You don’t have to be a relative to be someone’s financial sponsor. So, a friend can become a financial sponsor. However, the person must still have someone else who acts as the sponsor or their visa or green card application. That sponsor must be an employee, relative, or fiancé(e). If someone else sponsors the person’s visa or green card application, a friend may act as their financial sponsor.

To become a financial sponsor, you must file an I-864, or an Affidavit of Support. In this affidavit, you promise to support the non-citizen once the non-citizen enters the U.S. To be a financial sponsor, you must:

  • Have an income that is at least 125 percent of the federal poverty level (For information on the federal poverty level, click,) If your income is not this high, the government may look at certain assets, such as bank accounts, stocks, bonds, and other property; the government may consider these assets in determining whether you are financially qualified to be a sponsor. If you do not meet the financial qualifications, other family members may add their income to your income level, if these other family members sign a contract on Form I-864. If, even after other family members add their income to yours, your income is still not high enough, another person must complete a separate affidavit as a joint sponsor.
  • If you are on active duty in the military, and you are sponsoring your spouse or unmarried child under 21, your income only needs to be 100% of the federal poverty guidelines, in order for you to sponsor an immigrant.

· Provide information about the immigrant you are sponsoring. This includes their name, date of birth, address, country of citizenship, alien registration number (if any) and phone number (if any). · Provide your name, address, date of birth, citizenship, country of birth, and social security number.

In this contract, you also promise to notify USCIS of any change in your address, by filing Form I-865, within 30 days of the address change. If you sign this contract, and then do not support the immigrant, the immigrant may sue you for breach of contract.

I’d had many mentors in my life, but I had always heard it was a sponsor who could ultimately change your life and career. While a mentor is someone whose highest value is when you are in room with them, providing you advice and skills to grow your career, a “sponsor” is someone whose highest value is when you are not in the room with them – such as advocating for your next promotion and making connections to senior leaders both inside and outside of your company.

My sponsor and I weren’t just the typical advisor-advisee relationship; we became what I call “sparring partners.” Every time we met, we had really important conversations that shifted the direction of my thinking through deep questioning. I asked her for help getting promotions, debated big decisions with her, and began to gain new opportunities just by the conversations she had with others when I wasn’t in the room.

Looking back, making the most of my first sponsor relationship changed my life. Now I take a very different approach. Everyone can have their own sponsors, but they need to learn how to make it worthwhile for both parties. Want to make the most of the sponsors in your life? Here are seven ways to shore up your relationship:

When looking for sponsors, reach out to them first with what you want to achieve. They are there to help you create your future reality, but you need to define what your future reality is for them first. Be clear on what a sponsor can do, and what makes sense to ask him or her. Don’t ask for too much at the beginning. Nurture the relationship and show that you’re worth it based on your skills, expertise and potential. Ask your sponsor for help. You never know what you can learn. Male sponsors and sponsors from different sectors and cultures can be great advocates for young women. Get out of your comfort zone and build your own personal sponsors. Learn how to use offline and online sponsors. In-person meetings with sponsors are much more helpful than emails or phone calls. Be prepared to know and ask for what you need when you are in proximity to them. Don’t expect email responses all the time. Give them a call, or plan time to meet them. Share with them that they are on your personal board. Be careful if you work for a sponsor. Sponsors who work with you will have a set of loyalties to others; thus, you must be careful in managing this sponsor relationship.
