PUNE: Savitribai Phule Pune University ( SPPU ) has declared that the combined passing method will be valid for ongoing semester examinations. Students can pass a subject by getting passing marks calculated as a combination of practical, theory, and internal marks in the subject as opposed to passing individually in all three components.
The university has clarified that a student needs to be present in all three exams or components otherwise he/she will be declared failed even if the combined marks in the subject are above the passing marks. Combined passing has been decided only for the academic year 2021-22 as a special matter in the backdrop of Covid 19.
Results of this year’s exam will be based on oral, practical, internal, and written examinations, taking them together and not separately. However, the university has clarified that if the student is absent from any of the applicable exams, this decision will not apply to such students.

PUNE: Getting pass-marks in the Savitribai Phule Pune University ( SPPU ) term-end examination will not be a cakewalk for students. The examination department has made it clear that just like the regular examinations, minimum passing marks are essential even in the online/offline examinations. There were media reports recently that Nagpur University has devised a plan where 50% of the internal marks will be calculated along with 50% of the theory examination marks to arrive at the final score. This means if you score high marks in the internal section, and just the remaining marks in the theory exam, the student can pass in the subject.
- However, Mahesh Kakade, director of Board of Examination and Evaluation at SPPU said the students need to score passing marks in the theory examinations which will be out of 50 marks, and these would be normalised to out of 100 marks in the result.
- There would be no change in the passing rules, he added.
“We want the students to take these examinations seriously. Only the total marks have been cut to 50 and the duration has been shrunk to one hour. All the ordinances related to passing in these examinations remain more or less the same,” Kakade said. For example, if the total marks in a theory examination used to be 100 or 70 earlier, have been brought down to 50.
- Whatever marks a student gets out of 50 will be converted to the equivalent marks out of 100 or 70, as the case may be.
- The student needs to get minimum passing marks, which is about 40%, to pass in this theory examination, whether he appears online or offline.
- The same applies to internal marks and practicals.
The rules of passing have not changed and students must keep that in mind, Kakade said. Due to the pandemic, the university is allowing students to choose between appearing for an online or offline examination. An option form has been uploaded on the university website where students can log in and register their choice of mode of examination.

But it requires huge space for storing the recorded video data and if all things go well, then it will be used for first time in this semester exams,” said Mahesh Kakade, head, SPPU examination and evaluation department. “As we chose the online format for exams after the pandemic struck, there was less time to prepare question sets and we kept it relatively easy to crack.
Now, with two years of conducting online exams with multiple-choice questions (MCQ) method, we will increase the difficulty level of paper sets for the forthcoming exams,” said Kakade. “There are faculty, deans, paper setters, moderators and other people involved in this process. This time it would be the same MCQ method examinations with 50 marks and a total of 60 questions.
The timing would be of one hour and for disabled students it would be 20 minutes extra. The questions will be more difficult for this semester’s exam and students should be prepared for it,” he said. Around 6.15 lakh students from various streams will appear for the exams from more than 350 affiliated colleges to SPPU from Pune, Nashik and Ahmednagar district.
- With 284 courses in post-graduate and undergraduate, there are 6,862 subjects.
- For 1,600 subjects there are two mediums of appearing for the exams with English and Marathi.
- The university examination department had used proctored method to conduct exams online.
- Through this proctored method students can appear for exams using smartphones, tablet, laptop or desktop computers and even from internet cyber cafes.
In this method when a student login to give the exam through a smartphone, laptop or tablet, all the minute movements of students are captured and monitored by the system. Student found cheating would be given three warnings, and would be disqualified for committing the error again.
