Why is Jaipur Metro in loss?

JAIPUR: The Jaipur Metro, which was launched with great fanfare in June 2015, continues to be a white elephant even after nearly seven years as the Jaipur Metro Rail Corporation ( JMRC ) borne operational losses of approximately Rs 60 crore in financial year 2020-2021.

Recovering the project cost is at present a distant dream as it is struggling to become self-sustainable. The project that was planned to meet the urban transport demands of the city for the next many decades has miserably failed as due to faulty planning. The JMRC earned Rs 453.26 lakh from operations.

The 12th annual report reads, the commercial operations of Phase-1A of Jaipur Metro Rail Project, Mansarovar to Chandpole, have resulted in heavy operating losses mainly due very low ridership, fixed expenses on salary and allowances, administrative expenses, depreciation.

Net operational loss for 2020-21 is Rs 6,012.84 lakh,” A JMRC official said, “The Jaipur Metro in the financial year 2019-2020 faced an annual operational loss of approximately Rs 40 crore. This year, there was an additional Rs 20 crore losses as operations were shut for nearly four months due to Covid.” Sources further said, the metro is sustaining with the Rajasthan Transport Infrastructure Development Fund (RTIDF), which is collected after imposing tax on the public.

“A major share of the corporation revenue earning, Rs 10,500 lakh is (RTIDF). The RTIDF comprises green tax, 25% stamp duty surcharge. The department is neglected and till the time department focus on to boost the revenue, public money will continue to be wasted in non-profit entity,” said a source.

The extension of metro network is the slowest in the country in comparison to the other states. Officials believed the project could have become viable if extensions have happened at regular intervals and the city is linked with the Metro. “The Mansarovar to Baddi Chaupar has failed to achieve target ridership.

The average ridership of the corridor is 20,000. Though the state department has proposed to extend the corridor by 4.3 km at both ends, the project will not attract people as per the estimation. Instead, the government should have focused on 23 km phase I (B) project proposed between Sitapura to Ambabari,”

Is Jaipur Metro driverless?

Jaipur Metro goes ‘driverless’; ATO system launched Jaipur: The Jaipur Metro Rail Corporation (JMRC) has started operating the metro line between Chandpole and Mansarovar through ‘Automatic Train Operation’ (ATO) system from January 1. According to JMRC officials, there will be no need for motorman (driver) in the metro as the operation will take place automatically.

No human intervention will be involved. The driver will be there to regulate the automated doors in the metro and to check on emergencies. The trial to run the Automatic Train operation (ATO) system was conducted in Jaipur three months ago under the supervision of Sushil Chandra who is commissioner of railway safety at Mumbai western circle.

The speed of the metro will be controlled automatically as per situation. The automatic system will be less time-consuming. The travel time will be reduced by four minutes. The Jaipur metro department has come up with a new timetable under this automated system, which will be updated soon on the official website.

At present, the metro is being operated manually under the Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system by skilled drivers. The speed of the metro is decided under this system and if the metro crosses the designated speed limit, automatic breaks come into force. The metro will be operated under ATO from 8 am to 8 pm and under ATP between 6:20 am to 7:45 am and 8.10 pm to 9:30 am After the installation of ATO on Tuesday, metro will cover the distance from Chandpole to Mansarovar and vice versa in 21 minutes.
