NCTE has also asked the varsity not to admit students to the programmes. In a letter to the head of the department, Centre of Physical Education of the varsity, the regional director of NCTE, Sanjay Gupta has cautioned that it was illegal to run unrecognised teacher education courses. The NCTE decision has cast a shadow on the employment prospects of students of the department.
“As per section 17 (4) of the NCTE Act, 1993, a qualification in teacher education obtained from an institution not recognised by NCTE is not valid for the purpose of employment under the Central government, any state government or university or any school, college or other educational body aided by the central government or state government,” the letter said.
NCTE has pointed out that the varsity has failed to provide faculty list and land documents and unauthorized running of BPEd courses, among other things, as reasons for rejecting the application submitted by the department of physical education for offering BPEd and MPEd courses. Meanwhile varsity physical education department authorities said that varsity will appeal to NCTE to reconsider the order by the statutory body overseeing teacher education in the country.
“Also many other universities in the state are yet to get NCTE approvals for BPEd and MPEd courses” the official said.
