No country can achieve sustainable economic development without substantial investment in education. Usually, education is provided in schools, colleges and universities.

The school system in Manipur state has four levels – lower primary (age 6 to 10), upper primary (11 and 12), secondary (13 to 15) and senior secondary (17 and 18). The overall situation of primary, secondary and senior secondary school education of Manipur state is good as the state has been focusing on improving the quality of its schools.

The state has witnessed an upward curve in its literacy rate from 64.83% in Census 2001 to 74.04% in Census 2011. The drop-out rate at primary level (I-V) in the state reduced from 18.42% in 2007-08 to 11.55% in 2011-12. While the drop-out rate was reduced from 4.33% to 1.84% at the upper primary level (VI-VIII).

• A separate Department of Education was created for the first time in Manipur on January 20, 1950, to regulate the education system of the state.
• At present, the Education Department of Manipur has been divided into 4 (four) different entities viz (1) Department of Education (University and Higher Education), (2) Department of Education (S), (3) State Council of Educational Research and Training, Government of Manipur and (4) Department of Adult Education.

To regulate the school education in the state, the Board of Secondary Education, Manipur was established in 1972. The Board of Secondary Education regulates the functioning of primary to higher secondary schools in the state.
