How are ISL points calculated?

ISL Points Table 2022-23: Get ISL team rankings (updated) and standings The ISL points table visually represents the current state of the football clubs of the ongoing season. It considers the number of wins, losses, draws, and the ratio of goals scored and conceded by teams to rank them.

A total of 115 matches ( 110 league games and five playoff/knockout matches ) are played in a single ISL season. On Friday, March 3, 2023, Hyderabad FC defeated Kerala Blasters 1-0 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to qualify for the playoffs from the second position on the ISL points 2022-23 table. The Nizams sit after Mumbai City FC are followed by ATK Mohun Bagan FC in the third place.

Bengaluru FC, Kerala Blasters and Odisha FC occupy fourth, fifth and sixth places.

Standings Clubs Matches Played Wins Draws Losses Points
1 Mumbai City FC 20 14 4 2 46
2 Hyderabad FC 20 13 3 4 42
3 ATK Mohun Bagan FC 20 10 4 6 34
4 Bengaluru FC 20 11 1 8 34
5 Kerala Blasters 20 10 1 9 31
6 Odisha FC 20 9 3 8 30
7 FC Goa 20 8 3 9 27
8 Chennaiyin FC 20 7 6 7 27
9 SC East Bengal 20 6 1 13 19
10 Jamshedpur FC 20 5 4 11 19
11 NorthEast United FC 20 1 2 17 5

The primary aim of every team during the league stage is to finish within the top six positions of the points table, which in turn helps them to qualify for the ISL playoffs, The added incentive for finishing at the top of the points table in the league stage is the ISL League Winners Shield,

  1. A club is allotted 3 points for every win in the league stages.
  2. 1 point is given for a draw, which is shared by both the teams drawing the match.
  3. For a defeat, a club is allotted zero points

However, the points table is not this simple and the calculation gets complicated as the season progresses. With each team playing 20 matches during the league stage, the number of points earned by two or more teams overlaps numerous times. In such a scenario, the following criteria are used to determine the clubs’ positions.

  1. If two teams are tied on the same point, then the team with more points in head-to-head between the clubs get the higher position.
  2. If the head-to-head doesn’t separate the two teams, then the team with a superior goal difference in matches played between the two clubs is given priority.
  3. If the goal difference in their concerned matches cannot determine the position of the two teams, then the team with more goals moves to the higher position.
  4. In the unlikely scenario that the goals scored by the two teams fail to separate them, then their goal difference in the entire league is taken into consideration.
  5. The process continues with eventually the team with the highest fair play ranking is considered to stay above.
  6. The last resort is a draw.

Which is the strongest team in hero ISL?

Hero ISL 2022-23: Ranking all teams in terms of their efficiency in front of goal Hero Isl Points Table

Creativity and being clinical are hallmarks of a dominant goalscoring team. In the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) 2022-23, there are a select few teams who have been efficient at converting their chances and have required fewer chances to score one goal, making up for an efficient chance-to-goal conversion rate. However, there are other teams who haven’t been able to find the back of the net regularly despite creating several chances, falling prey to their lack of clinical edge in front of the goal. On that note, we rank the most efficient goalscoring Hero ISL sides in the 2022-23 campaign, based on the chances needed per goal scored:

11. Jamshedpur FC – 9.9 chances Having created 209 chances, third most in the league, the Men of Steel have lacked precision in front of goal, having scored 21 goals, ranking tenth across all teams this season. The Aidy Boothroyd-led side haven’t found rhythm when it comes to their goalscoring attributes.

Despite the flair of Rafael Crivellaro in the midfield and the link-up play of Daniel Chima Chukwu in the attacking third, the former Hero ISL League Shield winners have the lowest chance-to-goal conversion rate in the league at 10%.10. ATK Mohun Bagan – 9.3 chances It is indeed surprising to see the Hero ISL champions this low with respect to their efficiency in front of the goal.

While talisman Dimitri Petratos was firing across all cylinders for the Mariners with 12 goals and seven assists, the side were unable to conclude their chances with a goal output, leading to 28 goals across all 24 games, ranking eighth in the goalscoring charts.

With 260 chances this season, the Green and Maroons were second to only Mumbai City FC who created three more chances than them (263). Out of those 260 chances, they have only converted 10.8% of those opportunities. The over reliability on the duo of Dimitri Petratos and Hugo Boumous – who were at the forefront of chance creation as well as chance conversion (109 chances and 28 goal contributions combined) – led to inefficiency in front of the goal.9.

Kerala Blasters FC – 6.9 chances With 194 chances this season, one less than the previous one, there has not been much improvement in the chance creation aspect of the Blasters. Talisman Adrian Luna has continued to brew his creativity all over the pitch and remains the prime creator with 48 chances. Hero Isl Points Table =7. NorthEast United FC – 6.4 chances The Highlanders might not have scored plenty of goals this season but they certainly have made the most out of their chances creation. With 128 chances, the Guwahati-based side have managed to net 20 goals, thereby converting 15.6% of those opportunities.

While there might have been influence in the gameplay of the team after managerial changes midway through the season, the side have been able to convert with their limited chances, requiring just 6.4 chances to score one goal. =7. Bengaluru FC – 6.4 chances The Blues had a divided season in terms of chance creation and conversion.

The first-half of the season saw the side creating chances aplenty but were unable to convert it. After several tweaks by head coach Simon Grayson, the side became a cohesive unit and were thriving with goals with key playmaker and goalscorer Javi Hernandez at the helm.

Requiring 6.4 chances per goal, the Bengaluru-based side had a conversion rate of 15.7% which helped them give a massive boost in their run-up to the final involving a 10-game winning streak.6. Odisha FC – 6.3 chances Having scored 30 goals from 188 chances, the Juggernauts have not shied in front of the goal.

Golden Boot winner Diego Mauricio has been able to highly benefit from the chances created and has thrived on the interplay between Raynier Fernandes, Saul Crespo, Isaac Vanmalsawma, Victor Rodriguez, Nandakumar Sekar, and Jerry Mawihmingthanga. The Josep Gombau-led side converted 16% of their chances which has been a huge difference maker in their historic playoff finish this season in comparison to their 140 chances of last season.

  1. =4. Chennaiyin FC – 5.6 chances Under head coach Thomas Brdaric, Chennaiyin FC looked a completely different side, being able to breach opponents with their high tempo and attacking gameplay.
  2. The signings of Aakash Sangwan, Abdenasser El Khayati, Julius Duker, and Petar Sliskovic paid off as they were vital in creating chances for the side.

Having created 203 chances, the side were able to finish 17.7% of their chances. With 36 goals, the Marina Machans were the joint-second goalscoring team alongside Hyderabad FC and FC Goa. While they were able to find the back of the net regularly, the side’s recurring problems at the back posed a big obstacle in their pursuit of a playoff finish.

Who is the best defenders in ISL?

From Akash Mishra to Anwar Ali: Top defenders to watch out for in ISL 2023-24 Hero Isl Points Table “Attack wins you games; defence wins you titles” – this famous quote from Sir Alex Ferguson remains significant to this day, with the team having the best defence often clinching the coveted trophy they’re competing for. The Indian Super League (ISL) have been no exception.

The ISL has witnessed the rise of exceptional defensive talents. Statistics have consistently shown that having a rock-solid defence is pivotal for success in the league. This fact has been clearly illustrated by teams like Mumbai City FC, Mohun Bagan Super Giant, and Hyderabad FC, who have prioritized having a solid defensive unit and dominated the league in recent seasons.

While the ISL have seen several top foreign talents taking charge of defensive duties, Indian players haven’t lagged far behind when it comes to showcasing the art of defending. Names like Anwar Ali, Sandesh Jhingan, and Akash Mishra have become household names among Indian football enthusiasts. Hero Isl Points Table Mishra was the most consistent defender for Hyderabad FC over the last two ISL seasons. Whether it’s his positioning, off-the-ball movements, blocking crosses, or making timely tackles, Mishra checks all the boxes. His marauding runs down the left flank, coupled with his defensive solidity, make him one of the top left-backs in the league.

Mishra’s work rate and pinpoint crosses significantly contribute to his side’s attacking prowess. Now, with his move to Mumbai City FC, he will enjoy more freedom to venture forward, as the Islanders’ head coach, Des Buckingham, likes to harness the potential of his full-backs. The Indian international could form a potent partnership with Bipin Singh on the left flank, further enhancing their attacking threat down that side.

Fantasy potential: A full-back with such an expansive attacking skill set, Mishra could be the ideal addition to your team. Anwar Ali (Mohun Bagan Super Giant) Hero Isl Points Table The Indian international is renowned for his awareness, distribution, and positioning. He has also demonstrated his success in one-on-one situations. The 23-year-old has been in excellent form since his arrival at Mohun Bagan Super Giant, having already notched three goals for his team, and he has been a stalwart at the back during their Durand Cup triumph and in the AFC Cup qualifiers.

Fantasy potential: A goal-scoring defender who has now joined the team that kept the most clean sheets last season, Ali is a must-pick for your team. Mourtada Fall (Odisha FC) Hero Isl Points Table Having made 99 appearances in the ISL, Senegalese defender Fall is also approaching a significant milestone this season. The 6ft 3in towering defender will be reuniting with Sergio Lobera at Odisha FC and is set to play a big role for the Juggernauts in the upcoming season.

At 35, Fall has a wealth of experience under his belt, something he would like to share with other players on the team. His commanding presence and game-reading ability will greatly benefit Odisha FC on their new journey under Lobera. Boosted by his excellent heading accuracy, Fall is currently the highest-scoring defender in the league with 17 goals.

His timing and positioning when attacking crosses and corners have resulted in numerous goals for both FC Goa and Mumbai City FC, a trait he aims to continue at Odisha FC as well. Fantasy potential: With Odisha FC strengthening their defence, they can secure more clean sheets this season, and having a goal-scoring defender from that team is a clever move. Hero Isl Points Table Jhingan has been a pivotal figure for every club he has played for so far, and at his new club FC Goa, he is likely to continue that gold standard for defenders. Known for his commanding presence, exceptional aerial ability, and composed style of play, he could be an instrumental figure for Manolo Marquez’s side going into the tenth season of the ISL.

His leadership qualities and ability to read the game make him a true defensive stalwart and he is arguably the best Indian defender currently. Jhingan made 22 appearances in the ISL 2022-23 season for Bengaluru FC. Notably, he led the clearances chart last season with a remarkable 165 clearances, leaving the second-best, Odei Onaindia, who is now his teammate at FC Goa, far behind with 94 clearances.

Additionally, Jhingan dominated in aerial duels (118), which was more than double won by the second-best, Mourtada Fall (55). Fantasy potential: With Manolo Marquez earning plaudits for his sturdy defence, Sandesh Jhingan could be a solid pick for your fantasy team. Hero Isl Points Table The Montenegrin centre-back is destined for greatness. Damjanovic is proactive, and his physicality and athleticism make him a tough defender to beat. His impeccable reading of the game, combined with aerial prowess, makes him a force to reckon with. Few strikers found a way past this defensive stalwart last season as he stood tall for Mohun Bagan Super Giant during their ISL Cup triumph.

Damjanovic joined the Mariners halfway through last season and swiftly fit into their defence. In the ISL 2022-23 season, he made 22 tackles, 11 interceptions, 38 clearances, and 8 blocks. Now, having moved to Bengaluru FC for the upcoming season, the centre-back would be hoping to continue from where he left off last season.

Fantasy potential: Playing for the new defensive unit in the league, Damjanovic can rack up clean sheet points and occasional goal points. Aakash Sangwan (Chennaiyin FC) Hero Isl Points Table Sangwan has rapidly evolved into a highly versatile player during his time at Chennaiyin FC. The full-back is renowned for his dynamic playing style, which showcases a unique combination of defensive stability and attacking flair, making him a standout performer from the previous season.

  • If it wins at least one of its next matches or draws both games, it should be enough for KBFC to seal a spot in the playoffs.
  • Even if it draws one match and loses the other, a spot in the playoffs could be clinched for last year’s finalists.
  • If it loses both games, the results of FCG, BFC and OFC will decide the Blasters’ fate for a playoff spot.

Any team with 31 or more points will then compare with KBFC and in case of equal points (31), the head-to-head, followed by H2H goal difference will finalise the top six. one win and one draw in the remaining two matches. If Bengaluru beats FC Goa, it will qualify despite earning just three points. If BFC beats MCFC and loses to FC Goa, then its qualification will depend on the h2h records and the results of other teams to decide its spot in the top six.

  • Bengaluru FC (@bengalurufc) February 13, 2023 FC Goa (Next fixtures: CFC, BFC) If FC Goa wins both of its next games, it is assured of a playoff berth as Bengaluru FC can then reach only a maximum of 31.
  • If Goa and Odisha end up in the same point (equal number of draws from the next two games) the Gaurs will go through thanks to its better head-to-head records.

(refer to the ranking criteria) Odisha FC (Next fixtures: NEUFC, JFC) The Juggernauts will need two wins to confirm spot in the playoffs. This means Josep Gombau’s side will look for two wins in two games against the lowest-ranked teams in the league this season. Czech goalkeeper Jan Seda won the inaugural ISL Golden Glove award in 2014, as he kept six clean sheets for FC Goa in 14 appearances. Cameroonian Apoula Edel bagged the award in 2015, representing Chennaiyin FC and keeping six clean sheets in 13 matches.

  • Former Mumbai City FC goalkeeper Amrinder Singh became the first Indian to win the Golden Glove award in 2016 with five clean sheets in six matches.
  • Interestingly, he played 540 minutes in that edition – the bare minimum to be in contention for the award.
  • Since then, Indian goalies have won every edition of the Golden Glove award.

Much of it can be attributed towards ISL teams preferring Indian goalkeepers and keeping their overseas quota for outfield positions. Former India international Subrata Paul, representing Jamshedpur FC, walked away with the Golden Glove in the 2017-18 edition while Bengaluru FC ace Gurpreet Singh Sandhu clinched the award in 2018-19 and 2019-20, making him the only goalkeeper to have won the ISL Golden Glove twice. Which team is best in ISL fans?

Support – Fans at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium during an Indian Super League match Kerala Blasters are known in the ISL for their fanatical supporters. Averaging over 55,000 fans a game, the Blasters had the highest average attendance in most of the seasons they have played and it fell to 37,500 in 2017 because safety regulations reduced the stadium’s capacity to 41,000 as a part of 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup where Kochi was a venue.

According to former India international player Pappachen Pradeep, “In Kerala, the people support football tirelessly. It doesn’t matter if the team wins or loses, they are always there in high numbers. I’ve played at places like Kolkata, where if the team loses two-three matches on the spin, the numbers in the stadium diminish.

There is nothing like that in Kerala.” However Kerala Blasters have seen reduction in the average attendance below 30,000 on two seasons.
