But on February 7, the general manager of Eastern Railway and Metro Railway, Arun Arora, said if the Esplanade-Sealdah stretch was not ready by the end of 2023, trains would run between Howrah Maidan and Esplanade.

  • If such a truncated service started, Metro passengers from Howrah Maidan travelling to a destination beyond Sealdah would have the option of travelling from Esplanade to Sealdah by surface transport arranged by Metro and board a train towards Sector V from Sealdah, Arora had suggested.

Problem zone The 2.5-km stretch between Esplanade and Sealdah, more specifically an 800m stretch in Bowbazar, continues to be a daunting challenge for engineers despite a “significant breakthrough” earlier this month. The construction of a ventilation shaft at Raja Subodh Mullick Square has been on hold for months because the soil condition has not reached satisfactory levels despite continuous grouting, said officials.

The condition of the soil has cast a cloud on the construction of the fifth. The makers have decided to do away with the remaining three passages. “Three cross passages towards Sealdah have been dispensed with. Instead, we will build a passenger emergency exit system in Durga Pituri Lane where the retrieval shaft is being sealed,” Jaiswal said.

  1. Trial runs Once the retrieval shaft is closed, rakes can be brought from Sealdah for trial runs, which are expected to start in April.
  2. The trains will be brought through the Sector V-bound tunnel, which is largely ready.
  3. Tracks are missing at some places and some support structures need to be removed before a train can use it to reach Esplanade, said KMRC engineers.

“We will place temporary tracks. Some support structures have to be removed. That work will be taken up after March 20,” said Jaiswal. “We want to start trial runs between Howrah Maidan and Esplanade in April. All the systems installed there need to be tried, tested and certified.

  2. The construction was stalled since an accident on May 11 last year — the second of the three since 2019 — led to water seepage and cracks in houses in the neighbourhood.

But as of 2011, after state government dis-invested from the project, most of the share of this project went to Indian Railways and with Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC). The project is estimated at a cost of ₹ 50 billion (US$630 million). While by 2019, the cost escalated to ₹ 80 billion (equivalent to ₹ 99 billion or US$1.2 billion in 2023).

But due to major setbacks, such as land acquisition, slum relocation, and route alignment problems, the project got delayed. The East-West Corridor was originally slated to be operational by 2012, but was later pushed back to 2015. The project will now be implemented in four phases.

KOLKATA: The state government has renamed nine Metro stations in the New Town stretch of the Garia Station-Airport route. While stations in the stretch along the EM Bypass had been named after various personalities, including Satyajit Ray (SRFTI), Ritwik Ghatak (Kalikapur) and Hemanta Mukherjee (Ruby), names that have now been suggested for the latter section of the line denote an area or a landmark. While the metro projects in Kolkata are developed by Railways that names the station after the site or the locality to help identify them so that the project contracts can then be issued on specified segments between the stations, the state government has the prerogative to rename them.

  • Sources said a proposed name requires to be vetted by the home ministry only if it is after a personality.
  • None of the nine stations that have been renamed in New Town are after any personality.
  • The East-West Metro lines, developed by special purpose vehicle Kolkata Metro Railway Corporation (KMRC) before being handed over to Railways for operation also has the stations named after locations.

The stations between Rabindra Sarobar and Noapara and its extension to both Dakshineswar and Kolkata airport are named after locations or landmarks. A senior Hidco offiical said the state had already conveyed its decision to Metro Rail and RVNL. “We had earlier received the proposal of renaming the upcoming metro stations in New Town, which has been approved,” said a senior transport department official.

Citing the reason for renaming stations, a Hidco officials said New Town had developed since Railways had given the provisional names at the time of finalizing the project several years ago and that locations where stations are situated are now popularly known by landmarks like Nazrul Tirtha or Biswa Bangla Convention Centre that have since sprung up.

Some time ago, Hidco authorities had received a formal petition from a section of residents, who had pointing to the mismatch between names given to stations and where they were actually located. For instance, the station near first rotary in New Town is named Bidhannagar while it is well past neighbouring township Salt Lake.

Kolkata: Metro Railway’s non-fare revenue has jumped a record 91% this fiscal against the year-ago period, earning it the fifth rank in the non-fare income category among zonal railways across the country. “Metro has earned Rs 29.5 crore during April 1, 2022 to February 28, 2023, from the non-fare segment.

  • In 2021-22, Metro earned Rs 15.5 crore as non-fare revenue (NFR) till February.
  • This is a 90.5% increase.
  • With only 40 stations in its flap, Metro Railway has ranked fifth among all zonal railways in cumulative NFR earnings,” said Metro Railway CPRO Kaushik Mitra,
  • In 2021-22, Metro earned Rs 19.5 crore, which was a whopping 71% higher than the previous financial year.

“The huge earnings vis-à-vis NFR is significant because we have had to make up for the losses during the pandemic and the post-pandemic condition,” said an official. The carrier has been generating revenues through advertisements inside and outside Metro rakes, displaying hoardings in open spaces and installing health check-up kiosks at stations.

Who built Kolkata Metro?

Planning – The then Chief Minister of West Bengal, Bidhan Chandra Roy, reconceived the idea of an underground railway for Kolkata from 1949 to 1950. A survey was done by a team of French experts, but nothing concrete came of this. Efforts to solve problem traffic by augmenting the existing fleet of public transport vehicles hardly helped, since roads accounted for only 4.2 percent of the surface area in Kolkata, compared with 25 percent in Delhi and 30 percent in other cities.

To find alternative solutions, the Metropolitan Transport Project (MTP) was set up in 1969. The MTP, with the help of Soviet specialists, Lenmetroproekt and East German engineers, prepared a master plan to provide five rapid-transit (metro) lines for the city of Kolkata, totaling a length of 97.5 km (60.6 mi), in 1971.

Three were selected for construction. These were:

  1. Dum Dum – Tollygunge (Line 1. Presently operates from Dakshineswar to New Garia )
  2. Bidhannagar – Ramrajatala (Line 2. Presently truncated till Howrah Maidan )
  3. Dakshineswar – Thakurpukur (Divided into Line 1; Noapara to Dakshineswar and Line 3; Joka to Esplanade )

The highest priority was given to the busy north–south corridor between Dum Dum and Tollygunge over a length of 16.45 km (10.22 mi); work on this project was approved on 1 June 1972. A tentative deadline was fixed to complete all the corridors by 1991.
