How does Computer help in the education process? – Innovation in Computer technology has a profound impact on education. It forms a part of the school curriculum as it is an essential part of every individual today. Computer education in schools plays a major noteworthy role in the career development of young children.

Computers in Teaching & Learning Process (CAL) Being actively used in various educational institutes like schools, colleges & big universities, computers are used to aid the learning process of students. Professors in colleges & teachers in schools take help of audio-visual techniques to prepare lesson plans for children.

For this, they use Microsoft PowerPoint to prepare electronic presentations about their lectures. These electronic presentations can be shown on multimedia and sound projectors in classrooms. It is an interesting and simple method to learn for students.

Multimedia (Sight and sound) presentations are easy to deliver for teachers also as these presentations spare a great deal of time and effort. Research Computers can be used for online education & research. With the help of the internet, students can find useful information about their projects, assignments and also can take useful help from other researchers as they store & organize their research materials in computers.

Computer-Based Training (CBT) In CBT (Computer Based Training), various projects & educational programs are prepared or set up with the assistance of expert educators and audio-visual media help. These educational programs are generally set up in the shape of lectures on a specific subject/ topic & are given on CDs. What Are The Uses Of Computer In Education

Technological developments have influenced all sectors of our lives including communication, transportation, health and education. It has caused significant changes to human lives it’s either, positive or a negative change.

Using computer at schools brings significant role among students and teachers. Children can now access Global libraries such as online video tutorials, free e-books, and FAQ forums where they can grasp concepts easily. Without the computer, students have to rely on books given in the classroom or in the libraries.

And if they don’t understand the material, they only have limited resources in studying. With the internet, the whole world opened an infinite amount of useful and relevant information. Students can find many different ways to solve a certain problem given to them.

  • Through computer and internet, they can interact with people having same issues and can learn from each other.
  • Computers have supplied infinite resources for learning and made education more flexible and easy to access.
  • Students can now gain knowledge and information not only from classroom assignments and libraries but also from available online resources.

Video tutorials, free or paid e-books and several forums also contribute in the resources that are needed by the students. Huge and organized storage of information is another characteristic of a computer. Teachers and students can download and store large amounts of lecture notes, presentation and other educational materials.

Education made readily available to everyone and provided by facilities because people can learn at their convenience. Apart from the mentioned advantages, computers also influenced students’ personal interaction with their classmates and mentors. As assignments and reports can be done online, there’s no need to do the traditional way of presentation.

Computers ensure the accuracy of teaching text materials as it has a word processing software that provide spelling and grammar checking tool. The more teachers know about computers, the more they can teach the students in a proper way. Knowledge of both teachers and students should not stuck in computers only, they should also learn the access of Internet.

Quicker communication using computers in education is another impact why technology is important in school. Parents will know the progress of their children through computer and internet. They can check the examination results of their children as well as attendance reports and their curricular and non-curricular activities.

Schools should provide their students the opportunity to access the Internet and the World Wide Web; it will help them to develop the knowledge about the current technology. The use of computers is quite necessary because it helps people to maintain the real world opportunities.

Computer technology can’t be underestimated, as it continues to evolve in schools and workplace. It made the access and the provisions of the education services easier, convenient to handle and cheaper. It also made the life of the teacher comfortable in handling classes and creating teaching materials.

Computers have revolutionized education and it is leading to the bright future. Advantages of Having Computer in Education : Advantages of Having Computer in Education

When was computer used in education?

Origins – College campuses used computer mainframes in education since the initial days of this technology, and throughout the initial development of computers. The earliest large-scale study of educational computer usage conducted for the National Science Foundation by The American Institute for Research concluded that 13% of the nation’s public high schools used computers for instruction, although non-users still outnumbered users at a ratio of 2 to 1.

  • The study also concluded that computers proved to be very popular with students, and that applications run on early models included sports statistic managers, administration tools, and physics simulators.
  • In 1975, Apple Inc.
  • Began donating Apple 1 model computers to schools, and mainframes began to lose their former dominance over academic research.

Computer usage continued to grow rapidly throughout this era. In 1977, it was estimated that over 90% of students at Dartmouth College had used computers at some point in their college careers. Walter Koetke, the director of a Lexington, Massachusetts school system commented that, “It’s still possible for a student to get through here without using the computer, but he would certainly have to try to do it”.

  • In 1983, Drexel University became the first campus to require every student to purchase a laptop.
  • Computer-aided instruction gained widespread acceptance in schools by the early 1980s.
  • It was during this period that drilling and practice programs were first developed for exclusive classroom use.
  • Schools became divided over which computer manufacturers they were willing to support, with grade schools generally using Apple computers and high schools preferring DOS based machines.

Hardware shortages in schools became a major issue, leaving many teachers unable to provide enough computers for students to use. Despite this, by 1989 computer usage shifted from being a relative rarity in American public schools, to being present in nearly every school district,

What was the first computer used for education?

A Brief History of Computers in Schools The first school computers were mainframe computers. As with all mainframe installations, the computer was physically located away from the end users, so teachers and students never saw or touched the case containing the processor.

These machines were used for instruction in the simplest terms: Students were presented with information, and then they were presented with questions to check their understanding of the information. Feedback was given and instructional decisions were made based on their responses (Bushnell, 1963). In this first version of computer-based education, teaching was by the computer.

The second phase began when desktop computers arrived on the consumer market in the mid to late 1970’s, and those devices replaced mainframes as the computers of choice in schools (as well as in businesses and organizations in most other industries).

Desktop computers were less expensive and easier to manage than mainframe computers; and even in small numbers, they provided educationally relevant capacity. In the 1980’s a fortunate teacher might have one or two Apple IIc computers in her classroom. Next to the computer, students would find a plastic box, which contained application disks and those were inserted into the disk drive before the computer was powered on.

The application was loaded from the disk as the computer booted, and it was the only application that could be used without rebooting the computer; multitasking required multiple machines. Managing computers in that classroom was largely a matter of plugging them in, labeling disks to know which application each contained, knowing how to use the applications, and how to store data on diskettes, which were similar to those used to load applications.

With computers physically located in classrooms, students began creating digital information primarily in the form of simple programs and word processing files. They also began exploring; virtual wagon trains crossing North America in the 19th century and virtual pursuits of hypothetical criminals across the globe were popular desktop adventures.

In the early 1990’s, the World Wide Web opened the Internet to commercial and consumer users, the “dot com bubble” filled and burst, and school technology planners began the third phase of school ICT planning as they started connecting schools and users to the Internet.

  • By the end of the 20 th century, school leaders (along with the first generation of information technology experts to work in schools) had connected almost every classroom in the United States to the Internet.
  • This work was supported by funds from the federal government and the Universal Service Program (commonly called e-rate); such funding continues, although the at a much-reduced level of funding.

As we approach the third decade of the 21st century, students in the United States, and other industrialized nations, attend schools in which computers abound. The machines may be desktop, laptop, tablet, or handheld models that are owned by and maintained by the school, or the devices may be owned by students and brought to school for educational (or distracting) purposes.

Almost all of these computers are connected to a network managed by school employees. School networks include filters and other hardware and software to protect users and devices, but many of the mobile devices that students bring are connected to the Internet through the telecommunications networks, so they by-pass the school’s network and its protections.
