What happens if South Africa loses to Pakistan?
What impact will the result of Pakistan-South Africa match have on India’s semi-final chances? Pakistan will face South Africa in their 4th Super12 game. Photo: AP KEY HIGHLIGHTS
Pakistan will face South Africa in their 4th Super 12 fixtureA defeat will rule Pakistan out of the 2022 T20 World CupPakistan have managed 1 win from 3 matches
With an aim to keep their semi-final hopes alive, Pakistan will square off against South Africa in the only game to be played on Thursday (November 3). The fixture will be played at the Sydney Cricket Ground from 1:30 PM IST. The toss will take place at 1:00 PM IST.
Both teams have much to gain from this fixture. A win will see South Africa finish at the top spot in the points table whereas a victory will keep Pakistan afloat. A defeat at the hands of South Africa will make Pakistan the second team to crash out of group 2 as they won’t be able to reach the tally of 6 points.
Related News Even a win won’t give a semi-final ticket to Pakistan and they will have to win their last match, against Bangladesh, and hope for the results of other matches to go in their favour. With 3 wins from 4 matches, India sit at the top spot and are on the cusp of making it to the next round.
But they still aren’t confirmed to finish in the top 2 and the fixture between Pakistan and South Africa can have a big impact on India’s chances. How? Here are the complete details – First things first, a win over Zimbabwe will see India qualify for the semi-final. The results of other matches won’t have any impact on India’s chances if the Men in Blue win.
But that fixture is on November 6 and the fans will have to wait till then. The only reason why Pakistan are still alive in the tournament is because of their run-rate. They have an NRR of +0.765 and can enter the top 2 if they win their next 2 matches.
- If they defeat South Africa, Pakistan will jump to the 3rd spot with 4 points.
- And if they defeat Bangladesh as well, Pakistan can finish in top 2.
- It means that India’s chances depend on Pakistan’s journey if the Men in Blue lose to Zimbabwe.
- The results of Pakistan’s matches won’t have any impact on India if the Rohit Sharma-led side defeats Zimbabwe.
If South Africa defeat Pakistan, then India will all but qualify for the semi-final. Third-placed Bangladesh have 4 points in their account but at a below-par NRR of -1.276. Even if they win their last game and India lose to Zimbabwe, it won’t be practically possible for them (Bangladesh) to match the inaugural champion’s NRR of +0.730.
