According to civic officials, while KMC and Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL), which is executing the Metro project, have identified 400m land that belongs to Command Hospital to divert the pipelines between Majerhat and Mominpore, it is in the remaining 1.1km stretch that land has emerged as a challenge.

According to a KMC sewerage and drainage department official, more than water supply, the sewerage department is in no position to divert the underground lines along this stretch. “We have discussed the issue with the Metro authorities and made it clear that we need alternative land for diverting the drainage lines.

Since there is a scarcity of land along this stretch, it is a serious hurdle,” a civic official said. There is a British-era brick sewage along this stretch. Recently, the KMC drainage department has laid new underground sewerage pipes in the Kidderpore-Ekbalpore-Mominpore belt to connect these neighbourhoods with the newly constructed drainage pumping station at Nawab Ali Park.

However, beyond that, land will have to be acquired from private owners to enable the infrastructure diversion. The Metro project was stalled since 2011 because of a stand-off between the railways and the defence ministry and construction could happen only between Joka and Majerhat, forcing RVNL to split the project in two phases.

A third phase – extension from Taratala to Majerhat – was included when the Majerhat bridge collapsed and the work for Majerhat station got stalled.

  • After the completion of tension clamp replacement work, each fastening was checked thoroughly.

The entire work on the UP and DOWN lines (46 km total) of the AEL was completed within just six months due to the tireless efforts of the engineering team from different concerned wings of DMRC,” said the statement. Since the Airport Express Line hosts thousands of national and international passengers every day, efforts were taken to ensure that the maintenance activities are carried out causing the least possible interference to Metro Operations on the line.
