Is Foreign distance degree valid in India?
Be careful while selecting degree courses abroad which are of shorter duration than the ones in India or are in distance learning mode. – Initially, equivalence was accorded by the AIU on a course to course basis only after the proposal for equivalence of foreign qualification was received from an Indian mission abroad or from the university concerned.(Abhimanyu Sinha) Do you do your due diligence before selecting a programme or institution abroad for higher studies, especially in the UK, Australia, West Europe, China or Russia? If not, then you must start the process now to check if your qualification or course would be given the equivalence (considered at par with a course) in India for higher studies, professional practice and jobs.
Though the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), which grants equivalence to these courses, had relaxed certain norms on recognition of certain foreign university qualifications a few months ago, some courses are still not treated with parity in India. For instance, students getting degrees from foreign universities for programmes of a shorter duration than similar programmes in India will find it easier to get equivalence and recognition in India.
However, degrees for medicine and law get equivalence only from professional bodies. Read more: Who’s checking that foreign degree? Till mid-2015, programmes in foreign institutions were required to be completed in full-time regular mode as those of Indian universities as per AIU rules.
Just like in India, the duration of bachelor’s programmes in the foreign university had to be of three years and master’s courses of two years. A number of foreign universities allow students to complete their postgraduate degree quickly (compared to Indian institutes) as acceptance of credits and credit transfer is common in a number of foreign and Indian universities.
These courses were not given equivalence in India, but the AIU later changed its policy to accommodate programmes shortened on account of credits accepted by foreign universities. “While AIU does not relax the requirements for the minimum duration of degrees, the duration instead is measured in terms of precise number of months/years and completion of the number of semesters/trimesters.
Professional degrees awarded by foreign universities which also entitle the student to practice a profession in India in disciplines such as medicine, nursing, pharmacy, law and architecture are given equivalence by the respective professional councils,” says an AIU official. Initially, equivalence was accorded by the AIU on a course to course basis only after the proposal for equivalence of foreign qualification was received from an Indian mission abroad or from the university concerned, adds the official.
Other problem areas that need to be addressed are vocational degrees and non-degree qualifications such as proficiency, certificate or diploma-level examination conducted either by universities or by non-university level bodies which are not given equivalence.
Two-year (fast track) degrees awarded by foreign accredited universities are also not recognised. Degrees granted for courses pursued on offshore campuses of foreign universities are only valid in India if the offshore campus is duly approved by the competent authorities in that country. Foreign degrees awarded to students through pathway or diploma-level institutions are not given recognition as well by the AIU.
Open distance learning, online degrees and those in the virtual mode from foreign institutions are also not treated equally.

Is distance education degree valid in India?
Is Online/Distance Degree Valid for Government Jobs? – YES! Degrees obtained through the online or the open and distance learning (ODL) mode are completely valid if you are applying for government jobs. If you are applying for a job in the central government, then you must know that you have to appear for and clear an entrance examination to get the job.
- However, there is an eligibility criteria for the aspirants.
- Only the ones who fulfill these eligibility criteria are allowed to give the entrance examination.
- Now, this eligibility criteria usually mentions the highest qualification that the aspirant needs to have.
- For example, the eligibility requirement can be that the aspirant must have completed their bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
Hence, since the online/distance degrees are considered equivalent to the regular degree, it makes you eligible to give the entrance exam for central government recruitment. Similar is the case with the jobs in the State Government. Any student with a relevant degree in either regular mode, online mode, or open and distance learning (ODL) mode can apply for state government recruitments.
(There might be a few state government jobs wherein due to certain circumstances there might not be an entrance examination. However, in this case, also degrees equivalent to regular ones are acceptable which means online/distance degrees are valid.) These government recruitments judge the aspirants mainly on the basis of the entrance examination, therefore they accept students with the required degree irrespective of the mode of learning.
Therefore, online/distance degrees are very much valid for the eligibility criteria, all you’ve got to do to get the job is ace the written exam and the interview (if any). However, the university from which you pursue the online/distance degree must be approved by the government regulatory body- University Grants Commission (UGC) and Distance Education Bureau (DEB). This approval is a must! This is because without the approval of UGC and DEB the degrees will stand invalid.

Is distance education degree equal to regular?
Is Online Degree Equal to Regular Degree? – Yes, a degree obtained through the online/distance mode is equivalent to a degree obtained through the regular mode. Well of course there are many differences between the two but that does not affect the validity of the online/distance degree.
The degrees obtained through the online/distance mode are as authentic as the regular ones and make you eligible for jobs or higher education in both government and private sector. However, the only requirement is that the college you pursue your online/distance degree must be recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) which is a statutory body that has been set up by the Ministry of Education (MoE) of India.
The college must also be recognised by the Distance Education Bureau (DEB), a bureau of UGC which is specifically in charge of distance/online education in India. Of course, there are numerous differences between the two modes of education such as in the distance and online mode, you do not get hands-on practical training because everything happens virtually. However, all these differences are irrelevant as the validity of the degree stands the same.
If you have an online/distance degree, then chances are that you will face situations where an applicant with an offline degree will be preferred over you. This is because the traditional and offline degrees are considered to be better but at the same time, the recruiters do not have the right to disqualify you based on your online/distance degree.
UGC in its notification has stated that all online/distance degrees offered by institutions recognized by DEB and UGC will be treated as equivalent to the regular and offline degrees. Now you must be thinking that online/distance degrees are not beneficial as people still believe offline degrees to be better.
No that isn’t the case. Online/distance are not all that bad, in fact, in many cases, they are better than the regular ones. When it comes to domain-specific or skill-specific courses like blockchain, AI & ML, Cyber Security, etc, recruiters look for the skills and knowledge of the applicant in these particular subjects and not the degree that the candidate holds.
However, there are hardly any offline courses that specifically teach a single specialisation. Not even the IITs have any courses dedicated to subjects such as data science, cyber security, AI & ML, blockchain, etc. This is where online courses are helpful.
Many big companies such as Apple, EY, Google, etc have made graduation optional for candidates applying to their firms as they test the candidates solely based on their skills and knowledge. This was just a brief differentiation between the two modes of learning just to explain the fact that online/distance degrees are equivalent to offline ones.
There are other major differences as well. Let us describe them in detail one by one.
