Is WPL successful?

What WPL’s success means for sportswomen, society and consumerism The Women’s Premier League (WPL) has found a place in the history books. The enthusiasm, stamina and athleticism of players, the reception from viewers and sponsors, and the momentum it gave for women’s participation in sports are tremendous. Wpl Points Table 2023 PREMIUM Alyssa Healy of UP Warriorz plays a shot during match eight of the Women’s Premier League between the the Royal Challengers Bangalore and the UP Warriorz held at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai, March 10, 2023 (SPORTZPICS) The inaugural edition of the WPL player auction saw 87 players getting sold, and the five franchises — Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Giants, UP Warriors and Royal Challengers Bangalore – spending ₹ 59.5 crore collectively in the auction.

Reports say the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) raised a total of ₹ 4,669.99 crore by selling WPL franchise rights for five years. The individual franchise values range from ₹ 757 crore to ₹ 1,289 crore. Dedicated Fan Base: What Does It Mean For Society? The fact that the franchises had a dedicated fan base has given the tournament and the players an even greater exposure than the country games.

These franchises, which also own the men’s teams, were tweeting and sharing glimpses of the games through their handles — needless to say, they already have millions of followers. That kind of a dedicated fan base is important, says Radha, who introduces herself as “obsessed with women’s sports” on Twitter.

  • The event was a big success, so much so that the BCCI is mulling the possibility of scheduling the next edition of WPL in the Diwali window.
  • The cricketing body acknowledged that the tournament had a dedicated audience base which will only keep growing in the coming years.
  • Women’s cricket in India started gaining attention as late as 2017 when the team finished second in the ICC World Cup.

But, five years on, the BCCI not only spoke about pay parity among players, but also introduced it. As a result, India became only the second country in world cricket after New Zealand to bring in pay parity. But, this was only the beginning. The WPL auctions saw some of the franchises’ strongest bids for players like Smriti Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues and Harmanpreet Kaur.

The event was also well-advertised, with giant posters of the players coming up at several prominent places in and around Mumbai. Reports said official attendance during the games breached 30,000, with average turnouts ranging from 9,000-13,000 for most games on weekdays, too. What could this mean from a broader perspective? While athletes like Karnam Malleshwari, Sania Mirza and Saina Nehwal have inspired girls to choose sports, the WPL has raised the bar.

The upliftment of women not only comes in terms of the sport but also whenever we have had women champions, they have played a key role in breaking the glass ceiling, former tennis player Manisha Malhotra said. The true power of women being successful in sports, Malhotra says, is that they bring an element of empathy no one else in sports can.

Sponsors Galore: What Does It Mean for Female Consumerism? Despite being a new property, the WPL franchises managed to attract strong interest from brands, particularly some women-centric ones and some newbies in sports sponsorship. “Some brands have also inked two-year sponsorship contracts. We believe that the Women’s Premier League will be a turning point in Indian cricket,” Dhiraj Malhotra, CEO of Delhi Capitals, was quoted as saying in one of the dailies.

Some of the key sponsors in the tournament were JSW Paints, Sportsbuzz11, Navyasa, Yatra.com, Joy Personal Care, Galaxy Basmati Rice, Kajaria Ceramics, Mia by Tanishq, Dream11, Vega Beauty, Himalayan Face Care, Puma, Lotus Herbals, Ashok Leyland, Dream11 and Sonata Software.

  1. In addition, the Tata Group — title sponsor — had also bagged the right chest spot on all team jerseys.
  2. This needs to be seen in relation to the consumption in the direct-to-consumer (D2C) space.
  3. A report by Instamojo, an all-in-one D2C tech platform, said women dominated the space in 2022 as they accounted for most of the sales of D2C brands in India.

This was not just consumption-related but also on the entrepreneurial side. Reports say the Indian D2C market size — estimated to be at $55 billion in 2022 — is forecast to hit $100 billion in a couple of years, with an expected CAGR of 34.5 per cent during the 2022-2027 period.

Record Viewership: What Does It Mean For Women in Sport? According to reports, the league’s broadcasting and streaming partner Viacom18 claimed that the tournament’s inaugural season had delivered the highest viewership on any women’s event globally. It referred to WPL’s digital footprint through Viacom18’s streaming app JioCinema, which clocked the highest watch time — more than 50 minutes per match per user.

This could have trickled down to the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) matches. “I think we are heading in the right direction. The big change that I had wanted to happen — equal opportunities — has already begun with the WPL, that too in grand style,” the God of cricket, Sachin Tendulkar, was quoted as saying recently.

  • For now, it looks like a promising start.
  • However, how this could alter the sporting industry in the future and inspire generations of young girls to take up the sport and carve a niche for themselves needs to be seen.

Can RCB can qualify for WPL?

As we head to the business end of the WPL, let’s look at how RCB and UPW are fighting for a spot in the eliminator and what is in store for GG? – Wpl Points Table 2023 How can RCB, UPW and GG qualify for playoffs? (Photo: WPL) UP Warriorz spiced up the race to the Women’s Premier League (WPL) playoffs as they ended Mumbai Indians’ winning streak. Adding more drama in the qualification scenario, Royal Challengers Bangalore all-rounder Sophie Devine’s 99 put Gujarat Giants on the brink of elimination.

As we head to the business end of the first-ever WPL, let’s look at how RCB and UPW are fighting for a spot in the eliminator and what is in store for GG? Mumbai Indians became the first team to qualify for the playoffs by winning their first five matches. MI’s defeat against UPW followed by RCB’s win over GG helped Delhi Capitals to secure their playoff berth.

But the battle for the top spot finish, which will lead to direct qualification to the finl, is still on between MI and DC. ROAD TO ELIMINATOR Out of UPW, RCB and GG, only one team can join MI and DC in the playoffs. As of March 19, UPW are third in the standings with six points and two games in hand, whereas RCB (4th) and GG (5th) have four points each.

  1. If UPW win one of their two matches (against GG and DC), they will knock out both RCB and GG.
  2. But if they lose both of their matches then it will open the door for RCB and GG, who both have only one match in hand.
  3. If both RCB and GG win their final league matches (RCB vs MI and GG vs UPW), then whoever will have the better net run rate will qualify for the eliminator.

DIRECT ROUTE TO FINAL DC (8 points) and MI (10 points) are fighting for direct entry to the final. Both teams have two games each in hand. If MI win both of their matches (against DC and RCB), they will progress to the final. But if they lose one of the two matches, they may still end up in the eliminator provided DC win their next two matches (against MI and UPW) but with a massive margin to further boost their net run rate.

How many foreigners can play in WPL?

  • However, the real intrigue came when DC announced their starting lineup, which included five overseas players.
  • This is notable because RCB, as well as Gujarat Giants (GG), Mumbai Indians (MI), and UP Warriorz (UW), are permitted to play only four foreign players in their XI.
  • DC, on the other hand, have received an exemption to the rule and have taken advantage of it by naming five of their six overseas players in the starting XI.

What is the reason for this special allowance? The Capitals are granted this special allowance because one of their foreign players in the lineup is classified as an associate player. DC has included Tara Norris, a player from the United States of America (USA), an associate nation, in their team.

  1. The WPL’s playing regulations allow teams to have up to five foreign players in the lineup only if one of them is an associate player.
  2. Besides the Meg Lanning-led team, none of the other franchises have bought a player from an associate nation in the auction.
  3. In summary, the stage is set for an exciting match between RCB and DC in the WPL, where the latter team has been allowed an additional foreign player in their lineup due to the inclusion of an associate player from the USA.

Teams: Delhi Capitals Women (Playing XI): Shafali Verma, Meg Lanning(c), Marizanne Kapp, Jemimah Rodrigues, Alice Capsey, Jess Jonassen, Taniya Bhatia(w), Arundhati Reddy, Shikha Pandey, Radha Yadav, Tara Norris Royal Challengers Bangalore Women (Playing XI): Smriti Mandhana(c), Sophie Devine, Heather Knight, Disha Kasat, Ellyse Perry, Richa Ghosh(w), Kanika Ahuja, Asha Shobana, Preeti Bose, Megan Schutt, Renuka Thakur Singh

How many overseas players are allowed in WPL cricket?

Delhi Capitals took the field with five overseas players in the playing XI during the side’s opening match of the WPL against Royal Challengers Bangalore. – After a blistering start to the Women’s Premier League on Saturday night that saw Mumbai Indians thrashing Gujarat Giants by 143 runs, the action moved to Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai where Smriti Mandhana ‘s Royal Challengers Bangalore took on the Delhi Capitals. Smriti Mandhana (L) with Meg Lanning(WPL) Like the Indian Premier League, there has been a four-overseas player limit in place in the WPL as well; however, in the latter, it also has a twist. In the rules for the women’s league, the BCCI has allowed a fifth overseas slot if the concerned cricketer is from an associate nation.

In the auction earlier this year, Delhi Capitals were the only side that added an associate player to their roster, signing Tara Norris of the United States of America. Also read: ‘I don’t like the kind of.’: Smriti Mandhana’s brilliant statement to shut down comparison talks with Kohli at RCB Norris is part of the XI in Delhi Capitals’ opener against RCB, thus taking the fifth overseas slot in the XI.

The other four overseas players include captain Lanning, Marizanne Kapp, Alice Capsey, and Jess Jonassen. Bangalore, meanwhile, boast of a fiery overseas lineup in their playing XI, taking the field in the opener with Sophie Devine, Heather Knight, Ellyse Perry and Megan Schutt.

Earlier in the first game of the WPL, Harmanpreet Kaur unleashed havoc on the Giants bowlers as she smashed a brilliant 65 off just 30 deliveries, while Hayley Matthews (47) and Amelia Kerr (45*) also made important contributions to take MI to a mammoth score of 207/5 in 20 overs. The Giants, in the run-chase, endured a disappointing batting collapse as they were bundled on 64, with their captain Beth Mooney being retired hurt early in the innings.

In Mooney’s absence, Sneh Rana was the stand-in captain for the Giants and the Indian all-rounder is expected to lead the side in their second match of the tournament later on Sunday against UP Warriorz.

How many matches will each team play in WPL?

WPL FAQs – Everything you need to know about the Women’s Premier League Everything you need to know about the inaugural Women’s Premier League After a long wait, the (WPL) is finally kicking off. Here is everything you need to know about India’s new T20 franchise league for women.

  1. Right, so finally we have the Women’s IPL! Wait, or is it called something else? It’s called the Women’s Premier League or just WPL.
  2. Cool, WPL.
  3. So when does it start and where? It starts on March 4 at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai,,
  4. Before you ask, there are five teams, 22 matches in all, including the final on March 26 at the Brabourne Stadium at the other end of the city.

So all matches are in Mumbai? What’s the format? Yes, all in Mumbai. Technically, Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, which also comes under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. All the games will be played at just the two grounds mentioned above. The five teams will play each other twice in the round-robin stage.

That makes it eight games per team and 20 league games. Then, the team that finishes on top cruises straight into the final and watches the teams placed second and third battle it out in an eliminator that decides the second finalist. What time are the matches? Most matches will start at 7.30pm IST, except on double-header days, when the first match will begin at 3.30pm, like in the IPL.

The WPL has four such double-headers. Interesting. Who owns these teams again? Three owners of IPL teams also bought teams here – Reliance got Mumbai Indians, the JSW and GMR group got Delhi Capitals, and Diageo bought Royal Challengers Bangalore. There are two new owners – Adani Sportsline bought Ahmedabad-based Gujarat Giants and Capri Global, a non-banking financial services company, took the Lucknow-based UP franchise, UP Warriorz (yes, that’s with a Z, not S). Is there the usual rule of four overseas players per XI, like in the IPL? That’s right. Except that if a team has an Associate player – she could be played as the fifth overseas player in the XI. Capitals were the only team to by an Associate player at the auction:, a left-arm quick, from USA.

  • What do the five squads look like? As per the rules, each squad has 15 to 18 members, with six overseas players each.
  • In full detail, along with their strengths and weaknesses.
  • Why aren’t these teams all playing at their home grounds then? The BCCI secretary Jay Shah said on the day of the players auction that the tournament may expand to more cities later on, but for now it’s all in Mumbai for logistical reasons – the fact that the tournament has been planned in a short period of time, only in the last few months.

So what happens if more than two teams finish on the same number of points for any of the top three places? Take out your calculator. Once the points are tied, the team with the most wins in the league stage will be placed higher. If the wins are also the same, the team with the higher net run rate will be placed higher.

If the NRR is also equal, the team with the higher number of wickets taken per legal balls bowled in matches with results will be considered higher. Hopefully we won’t get that far. What happens if a match, say the final, is tied? You can throw that calculator out, we’re not counting boundaries. If the scores are level in any game, then a Super Over will be played.

If the Super Over is also tied, subsequent Super Overs shall be played until there is a winner. If it’s not possible to play or complete the Super Over, the match will be tied and both teams will be awarded one point each. If the Super Over is not possible in the eliminator or the final, then the team which finished higher on the table after the round-robin stage will be declared winner.

  1. And what if there’s a rain-curtailed match, given all games are being played in and around Mumbai? Fair enough.
  2. Let’s also take climate change into account because it doesn’t (usually) rain in March in Mumbai.
  3. If it does, both teams need to bat a minimum of five overs to get a result, and the usual DLS rules apply.

Will the DRS be available? Yes. Each team will be allowed a maximum of two unsuccessful reviews per innings. UltraEdge and HawkEye technologies will be available to the third umpire for edge detection and ball-tracking. And we have the usual rules around concussion replacements and third umpires keeping tabs on bowlers overstepping? Yes, it’s all business as usual.

How many will qualify for WPL playoffs?

On Tuesday, Mumbai Indians became the first team to be assured of a place in the playoffs. With five wins out of five, they cannot finish outside the top three. Although, given how they are playing, the top spot and a direct place in the final will be the main aim for Harmanpreet Kaur and Co.

Top three teams in the final standings will qualify for playoffsTeam finishing first in the league table will directly play in the finalTeams finishing second and third will play an Eliminator and the winner will qualify for final

Points table after MI vs GG: Delhi Capitals are one win away from joing Mumbai Indians in the top three. Even assuming UPW lose against RCB, they will still be in a good position to make it to the top three. They will face MI, DC and GG in remaining matches. They have a good NRR too and if it comes to a tie on six points, they will be in a good position. Wpl Points Table 2023 RCB have started with five defeats and their best-case scenario is six points from here on. When they take on UPW on Wednesday at the DY Patil Stadium, they will know a defeat will end their tournament. If UPW go to six points, RCB’s best-case becomes four points and it is official elimination.

  1. So, first things first, RCB must beat UPW on Wednesday.
  2. Then, as they did perhaps on Tuesday, RCB must root for MI and DC in their remaining matches (except against themselves of course).
  3. For RCB, who have a negative two NRR, Warriorz must remain where they are on four points so Alyssa Healy and Co shouldn’t win another match for the rest of the tournament.

A critical match for RCB is UPW vs Gujarat Giants on 17 March, assuming they are alive till then. Mandhana and Co will have to root for a Giants win in that one to keep Warriorz on four points. The only scenario where a NRR equation could favour RCB is a six-point tie with Giants, who are worse off than the Bangalore side.

Which team is eliminated from WPL 2023?

WPL 2023: Mithali Raj Comes Out In Support Of Gujarat Giants After Elimination Mumbai: Losing key players at the start of the Women’s Premier League disturbed Gujarat Giants’ team composition and “shuffling the deck wasn’t easy”, team mentor Mithali Raj and head coach Rachel Haynes said after the side’s elimination.

  1. Having suffered a calf injury on the opening day of the inaugural tournament, Australia opener and designated captain Beth Mooney missed the remainder of the WPL, dealing a big blow to her side’s prospects.
  2. Even as the others stepped up, Gujarat Giants did miss a player of Mooney’s calibre.
  3. Throughout.

“Honestly, we did put up a good team, but the results were not in our favour and the season didn’t go our way. We lost key players early on, and it dented our composition. But despite this hiccup, the team stepped up and showed their grit and passion to win,” Mithali said in a press release issued by the Adani-owned franchise.

Gujarat Giants were eliminated after losing their last match against UP Warriorz on Monday. Talking about her debut stint as a head coach, Haynes said, “This was certainly, an exciting and enriching experience for me as head coach for such a wonderful team. “Undoubtedly, we had our tough moments, but the team put up a riveting performance and showed a lot of character during every match.

We all are taking with us many positives and pivotal life-lessons from this inaugural session.” After posting a challenging total against UPW, the Giants were done in by Grace Harris’s 41-ball 72, who propelled her team into the playoffs. Haynes added, “As we take a step back and take a moment to pause and reflect at the season, it does hurt to lose out on key players before the end of the first game, and shuffling the deck in terms of playing combinations was not an easy decision, but this allowed every player to showcase their potential and we are happy about it.” (This report has been published as part of the auto-generated syndicate wire feed.

Is WPL 2023 successful?

MI skipper Harmanpreet Kaur opened up on the success of the WPL and asserted that the followers of the game were more interested in women’s matches than men’s – One of the biggest highlights of Indian cricket in 2023 was the inception of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) which saw Harmanpreet Kaur-led Mumbai Indians winning the inaugural title.

What is the highest speed in WPL?

Why WPL’s Claim That Ellyse Perry Smashed The Fastest Ball Record In Women’s Cricket Is Almost Certainly Nonsense Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have claimed that legendary Australian all-rounder bowled the fastest delivery in women’s cricket history in the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League – here’s why that’s almost certainly not true.

  1. RCB have had a rough start to their WPL campaign, with their first five matches ending in losses.
  2. Their sixth game though, provided some relief to the RCB fans,
  3. Apart from the victory, there was another significant event that caught the eye of the public in general and the RCB fans in particular.
  4. Perry was bowling her third over, the 16th of the UP Warriorz innings.

She had bowled brilliantly up until that point, conceding just eight runs in 16 deliveries and picking two wickets. The fifth ball of the over was another well-directed back-of-length delivery which Sophie Ecclestone pulled to mid-wicket for two runs.

  • The speed gun clocked it at 130.5 kph (81 mph),
  • Very recently broke the record for the fastest ball ever bowled in women’s cricket.
  • She had clocked 128 kph (80 mph) against England in the semifinal of the Women’s T20 World Cup, which was held just before the WPL.
  • There was widespread adulation for her feat.

It is not normal for bowling speeds to touch 80 mph in women’s cricket. It didn’t take much time for the RCB social media team to put up a post congratulating Perry on her achievement. Fastest delivery in the history of women’s cricket. Who else but the 🐐? 💁‍♀️ Pez lives life in the fast lane! 💨 — Royal Challengers Bangalore (@RCBTweets) The WPL site also showed Perry’s ball as the fastest ball of the tournament.

Totally agree. Even the official website of the league is claiming it. Crazy. — Pranaav (@Pranaav_512) How likely is it though, that a mark which had not been breached since speed data has been used in women’s cricket until a month ago, has now been broken by two veteran fast bowlers who are well into the second half of their careers? Perry has been regarded as one of the finest and fittest athletes in the women’s game for a long time now.

But she has never reportedly come close to the 130 kph mark before. In the where Ismail breached the 80 mph barrier, Perry’s fastest ball was recorded at 126.2 kph, which translates to 78.4 mph. It may well be one of her fastest ever, but it’s not as if she has been consistently hitting that mark either.

Here are all the speeds shown for Perry on the TV speed gun during WBBL|08, the Australia v Pakistan series, T20 World Cup and the WPL.Make up your own mind whether that reading was reliable. — hypocaust (@_hypocaust)

The obvious conclusion to draw from this is that the speed gun was not at its most accurate on the night of the game where she supposedly broke the record. Perhaps the broadcasters recognised that too after the Perry delivery, as bowling speeds were not shown on the screen throughout the rest of the match.

  • There have been numerous such incidents in the past where the speed gun has malfunctioned, leading to rather comical scenes and reactions.
  • Sri Lanka’s Matheesha Pathirana was shown to have bowled a 175 kph thunderbolt in the 2020 U19 World Cup against India while,
  • The speeds shown in these cases were so extreme that it was evident from the word go that they were the result of a faulty speed gun.

Perry’s ‘fastest ball’ being clocked at a not-so-extreme 130 kph has made it much more believable. While the fastest ball graphic can no longer be seen on the WPL site, RCB haven’t taken down their post which claims Perry to have bowled the fastest delivery in women’s cricket.

We had a good time, relaxed for a few days. We are up against Mumbai tonight. Spin has played a big role here. The bowlers have been effective througout the tournament. Minnu Mani comes in for Poonam Yadav,” Delhi Capitals skipper Meg Lanning said after winning the toss. “We were looking to bowl first, so the toss is not going to affect us.

I think the wicket will swing, it looks hard. We need to stay positive, the last game was important and we got a lot of confidence after that. They have a good batting line-up, we need to bowl well tonight. We are going with the same XI,” Mumbai Indians skipper Harmanpreet Kaur said after the toss.

Can MI still qualify for playoffs 2023?

IPL 2023 Playoffs Qualification Scenario: How RR, MI & RCB Can Qualify For IPL 16 Playoffs IPL 2023 Playoffs Qualification scenario: Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) defeated two-time IPL winners Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in a low-scoring thriller by just one run on Sunday (May 20) to become the third team to qualify for Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 Playoffs.

  • LSG have now played all their league stage games and with 17 points from 14 matches, are in third position in IPL 2023 Points Table.
  • While a thrilling win assured Lucknow of a spot in IPL 2023 Playoffs, a defeat for Kolkata put curtains on their IPL 2023 campaign.
  • Batting first, LSG were reeling at 73/5 when Nicholas Pooran’s 30-ball 58 propelled them to a competitive 176/8.

Luck favoured LSG and their ‘Impact Player’ Yash Thakur as they survived a Rinku Singh (67 not out off 33) scare, successfully defending 21 runs in the last over. ALSO READ | Now, with just two games remaining in IPL 2023 league stage, one final spot is up for grabs for three teams: Rajasthan Royals, Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Rajasthan Royals (14 points) have played all their league stage matches, Mumbai Indians (MI) are slated to lock horns with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on May 21, while Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) play Gujarat Titans (GT). Here’s how RR, MI and RCB can still qualify for IPL 2023 playoffs. Among all three teams, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have the strongest chance to make it to IPL 2023 Playoffs.

RCB, at present, is on fourth position in IPL 2023 Points Table ahead of Mumbai Indians (MI) and Rajasthan Royals (RR). If Virat Kohli-starrer Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) beat defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) by a respectable margin, they will qualify for IPL 2023 Playoffs even if Mumbai Indians (MI) win their match against SRH.

If Mumbai lose against Hyderabad, just a simple win will ensure RCB’s qualification. Five-time IPL winners Mumbai Indians ‘ (MI) Net Run Rate of -0.128 is lesser than Royal Challengers Bangalore and Rajasthan Royals. MI, at present, is on 6th spot in IPL 2023 Points Table with 14 points. For Mumbai Indians to qualify for IPL 2023 Playoffs, they need to defeat Sunrisers Hyderabad by a significant margin.

If MI beat SRH, they will have 16 points and better Net Run Rate than Royal Challengers Bangalore. However, if Bangalore lose against Gujarat, a win will be enough for MI to confirm a berth in IPL 2023 Playoffs. Rajasthan Royals have played all their matches in league stage.

For RR to qualify for Playoffs, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Mumbai Indians (MI) must lose their respective matches. Also, RR will have better qualification chances if GT defeat RR by a significant margin, so that RCB’s NRR goes down below RR’s NRR. Is there KKR in WPL?

Will KKR buy a Women’s Premier League team in future? – Wpl Points Table 2023 Trinbago Knight Riders v Jamaica Tallawahs – 2019 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) (Image: Getty) Kolkata Knight Riders fans would naturally be disappointed after seeing the franchise absent from the Women’s Premier League. However, there is a possibility that Shah Rukh Khan and Mehta Group could enter the WPL in the future.

  1. There is no franchise from Kolkata in the women’s league right now, meaning that if the BCCI expands the tournament in the future, KKR team owners can join in by buying the franchise.
  2. The 2023 Women’s Premier League is expected to start in March 2023.
  3. It will be interesting to see how the five teams perform in the new tournament for women’s cricket.

Can GT qualify for playoffs 2023?

Gujarat Titans on Monday became the first team to officially qualify for the IPL 2023 playoffs, and their 34-run win vs SRH also meant that the 2016 champions became the second team after the Delhi Capitals to be knocked out of the playoffs race. That leaves 3 spots vacant now, with 7 teams still mathematically in the running, though CSK and MI are the frontrunners to take two of the three remaining playoffs berths.

  1. Of the 7 teams still in the race, MI, LSG, RCB and PBKS have 2 matches left to play, while CSK, RR and KKR have one league game left to play.
  2. IPL POINTS TABLE | SCHEDULE & RESULTS With 8 matches left to play in the league stage of IPL 2023, there are now 256 possible combinations of results.
  3. TOI looks at each of these possibilities to calculate the chances of individual teams making it to the playoffs.

As things stand, one team is sure of finishing first or second, another is almost certain to make the play-offs, a third one is a strong favourite to do so and a fourth team has a nearly two-thirds chance. Among the others, DC and SRH are now definitely out of the play-offs race but the others are still mathematically in the running.

  1. TOI’s Shankar Raghuraman does the number crunching to determine how the teams stand as of Tuesday, May 16 morning, in 10 points: 1.
  2. GT, after Monday’s win, are guaranteed to finish in top spot in terms of points either singly or jointly.
  3. Their chances of being sole leader have improved to 87.5%.
  4. But even if they tie for top spot, it can only be with one other team, so they are sure of finishing the league stage as No.1 or 2 2.

CSK can no longer grab top spot or even tie for it, but they are also almost certain of making it to the top four on points with their chances of finishing in that bracket either singly or jointly now at 94.9% (Photo: @tata_neu Twitter) 3. MI are in third place, and their chances of making the top four on points are now at 89%, though that includes scenarios where they’re tied for the fourth spot. They are the only team that can tie with GT for top spot 4. In fourth spot currently, LSG can also no longer aspire for top spot, but have a 65.2% chance of making the top four.

Once again that includes scenarios in which they are only joint fourth, some of them with multiple teams 5. RCB are in fifth place and their chances of finishing in the top four remain at 43.8% though this includes situations of teams tied on points for the last spot. They can no longer aspire to top the league stage 6.

Currently in sixth place, RR’s chances of making the top four remain at 18.8%. They can do not better than tied fourth, and that’s if they win their remaining game and other results fall in place 7. KKR, now in seventh place, can also not finish better than tied fourth with between one and five other teams.

  1. But their chances of achieving that are better than RR’s at 21.1% 8.
  2. PK are in eighth place, but an extra game in hand means their chances of finishing in the top four on points are better, at 43.8%, than RR or KKR, which are above them in the table 9.
  3. Ninth placed SRH are now officially out of the play-offs, like DC, with their best possible placing being sixth 10.

DC’s shot at the play-offs is also now officially over. They became the first team to get eliminated following Saturday’s loss to PK (AI image) How we calculate these probabilities: We looked at all 256 possible combinations of results with 8 matches remaining. We assumed that for any given match the chances of either side winning are even. We then looked at how many of the combinations put each team in one of the top four slots by points.
