What Is The Purpose Of An Excellent Education
Students become better persons – In order to fully understand the world, one needs to possess certain knowledge. Education enables children to acquire academic achievements they will need to interpret life situations, develop critical thinking, and make the best possible decisions.

Education helps people to better understand social relationships, needs, and behavior of other people. This is achieved not only by learning about certain phenomena in society, but also through specific activities, such as volunteer work in one’s community. Schools play a very important role in that sense, because it encourages students to change the world for the better together.

When empathy is combined with education, it creates accomplished young people with the knowledge that allows them to achieve a successful life. Of course, the main requirement is building a relationship of trust between students and teachers.

What is the importance of excellence in education?

Create or Clarify a Vision of Excellence – We begin with the vision — an excellent education for every child — and work backward from there. In order for any effort to be strategic and coherent, it is important to have a clear vision of the end goal. The Center understands excellence as much more than proficiency in a set of academic standards.

Rather, an excellent education also encourages students to be curious about the world around them, gives them the tools they need to explore and discover the things they are curious about, promotes their agency to affect change, builds their sense of self-worth, inspires their personal purpose and place in the community, and equips them with the knowledge and capacity to have economic and social success as adults.

We want that for every single child. What is your vision of excellence? Use your notion or vision of excellence to guide your work with students, families, teachers, staff, and community.

What is the meaning of excellence in education?

Defining excellence in schools – To demonstrate excellence, you need to be specific about what you are aiming for in a practical and tangible sense. In schools, we can define excellence against a set of values and outcomes that students strive to achieve.

  • These are constructs that make the research results meaningful.
  • The New South Wales Department of Education specify five categories of excellence in their School Excellence Framework : 1.
  • Culture A clear set of values and beliefs that is practised and reinforced by all authorities in the school.
  • A school that achieves excellence sets out their expectations for students, staff and parents – and they communicate that message regularly to their community.2.

Wellbeing This relates to the collective and individual needs of students including, but not limited to, psychological, physiological, belonging, self-esteem and self-actualisation – according to Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, Wellbeing in schools revolves around the key ways that different groups can come together, get involved and be fulfilled in their learning journey.3.

  1. Curriculum and Learning This is a structured plan of action that delivers a high standard and equitable academic opportunities for students.
  2. The NSW Department of Education states that, “curriculum programs and teaching practices effectively develop the knowledge, understanding and skills of all students, using evidence-based teaching practices and innovative delivery mechanisms where appropriate.” 4.

Assessment and Reporting This refers to the ability and resources needed to effectively monitor, plan and report on student performance to parents and carers. Consistent practices in this category should be evident school-wide and across all learning areas.

  1. These aims may include the development of understanding, rationality, kindness, and honesty,
  2. Various researchers emphasize the role of critical thinking in order to distinguish education from indoctrination,
  3. Some theorists require that education results in an improvement of the student while others prefer a value-neutral definition of the term.

In a slightly different sense, education may also refer, not to the process, but to the product of this process: the mental states and dispositions possessed by educated people. Education originated as the transmission of cultural heritage from one generation to the next.

Today, educational goals increasingly encompass new ideas such as the liberation of learners, skills needed for modern society, empathy, and complex vocational skills, Types of education are commonly divided into formal, non-formal, and informal education, Formal education takes place in education and training institutions, is usually structured by curricular aims and objectives, and learning is typically guided by a teacher,

In most regions, formal education is compulsory up to a certain age and commonly divided into educational stages such as kindergarten, primary school and secondary school, Nonformal education occurs as addition or alternative to formal education. It may be structured according to educational arrangements, but in a more flexible manner, and usually takes place in community-based, workplace-based or civil society-based settings.

Lastly, informal education occurs in daily life, in the family, any experience that has a formative effect on the way one thinks, feels, or acts may be considered educational, whether unintentional or intentional, In practice there is a continuum from the highly formalized to the highly informalized, and informal learning can occur in all three settings.

For instance, homeschooling can be classified as nonformal or informal, depending upon the structure. Regardless of setting, educational methods include teaching, training, storytelling, discussion, and directed research, The methodology of teaching is called pedagogy,

  • Education is supported by a variety of different philosophies, theories and empirical research agendas,
  • There are movements for education reforms, such as for improving quality and efficiency of education towards relevance in students’ lives and efficient problem solving in modern or future society at large, or for evidence-based education methodologies,

A right to education has been recognized by some governments and the United Nations, Global initiatives aim at achieving the Sustainable Development Goal 4, which promotes quality education for all.

What is the purpose of excellence?

The title of this article is a quote from H. Jackson Brown, Jr. People often put the emphasis on perfection without realizing that perfection is impossible except in scientific laboratory experiments and mathematical applications. Most of the time, emphasizing perfection rather than excellence acts as an obstacle to progress.

  • As such, we will explore the cons of perfection and the pros of excellence in this article, as it will enable individuals and institutions to strive for excellence and effectiveness.
  • What Is Excellence? Colin Powell said, “If you are going to achieve excellence in big things, you develop the habit in little matters.

Excellence is not an exception, it is a prevailing attitude.” Excellence is about being the best, striving to be better, with an eye to delivering quality goods and services. People are not born with excellence. They cultivate it over a period of time through hard work, wise work, and smart work.

It emerges from continuous improvement over the past. It is a corollary of passion and performance. Excellence differentiates extraordinary people from ordinary people. Those who strive for excellence will have longevity in their endeavors. It is both the yardstick and the benchmark. When you benchmark against other achievers, you tend to improve and grow.

How to Achieve Excellence? People first must develop the mindset that achieving excellence is a journey, not a destination. They must set their goals in order to achieve excellence. There are certain tips that will help you achieve excellence, irrespective of your area of interest.

Be passionate: When you do what you love, you don’t feel that you are working any more, as you derive pleasure from it. Hence, you have to be passionate about whatever you do. In addition, involvement is essential for excellence. When you involve yourself, the sky is your limit. Spot your talents: Once you know your passions, it becomes easy for you to hone them. Acquire skills and abilities in tune with talents. People often search for skills by ignoring their inherent talents. Hence, spot your talents and build your competencies and capabilities in and around them. Read good books: Read good books and upgrade your knowledge constantly. Continuous learning broadens your horizons. Never become complacent with your existing knowledge. Keep reading good books that enrich you with the latest knowledge from multiple perspectives. Books provide diversified knowledge, information, and ideas that you can choose and that can help you grow. Constant learning is a boon. Reading good books by great authors will inspire you. If possible, note key points for future reference. Sometimes people think they know everything. There is always something that can be learned from each book, provided you have an open mind to learn and grow. In addition, different authors present content from different perspectives, thus enriching your knowledge. Work smart and wise: You must learn to work smartly, wisely, and hard in order to achieve excellence. There is a difference between working hard and smart work. Working hard is all about perspiration without any planning and preparation. In contrast, working smart is about thorough preparation with a proper blueprint to proceed, along with perspiration. Hard work consumes a lot of time, money, and resources, while smart work conserves time, money, and resources. Share your knowledge: Knowledge grows when it is shared. Develop an attitude to help and serve others. We brought nothing into this world and will take away nothing from this world when we die. What we can do is share our knowledge so people can benefit. Sharing your knowledge, writing articles, and mentoring others will sharpen your mind. You will get great pleasure when you see people growing in front of you. Solicit continuous feedback: Continuous feedback is essential for excellence. As feedback is the breakfast of champions, people must take feedback from others without any false ego. Feedback spots the chinks in the armor. It helps people to know their weaknesses so they can work toward improvement. In fact, continuous improvement paves the way for excellence. Manage constraints: There will be several constraints and obstacles in the path to achieving excellence. Some are internally created by human errors, and many are externally created by forces beyond human control. Hence, learn to manage both external and internal forces and factors that prevent you from achieving excellence.

Excellence vs. Perfection Do not confuse excellence with perfection as it is easy to achieve excellence, but tough to achieve perfection. Michael J. Fox once remarked, “I am careful not to confuse excellence with perfection. Excellence, I can reach for; perfection is God’s business.” Perfection is a phobia.

When you emphasize perfection too much, you tend to make more mistakes, resulting in failures. However, when you emphasize excellence, you tend to be comfortable as you find it easier to execute and deliver. Excellence paves the way for improvement, while perfection paves the way for stagnation, limiting one’s creativity and innovation.

People often fail to deliver goods when emphasis is laid on perfection. However, excellence tolerates mistakes and failures, thus allowing people to explore and experiment, and, in turn, paving the way for excellence. Excellence is feasible and possible, while perfection is a fantasy and often difficult to attain.

  1. Excellence is pleasure, while perfection is pressure.
  2. Tale of a Carpenter Excellence is about how you contribute to others.
  3. What goes around comes around.
  4. If you deliver something good, you get back good things in return.
  5. If you deliver something poor, you get back bad things in return.
  6. Here is the story of a carpenter.

A carpenter was very good at his work. He delivered his best and dedicated his entire life to his profession and services provided to his employer. Having reached old age, he told his employer about his intention to retire from service. The owner did not appreciate losing a dedicated carpenter.

Since the carpenter had grown old and wanted to be relieved, the owner gave him his final assignment of constructing a home. The carpenter accepted the assignment unwillingly. He did his work without any interest for months, and somehow completed his final assignment. And then the carpenter went to the employer and informed him about the completion of the construction.

The employer asked the carpenter to come the next day, as that would be his final working day. The next day, the employer gave the carpenter the keys to the newly constructed home as a gift for his retirement, and thanked him for his long service of dedication and excellence.

  1. The carpenter was shocked as he had not realized that the home he had made without any interest actually belonged to him.
  2. He regretted not maintaining enthusiasm and excellence during the construction.
  3. Had he maintained excellence toward the end of his career, he would have ended up with a better home.

The moral of the story: What goes around, comes back to us. Excellence Is Not an Act, but a Habit I have collected many quotes from the last 30 years that I use when I write articles. I also have newspaper clippings from many years, detailing important events and activities.

  1. Whenever I write articles or teach students, I refer to them.
  2. Above all, I have the habit of jotting down key ideas and insights that help me write articles and teach my students better.
  3. Every time I write an article, I always think of presenting it better than I did before and in a more succinct way without compromising the essence, and that has paved the way for my excellence in writing.

However, I still need to improve a lot. Aristotle rightly said, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” There is a growing interest in excellence on the part of organizations. For instance, McKinsey’s Tom Peters and Robert Waterman published a book, “In Search of Excellence—Lessons from America’s Best-Run Companies.” The book was famous for the 7S framework, where 7S stands for strategy, structure, systems, staff, skills, style, and shared values.

It was researched at 43 of the Fortune 500 list of top-performing companies in America. In addition, Jim Collins’ book, “Built to Last,” was researched at 18 companies. Currently, companies crave excellence to beat their competition and stay ahead of others. Excellence is the only thing that makes people walk on their toes to deliver amazing results.

Why is excellent important?

– When we strive for excellence, we feel satisfied with a job well done. We learn from our mistakes and dont let them define us. We enjoy the process, not just the outcome of our endeavors. And we remain flexible and can adjust our standards and goals as needed.

  1. We dont get stuck on all-or-nothing thinking or self-criticism.
  2. And when we strive for excellence rather than perfection, we aim high, but we keep our lives in balance; we value self-care, fun, and relationships, in addition to our accomplishments.

Why is excellence important for success?

“Excellence is the Result of Caring more than others think is Wise, Risking more than others think is Safe, Dreaming more than others think is Practical, and Expecting more than others think is Possible.” Ronnie Oldham As with anything we do in life success or excellence is a CHOICE.

Do we select success because it is easier? Do we select success because it is transactional? Do we not aim for excellence as it is more systematic and less transactional? Because these two words are used interchangeably we must first define “success” and “excellence.” Second we must determine what is transactional and what is systematic as that is a major difference between the two.

Being successful does not necessarily mean you will be excellent, and being excellent does not necessarily mean you will be successful. Success is attaining or achieving cultural goals, which elevates one’s importance in the society in which he/she lives.

  • Excellence is the pursuit of quality in one’s work and effort, whether the culture recognizes it or not.
  • Success seeks the external, status, power, prestige, wealth, and privilege.
  • Excellence is internal – seeking satisfaction in having done your best.
  • Success is external – how you have done in comparison to others.

Excellence is how you have done in relation to your own potential. Success grants its rewards to a few, but it is the dream of the multitudes. Excellence is available to all, but is accepted only by a few. Success engenders a fantasy and a compulsive groping for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Excellence brings us down to reality with deep gratitude for the promise of joy when we do our best. Excellence cultivates principles, character, and integrity. Success may be cheap, and you can take shortcuts to get there. You will pay the full price for excellence; it is never discounted. Excellence will always cost you everything, but it is the most lasting and rewarding ideal.

Often when we speak of doing well in life we speak of how “successful” we are or how “successful” someone has been. It is rare that we describe ourselves or someone else as being a person of “excellence.” Success is something we readily accept whereas Excellence is something we rarely strive to achieve.

Ex-police officer and newspaper columnist Bob Vernon differentiates between “success versus excellence” as ” To succeed is to attain a desired object or desired result. It doesn’t necessarily mean doing one’s best.” He goes on to state; “On the other hand, to excel means to continue to improve or develop.

It includes a sense of rightness or goodness.” So while success and excellence have their similarities, the two are different. Aristotle was quotes as saying “Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those because we have acted rightly.

  • We are what we repeatedly do.
  • Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.” What drives you, success or excellence? Dr.

What are the three elements of excellence?

I recently read an article by the Institute of Operational Excellence, entitled ‘Operational Excellence starts with Culture’, It’s a four-page article, so if you don’t have time to read it, here’s the summary To achieve Operational Excellence, the existing corporate culture must be addressed head on.

Whilst I agree with this, and many other points made in the article, I can’t help but think there were a couple of other words missing from the title. Culture is actually one of three essential elements that make up a company’s individual journey to Operational Excellence. The other two are Leadership & Strategy and Continuous Improvement.

When all three elements are addressed together, the journey to excellence becomes much more achievable. Leadership & Strategy Operational Excellence is a strategic plan that requires effective leadership from the very highest level, through middle management, right down to the shop floor. Leaders who can drive transformational change in an organisation are worth their weight in gold. Every employee at every level of the organisation must understand their role in the value chain and why their contribution matters. People must feel empowered to make changes if something isn’t working. It’s all about engaging the hearts and minds of your people to turn your vision and ideas into sustainable change. There are many Lean management tools available to take with you on your chosen path: Lean, Six-Sigma, TPS, and TOC, to name a few. The challenge is selecting the right ones for your organisation, knowing how to use them, when to use them, and in what situation.

A commitment to continuous improvement is not enough on its own. It requires supportive leadership and the buy-in of your people. Interlocking blocks All three of these core elements are interlinked and should be given equal considered in the quest for Operational Excellence. Different organisations may have different starting points, but a deep understanding all three areas is the best preparation for the ride.

So perhaps the article title should have been ‘Effective leaders drive change and promote a culture of continuous improvement to achieve Operational Excellence!’ Doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, does it!
