SA20 Twenty20 South African cricket league has confirmed exciting additions to its playing format for the inaugural season that began on Tuesday (January 10).The six teams will play 33 matches in total, including three playoff matches that consist of two semi-finals and the final. Also read: The additions have been included to improve the quality of the product while preserving the sanctity of the game.

In an innovative move to level the playing field, each captain can nominate 13 players to take the field before the toss. After the toss, each captain can select their final starting XI and the remainder of the players will automatically become substitute players.

Teams will be encouraged to put in dominant performances, with the winning team awarded four points and a bonus-point win generating five points. The bonus point will be awarded to a team who achieves a run rate of 1.25 times that of the opposition. In case of a no result, both teams will be awarded two points, while the losing team will not receive any points.

In addition, the following rules have been announced for SA20:

The pace of play will be protected without suspensions with captains charged with in-game penalties for slow over-rates through fielding restrictions. There has been an amendment to the free-hit rule, a bowled dismissal can’t lead to byes if the ball ricochets off the stumps. Positive and attacking fielding will be encouraged. No runs can be taken off an intentional attempt to run out the batter if a direct hit deflects off the stumps. There will be two strategic time-outs of 2 minutes 30 seconds in duration in each innings. The time-outs are to allow the teams to re-group tactically. Six Powerplay overs will be implemented where only two fielders will be allowed outside the 30-yard circle.

In the event of teams finishing on equal points, the right to progress through to the final and those to play in the play-off will be determined as follows:

The team with the most number of wins; If still equal, the team with the highest number of bonus points; If still equal, the team with the highest net run rate; If still equal, the team with the most number of wins over the other team(s) who are equal on points and have the same number of wins; If still equal, the team with the highest runs to wickets ratio throughout the tournament; If still equal, the team with the highest wickets to runs ratio throughout the tournament. In a match declared as a No Result, run rate is not applicable.

The first semi-final will include the team finishing top of the group stages against the team finishing fourth. The second semi-final will be between the teams finishing second and third respectively. The winners of the two semi-finals will contest the final.

How many teams will qualify in SA 20?

So what’s different about it? – Actually, there is one big thing. Captains will be allowed to name 13 players before the toss and whittle that down to the final XI after the toss. That means they can make tactical team choices once they know whether they’ll be batting or bowling first.

  1. But other than that, even without the T, it’s still a T20 tournament and it takes pretty much the same shape as another one you may have heard of.
  2. There are six teams in total and they will play a round-robin phase, with each team playing the other home and away, followed by semi-finals and a final.
  3. There was a pre-tournament auction and each team is allowed a squad of 18 players, the bulk of whom are South African.

On match days, they will be allowed to field four foreign players in each XI.

Why there is gap between SA20 matches?

CSA looks to postpone New Zealand tour as T20 leagues continue to cause strain on bilateral commitments The two-Test series, which will begin on February 4 in Tauranga, will currently clash with the latter stages of the SA20 The increasing encroachment of T20 leagues on the international calendar could force South Africa to seek a postponement or field a second-string side on next year’s tour to New Zealand.

The two-Test series, which will begin on February 4 in Tauranga, will clash with the latter stages of the SA20, South Africa’s T20 franchise competition, and will present Cricket South Africa (CSA) with a conundrum over player availability. A significant proportion of South Africa’s Test players, including captain Temba Bavuma, new Durban Super Giants captain Keshav Maharaj and the entire frontline pace pack – Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi and Marco Jansen – are contracted to teams in the SA20 and will either have to miss parts of the tournament or opt out of the Tests, with the latter more likely.

Although South Africa’s players are contractually bound to both CSA and the SA20, CSA has guaranteed the SA20 first rights to the players over the January window and as such, the players will be obliged to play for their franchises rather than the national team.

  1. It is, therefore, almost certain that South Africa will have to send a makeshift Test side to New Zealand.
  2. CSA’s CEO Pholetsi Moseki told ESPNcricinfo that the organisation will have a better idea of which players are available for the Tests, “after the SA20 mini-auction in September,” and that they are still trying to have the New Zealand Tests moved.

The 2023-2027 FTP, which was made public in last year, had South Africa scheduled to play two Tests in New Zealand in February 2024. NZC announced the fixtures this week which confirmed matches from February 4 to 17. Given the distance and time difference, CSA plans to send their Test squad to New Zealand about a week in advance, which will be around January 28 but would have preferred to send them at least a week later, at the conclusion of the SA20.

  • The SA20 will begin in the week of January 7, after India’s tour to South Africa, and should end around February 4.
  • Ideally, CSA would have wanted the New Zealand Tests to be held from mid-February, but NZC was unable to accede to that because they are also due to host Australia, whose players need to be free by late March for the IPL.

The three T20I and two-Test series against Australia runs from February 21 to March 12, while the IPL is understood to be pencilled in for after March 20 at the earliest. South Africa forfeited the three ODIs against Australia earlier this year to play in the SA20 instead • SA20 CSA has also asked NZC to consider hosting the Tests during the IPL, in April, which would impact player availability for both sides, but this request could not be accommodated.

  1. Both CSA and NZC have players contracted to the IPL, though in South Africa’s case it is far fewer than those who will be involved at the SA20.
  2. CSA maintains that they are still trying to find an alternative window to propose to NZC but “if you look at the FTP – there’s nowhere to move the matches because we need to complete the WTC cycle by 2025,” Moseki said.

Asked if South Africa, who only play two-Test series for the entire 2023-2025 WTC cycle, would consider forfeiting the matches, Moseki said they “want to avoid cancelling matches because we are aware of our bilateral obligations,” but also admitted “the SA20 is too important,” to jeopardise.

  • The SA20 turned a profit in its first year and CSA is hedging the game’s financial future on the event which is why they have reneged on an international before.
  • South Africa three ODIs against Australia earlier this year in order to launch the SA20 with all their players available and as such, put themselves in a tough position on the World Cup Super League table.

Despite making that concession, the first season of the SA20 still faced scheduling difficulties. A World Cup Super League series against England had to be sandwiched into the tournament window and it had to move out of the Cape Town, Paarl and Port Elizabeth in order for those venues to ready themselves for the Women’s T20 World Cup.

  • As a result, the SA20 started off in the Western and Eastern Cape before fixtures were held up-country and on the east coast, and took an eight-day break after 22 matches to accommodate for the England ODIs.
  • The organisers were hoping for a smoother schedule this time around but, because of the clash with the New Zealand series, will have to wait until 2025 for that.

Moseki said CSA has ensured there are no future issues in the SA20 window for the remainder of the ongoing FTP. However, South Africa are due to host Pakistan for two Tests, three ODIs and three T20Is deep into January in 2025, West Indies for five T20Is in January 2026 and England for three Tests, three ODIs and three T20Is in early 2027.

Is SA20 a success?

SA20 teams given R39.1 million salary purse to build their squads The second season to have an extra game; each team to also sign a rookier player, aged 22 or under, who has never played in SA20 before The second season of the SA20 will see one additional match – a mirror of the IPL’s knockout phase – and a salary purse increase of R5.1 million (USD 276,000 approx) – per team.

  • That takes the total number of fixtures to 34, with each side playing the other five teams both home and away before the knockout stage.
  • Instead of two semi-finals and a final, as was the case in the inaugural edition, the SA20 will have two qualifiers and an eliminator before the final.
  • Each of the six teams can contract an additional player, bringing the total squad size to 19.

The additional player must be a South African rookie, who is 22 or younger and has not played in the SA20 previously. These changes have been made after what league commissioner told ESPNcricinfo was a debut season that “exceeded expectations across the board,” and with a view to growing the league “in a way that benefits South African cricket.” Smith envisages a “mini-auction” towards the end of September 2023 and no major changes to the franchises, most of whom contracted local players on two-year deals.

  • The position around that was that we wanted the fan base to get to know their teams,” Smith said.
  • And that was one of the major successes we had in season one – how fast fans got behind their teams.
  • But with teams also getting to know South African cricket, you want a bit of space to manoeuvre and so we expect some South African players will move between franchises.” To accommodate that, an official trading window for South African players opened on June 1.

Teams can pre-sign, trade, buy-out or retain players until the end of July when the SA20 will have a full audit of the squads and plan for the auction. There is a mixture of one and two-year deals for international players contracted to the SA20 and there is also expected to be some movement in that area, albeit likely before the auction. The inaugural SA20 was a roaring success • SA 20 With some player movement likely, teams will need to dip into the extra salary allowance, which has gone up from R34 million (USD 1.84 million approx) last season to R39.1 million (USD 2.1 million approx) for the edition.

  • The organisers feel the extra incentive will allow squads to “attract the best talent” and help assemble “powerhouse squads”.
  • Smith foresees another big auction ahead of the third season.
  • In total, each of the six teams is required to have a minimum of 11 South African players in their squads.
  • On match day, the teams can field a maximum of four overseas players and a minimum of seven local players.

The inaugural SA20 season was a roaring success in South Africa, which saw Sunrisers Eastern Cape crowned as champions. The second season will be played in the same January window in 2024 and could also see some changes to the playing conditions. After the SA20 became the first league to allow teams to name 13 players at the toss and whittle that down to 11 afterwards, it is now mulling whether to keep that or explore an IPL-style Impact Player Rule instead.

Is SA20 a copy of IPL?

EXPLAINED: Here’s Why SA20 League Is Called Mini IPL The first-ever player auction for the SA20, which is Cricket South Africa’s franchise T20 league, took place on Monday in Cape Town with young 22-old batter Tristan Stubbs cashing the biggest payday – Rand 9.2 million (USD 520,000 approx.) by Sunrisers Eastern Cape.

There were other big signings made at the auction table on Monday for the SA20. The inaugural edition of the league is slated to be played in January 2023. Six teams will compete in the first edition of the SA20. Interestingly, all the 6 teams are bought by IPL owners! Yes, and that is the reason why the fans are labelling SA20 as Mini-IPL.

Six of the 10 franchises in the IPL now have teams in South Africa’s biggest T20 league, which has made this tournament all the more attractive for broadcasters as the involvement of IPL owners, and connection with a number of players of the teams, will fetch many Indian viewers to watch SA20. How many people watch SA20 in India?

Big TV audience for inaugural SA20 The success of the inaugural SA20 is supported by ticket sales and broadcast numbers. Six of the 33 matches were sold out – including the final at the Wanderers – with 74% of tickets sold across all matches. In South Africa, the tournament was the most watched sporting event on average on SuperSport Premium during the period, with a cumulative viewership of 8.96 million.

Female viewers made up 46% of that audience. The SA20 was broadcast to seven different territories through SuperSport in Sub-Saharan Africa, Viacom 18 in India, Sky Sports in the UK, Fox Sports in Australasia, Etisalat in the UAE, and to the rest of the world via ICC TV.India reported five billion viewing time minutes, 131 million people reached and 104 million digital video views.

“The success of the inaugural edition of the SA20 was a team effort,” said league commissioner Graeme Smith. ” I’d like to thank the franchises, commercial partners and broadcasters for their partnership and belief in our vision, the players for entertaining us, and the public for their support to fill up the stadiums and create renewed interest in South African cricket.

Is SA20 popular?

SA20 is turning out to be a massive success: Graeme Smith – Adgully.com Following the tremendous success of the Indian Premier League (IPL) over the years, T-20 cricket leagues are being formed in different cricketing nations, or where the game is very popular.

  1. One such league is SA20, the Twenty20 franchise cricket tournament in South Africa, organised by Cricket South Africa.
  2. The inaugural edition of the SA20 has been an enthralling experience for fans not only in South Africa, but across the globe.
  3. The popularity of the league with its carnival styled theme has not only provided entertainment to fans, but also provided brands and advertisers a new engaging channel to enter into.

Graeme Smith, League Commissioner of the SA20, is set on making the league the biggest and most vibrant cricket tournament after the IPL. With heavy investments from India-based companies, there has been a positive response from brands and broadcasters across the globe, with credit going to the IPL based franchises which have bought the available teams in the SA20 league.

  • In conversation with Adgully, Graeme Smith speaks about the main purpose of the league, brand and advertiser response to the tournament, the cricketing scenario in South Africa, and more.
  • How would you assess the performance of the league so far? The BCCI has expressed some concern over how the teams are treating the tournament as an extension of the IPL, with similar logos and jerseys.

SA20 is turning out to be a massive success. We’ve obviously got a long way to go before finishing the tournament strong. But I think the cricket has been outstanding. We’ve been blessed with some really great young individual performances here in South Africa – from both South African and international players.

So far there has been an amazing energy from our fans in South Africa at all the stadiums around the country. To be able to capture their imagination, after what has been quite a negative period in the game in South Africa, has been incredible. We are in a close relationship with the BCCI and are in consistent communications with them, and nothing of the sorts has been raised with us regarding the issues that you mentioned.

How do you see the SA20 League giving South African cricket a lift over the long run? I think everyone focuses on the commercial aspect, which is crucial. You can’t pull off something at this level unless you have got really great partners and the financial capability.

One of the objectives was to deliver a commercially sustainable league to cricket in South Africa. I think it’s well documented that the performances of the national team and the general negativity surrounding the game – such as some player being in the headlines for the wrong reasons, the politics and sort of distress at the admin level have taken their toll on the fans.

I think there certainly has been a fatigue or negativity towards cricket in South Africa. When we started SA20, one of our objectives was to revive the fans and bring some energy back into the game. And I think we’ve certainly seen that in the first two weeks of the tournament.

The support that we have received has been incredible – be it a Monday night or a Tuesday night, the stadiums have been full. We are hoping that this energy that people in South Africa have got for SA20 will rub off on cricket in South Africa and support for team Proteas. You have previously spoken about respecting BCCI’s decision on Indian players.

But retired players have been part of overseas Leagues. So, do you see someone like an MS Dhoni being part of the League when he’s done with CSK? It will be amazing to have a player like MSD, as I said, we always work with and respect the BCCI’s decisions.

And I think that the fact that we’ve created a really good working relationship with them is great. They are hugely experienced in doing these types of events such as the IPL, the World Cup, etc. And I think it’s a very important relationship to have for SA20. From our perspective, one thing that we really wanted to build was a vibrant, young, up and coming, really competitive cricket League.

So, someone like an MSD would certainly add a lot of value to our league, he has been able to perform and maintain performance for a very long time and is extremely professional and will up the level of the league. SA20 is very new and hence, there is a lot of excitement over it.

But a few years down the line, how do you maintain the interest of the fans and bring in a consistent crowd for the League? It wasn’t long ago that everyone was telling me you wouldn’t fill Season 1. But we have been able to create some energy. The goal is to get South African players to a level where we can attract the best international talent.

People want to watch superstars play in great teams. Our goal is to always challenge ourselves to make sure that we can get better and better and to make sure that the tournament stays a success for many years to come. : SA20 is turning out to be a massive success: Graeme Smith – Adgully.com

Is SA20 hit or flop?

‘Cricket has got the energy back’ – Smith on SA20 success SA20 Sa 20 Points Table The SA20 has been successful in its maiden season. © SA20 Graeme Smith, the commissioner of SA20, says there has been an Indian cricket touchpoint to South African cricket for many years and explains why the league chose six IPL franchises, declaring he has no problem in it being called a mini-IPL.

He was categorical that the window for the league won’t change so that the FTP can be protected but hinted that the league’s wild card policy may not be there next year. Excerpts from an interview. Why has SA20 been so successful despite cricket in South Africa struggling in so many other ways? Very good question.

Probably quite a difficult one to pinpoint. I think it is because of a collective number of aspects. One of the objectives of SA20 is to put something successful and relate to the South African fans. There were a lot of negativities in South Africa for a long time.

We spent a lot of time speaking about how we could change that, how could we change the narrative, how to re-energise cricket in South Africa and how we could bring the fans back.? A lot of these decisions we made around marketing, ticketing, pricing, by speaking to the public. That was our main goal.

Once it picked pace, we had strategies around it. I think the fan experience has been great. The quality of cricket, which is our co-product, is good. New South African talent is being spoken about. Once the ball got rolling, the energy was created. Are you confident it will rub into South African cricket? I hope so.

It has been amazing how many people have approached me saying they watched the first ODI against England and we beat them like that for the first time in years now. Cricket has got the energy back which is what we wanted to do. Obviously, we want the Proteas men and women to be successful. Our goal here is to benefit players and strengthen players who can perform for South Africa at the international stage as well.

We know it won’t happen overnight. The general impression of the SA20 is that it is an extension of the IPL. We don’t see that as a negative. I don’t have a problem with that. We have been fortunate to attract the type of teams we wanted. We got six of the most experienced franchises in the world who got huge experience in building the teams over their last 15-16 years.

The fact that they wanted to build their global brand through SA20 is a positive. It has benefited everyone across the board. These are global brands, and fans around the world, in India and South African, recognise these brands. There has been an Indian cricket touchpoint to South African cricket for many years.

The other factor which has been amazing is how fast the local fans have got behind their teams. It is city-based and the fans being in the stadium from PE to Durban to Cape Town and emotionally involved was something we thought would take a lot of time.

But it was incredibly instant. Was it difficult to find a few South African investors? We did not have a plan to have six IPL owners. We wanted to attract quality people, we spoke to around 30 people, 30 companies and 30 entities. We then handed over Deloitte to do the due diligence. The six teams that we see today were considered the best.

In the end it was a no brainer. But how do you explain the business model? There is a perception that there would be losses of about $5-6 million for each franchise every year. I think it is a journey and they understand that. We know what we would like to deliver for them.

They did not make money in the IPL in Year One either. Eventually they will as our business model is very strong. Also, they are very strong business operators within themselves. I am very comfortable with where we are now. The opinion of the local business and sponsorship market has changed and there is energy towards the league.

That is what we intended to do. Are you comfortable with the clash of your windows with other leagues? Is the window likely to change in future so that more quality international players can take part? Players from both the leagues are earning. It is a good time for the players.

It is a good one if you are a top player. Look, in a perfect world, you would not like to clash with anybody. Unfortunately, that is not the reality. We have an FTP, we have a Boxing Day Test, we have a New Year Test. So, this will remain our window. You have seen turmoil in South Africa cricket due to Kolpak.

You are seeing players preferring early retirement or shunning national cricket contracts, Trent Boult for instance. In such a backdrop, how do you explain your policy of Wild Card? The franchises may be willing to shell out $ 5 million for top cricketers, who could be tempted to leave national teams.

I am not sure the Wild Card would be there for us every year. We still don’t know the policy for next year. We have not drafted our player regulation for the second season. The South African domestic season was not played (before the SA20 auction), the World Cup was not played yet. So, there were a few factors which we thought would give opportunities for new young players.

The only internationals we had signed through Wild Card were Dhananjaya de Silva and Jofra Archer. You are bringing up a bigger issue of world cricket. But you are not just a South African administrator, are you? You are an administrator of world cricket too.

You owe responsibility to world Cricket as well. We do. Our reasons for Wild Card were cricket related. We wanted to give opportunities to new cricket heroes. The IPL auction had not happened when we had finished. We did not know who would be picked. So, there were a whole lot of factors for this. Our challenge for us now is to have our player regulation right from second year.

How could you have allowed Temba Bavuma to be unsold? He is your national captain, like you were once. Could you not have avoided that embarrassment? We needed to be careful here. Our job in the league is not to interfere in certain things. Selection is up to the teams.

Obviously, we would have loved to see Temba picked up. We are glad that he has performed well and he is playing now (for Sunrisers Eastern Cape). He has shown everybody with his performances and he has got the reward. To step in or not to step in – we had to draw a line. Integrity of the league has got to be No.1 for us.

Finally, why is India so important for South African cricket? For a number of reasons. The fan base, love for cricket, eyeballs that come with India and the commercials. The fact that so many businesses and television channels (the league is being shown in Sports 18 and Jio Cinema) love cricket in India, it is the backbone, like you might say Europe is the backbone of football.

Is SA20 profitable?

Long-term security – In addition, the SA20 league is locked down for the next decade, as each of the six founding teams committed themselves to a 10-year deal. The January/February time-slot is attractive, the tournament is short, the quality of the cricket is high and the pedigree of the wide array of international players on view is impressive. (Photo: Grant Pitcher/Gallo Images) Cricket South Africa (CSA) will gain massive economic benefits from a tournament that takes little more than a month.

  1. The governing body has played a small role in its success, but it’s been Smith and former England Cricket Board CEO Tom Harrison (who starts as Six Nations CEO next month), who have driven it.
  2. Smith has obviously had to do a lot of learning on the job.
  3. Fortunately, the IPL clubs that bought into the league have provided expertise on how to run a competition of this nature and mentors such as Harrison have been perfect sounding boards.

Visit Daily Maverick’s home page for more news, analysis and investigations From a CSA perspective, the success of the tournament lightens the financial burden and helps with player retention. The SA20 provides huge wages to a large group of South African players, easing the pressure on provincial unions, which almost all exist purely on funding from CSA.

It’s not a silver bullet that will take away all financial stress, but it’s a massive tonic for the ailing industry. “We needed to diversify our income stream and the SA20 is an important part of that,” CSA chief executive Pholetsi Moseki told Daily Maverick, “We gave the SA20 league five years to break even, but it’s already done that and more in year one.” About 60 South African players are earning great wages for little more than a month’s work.

Hard-hitting Tristan Stubbs was the highest seller at auction, for R9.2-million, and Donovan Ferreira, who was in semi-retirement a year ago, was picked up by the Joburg Super Kings for R5.5-million. Fast bowler Sisanda Magala was signed for R5.4-million by the Gqeberha outfit Sunrisers Eastern Cape.

His performances have been superb, meaning he will be sought after in SA20 II’s auction later this year. Even Proteas white-ball captain Temba Bavuma, who was snubbed at the inaugural auction, was picked up for the latter part of the campaign by the Sunrisers. “I’ve played in all the T20 leagues around the world and I’m very happy to say that the SA20 is right up there behind the IPL,” Joburg Super Kings skipper Faf du Plessis told Daily Maverick,

“This tournament has surprised a lot of people, but if you look at the pedigree of the players, with a great list of internationals participating, it means the standard of competition has been really high. “The IPL ownership has also had a hugely positive impact because it comes with a lot of know-how and professionalism in terms of running a big tournament like this.
