Ai refers to uniting or concentrating.
- Iai, then, means concentrating one’s spirit (or energy) to the point where it can no longer be contained in the body.
Think of ki as a sphere of energy housed in the hara (abdomen) or a little monster that is tumbling around in there and in the instance of kime (focused energy) the little monster escapes in the form of a loud shout. This shout, however, is not a vocal one initiated in the lungs or vocal cords; it is a sound emanating from deep down in the body, caused by the contraction of the diaphragm and the abdominal muscles.
A true kiai is spontaneous and real. It can be experienced it in kata and kumite when one is at one with one’s movements – without realizing it, one will express a loud shout in harmony with one’s technique and think to oneself “where did that come from?” For beginners any old shout is OK. Children are even coached to actually say ” KIAI ” when they strike.
Advanced karateka should seek the deeper meaning and source of this energy. This is not to say that there is always great, spiritual meaning to ki, There could be, but that is up to the participant. Those seeking to find some spiritual meaning in training and find it are fortunate.
What does woke mean in urban slang?
Then–United States Congresswoman Marcia Fudge holding a T-shirt reading “Stay Woke: Vote” in 2018 Woke is an adjective derived from African-American Vernacular English (AAVE) meaning “alert to racial prejudice and discrimination “. Beginning in the 2010s, it came to encompass a broader awareness of social inequalities such as sexism and LGBT rights,
Woke has also been used as shorthand for some ideas of the American Left involving identity politics and social justice, such as white privilege and slavery reparations for African Americans, The phrase stay woke has been present in AAVE since the 1930s. In some contexts, it referred to an awareness of social and political issues affecting African Americans,
The phrase was uttered in recordings from the mid-20th century by Lead Belly and, post-millennium, by Erykah Badu, The term woke gained further popularity in the 2010s. Over time, it became increasingly connected to matters beyond race such as gender and other marginalized identities.
- During the 2014 Ferguson protests, the phrase was popularized by Black Lives Matter (BLM) activists seeking to raise awareness about police shootings of African Americans.
- After the term was used on Black Twitter, woke was increasingly used by white people, who often used it to signal their support for BLM; some commentators criticized this usage as cultural appropriation,
The term became popular with millennials and members of Generation Z, As its use spread internationally, woke was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2017. By 2020, many on the political right and some in the center in several Western countries began sarcastically using the term as a pejorative for various leftist and progressive movements and ideologies.
