It’s very important to adopt the concept of Education 4.0 in the Management Institute. During the research on how to adapt the concept, I find answers to very basic but very important questions: 1) What is the basic purpose of education and training? The basic purpose of education and training is to empower an individual to lead a successful life and contribute best for him, his family, society, and nation and to humanity.

  1. Therefore training is the most effective tool to achieve this outcome.2) What is the main asset of any nation? Since youth are the main asset of any nation, education becomes the most powerful tool for social transformation.
  2. India’s demographic structure is changing, while the world grows older, the Indian population is becoming younger and by 2025 about two-thirds of Indians will be in its workforce.

A continuously growing older world offers a huge opportunity for talented and competent.3) Does the entire system needs to be transformed? Our current system of education comes from the Prussian system which was designed to create good employees and an obedient workforce, who blindly follow orders and always need to be instructed.

  • Whether our higher education is ” relevant to the era “?
  • Why should a student pay for education, when he cannot earn his livelihood after getting his ” Degree “?
  • Why should a student attend classes, when more updated knowledge is available to him via o utside resources ?

The answer to the above three questions is not encouraging and positive. We don’t want to be a ‘ degree producing factory ‘ like approx.904 universities and more than 47,000 colleges are operating in India, not bothering about the employability of their students, even as the country tries to keep pace with the fast-paced information revolution, especially when the world recognizes those equipped with relevant knowledge and technologies, and competencies and skills to apply them.

We find most of our universities are not exactly the sources of great ideas, innovation, and entrepreneurial activities whereas, in other countries, universities and colleges are great sources of new ideas and innovations. With entrepreneurship emerging as a preferred choice, the education system must have enabling provisions in its syllabus to encourage the development of the entrepreneurial mindset.4) What is the future of jobs? The World Economic Forum @ Davos-2016 announced the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and predicted a ‘ major shift about the future of jobs ‘.

Disruptive technologies, driven by Industry 4.0 have begun adding more fire to the already volatile, uncertain, complex & ambiguous world and impacting our lives, our relationships, also the future of our jobs. The technological breakthrough is rapidly shifting the frontiers between the work task performed by humans and those performed by machines.

In 2018, an average of 71% of the total task was performed by humans in industries across 12 selected sectors; but by 2022 it is expected to reduce to just 58%. Therefore, increasingly more jobs are likely to be taken over by machines, However, not all is gloomy – a new set of jobs is expected to emerge where Human skills and EQ will be most important and valued.

As machine intelligence rises, education needs to produce better human competence to drive MI and AI. Industry 4.0 is defined by Connected Cyber-physical systems, powered by IoT and fueled by data, creating a fully interconnected society. In such a hyper-connected disruptive world, Education has no option but to adapt to these changes in Industry which are brought about by disruptive technologies.

  1. The solution is an implementation of Education 4.0.
  2. Since Education 4.0 denotes changes, relevant to Industry 4.0, we find Lectures and Memorization ( Education 1.0 ), Internet Enabled Learning ( Education 2.0 ), and Knowledge-based education ( Education 3.0 ) are not enough.

Classrooms will be flipped, which means the theoretical part is learned outside the classroom, whereas the practical part shall be taught face to face, interactively.
  2. Personalized learning. Students will learn with study tools that adapt to the capabilities of a student. This means above average students shall be challenged with harder tasks and questions when a certain level is achieved. Students who experience difficulties with a subject will get the opportunity to practice more until they reach the required level. Students will be positively reinforced during their individual learning processes. This can result in to positive learning experiences and will diminish the amount of students losing confidence about their academic abilities. Furthermore, teachers will be able to see clearly which students need help in which areas.
  3. Free choice. Though every subject that is taught aims for the same destination, the road leading towards that destination can vary per student. Similarly to the personalized learning experience, students will be able to modify their learning process with tools they feel are necessary for them. Students will learn with different devices, different programs and techniques based on their own preference. Blended learning, flipped classrooms and BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) form important terminology within this change.
  4. Project based. As careers are adapting to the future freelance economy, students of today will adapt to project based learning and working. This means they have to learn how to apply their skills in shorter terms to a variety of situations. Students should already get acquainted with project based learning in high school. This is when organizational, collaborative, and time management skills can be taught as basics that every student can use in their further academic careers.
  5. Field experience. Because technology can facilitate more efficiency in certain domains, curricula will make room for skills that solely require human knowledge and face-to-face interaction. Thus, experience in ‘the field’ will be emphasized within courses. Schools will provide more opportunities for students to obtain real-world skills that are representative to their jobs. This means curricula will create more room for students to fulfill internships, mentoring projects and collaboration projects (e.g.).
  6. Data interpretation. Though mathematics is considered one of three literacies, it is without a doubt that the manual part of this literacy will become irrelevant in the near future. Computers will soon take care of every statistical analysis, and describe and analyse data and predict future trends. Therefore, the human interpretation of these data will become a much more important part of the future curricula. Applying the theoretical knowledge to numbers, and using human reasoning to infer logic and trends from these data will become a fundamental new aspect of this literacy.
  7. Exams will change completely. As courseware platforms will assess students capabilities at each step, measuring their competencies through Q&A might become irrelevant, or might not suffice. Many argue that exams are now designed in such a way, that students cram their materials, and forget the next day. Educators worry that exams might not validly measure what students should be capable of when they enter their first job. As the factual knowledge of a student can be measured during their learning process, the application of their knowledge is best tested when they work on projects in the field.
  8. Student ownership. Students will become more and more involved in forming their curricula. Maintaining a curriculum that is contemporary, up-to-date and useful is only realistic when professionals as well as ‘youngsters’ are involved. Critical input from students on the content and durability of their courses is a must for an all-embracing study program.
  9. Mentoring will become more important. In 20 years, students will incorporate so much independence in to their learning process, that mentoring will become fundamental to student success. Teachers will form a central point in the jungle of information that our students will be paving their way through. Though the future of education seems remote, the teacher and educational institution are vital to academic performance.

These are exciting, provocative and potentially far-reaching challenges. For individuals and society, new educational tools and resources hold the promise of empowering individuals to develop a fuller array of competencies, skills and knowledge and of unleashing their creative potential.

In this way they are prepared in the most appropriate way possible for their later station in life. Whether this process works as well as it should is an important issue, and we explore it further when we discuss school tracking shortly.

Social and cultural innovation is a fourth function of education. Our scientists cannot make important scientific discoveries and our artists and thinkers cannot come up with great works of art, poetry, and prose unless they have first been educated in the many subjects they need to know for their chosen path.

These include socialization, social integration, social placement, and social and cultural innovation. Education also involves several latent functions, functions that are by-products of going to school and receiving an education rather than a direct effect of the education itself.

One of these is child care, Once a child starts kindergarten and then first grade, for several hours a day the child is taken care of for free. The establishment of peer relationships is another latent function of schooling. Most of us met many of our friends while we were in school at whatever grade level, and some of those friendships endure the rest of our lives.

A final latent function of education is that it keeps millions of high school students out of the full-time labor force, This fact keeps the unemployment rate lower than it would be if they were in the labor force.
