Development – Zac Efron was quoted in People Magazine as saying, “I can tell you that if the script is good and if we all agree on a final script, then there’s nothing that is going to hold us back from doing it. We have fun making these movies and that’s very rare in this business.” Rumors persisted of ongoing salary disputes between Disney and the lead performers, particularly Efron.

According to Rachel Abramowitz, as reported online by the Chicago Tribune, “an eclectic cross-section of Hollywood insiders think Efron should get a cool $5 million for High School Musical 3, the theatrical version of the franchise, which Disney hoped to make before the Writers Guild strike and Screen Actors Guild strike shut down Hollywood for several months.

Efron declined to comment for the article, and although contract negotiations still are ongoing, sources say Efron is being offered a salary closer to $3 million, not $5 million, for the follow-up, which focuses on senior year at East High. Whatever the price, he’s still perceived as a steal.” The film was originally titled Haunted High School Musical with plans of a Halloween theme that were later scrapped.

  1. Ortega stated that pre-production would most likely start in January 2008.
  2. Filming began May 3, 2008, at East High School in Salt Lake City, Utah,
  3. He stated that the script had been submitted before the writers’ strike started and that they were developing music.
  4. He added that filming would take place in Salt Lake City as in the first two films, hinted that the plot will be something of the nature of the Wildcats’ final year in high school and stated, “it looks like we’ve rounded up the cast.” Before filming began, the HSM3 board and cast held a press conference at East High School announcing the start of filming.

The film was set for release in theaters in the United States on October 24, 2008, though the film was to open in several countries, including the United Kingdom, at least one week earlier. The film had an $11 million budget and a 40-day shooting period.

Why did Gabriella leave in HSM3?

High School Musical 3: Senior Year – Troy and Gabriella singing “Right Here, Right Now”. Towards the end of their senior year, Troy and Gabriella are still dating and are very serious about their relationship. During the championship game against West High, Troy looks to Gabriella for support and she encourages him to keep trying and, ultimately, to win.

This all happens while they sing Now Or Never, Later, at the celebration at Troy’s house, Gabriella and Troy hang out in his tree house and discuss their futures, namely the fact that Gabriella has already been accepted by Stanford University while Troy is being pushed towards U of A, two schools that are 1,053 miles from each other.

Both teens are clearly uncomfortable with the idea of such a long distance separating them, and decide to focus on the present for the moment. They then sing Right Here, Right Now, Troy and Gabriella dance in the rain while singing “Can I Have This Dance?” The Wildcats are later recruited to help with the school musical, Senior Year, and Gabriella mentions the idea of staging the perfect prom. Later, on the rooftop, Troy asks her to go to prom with him, both teens admitting that it is the first time they will be attending a dance together or alone, and Gabriella teaches him how to waltz while they sing Can I Have This Dance? They nearly share a kiss in the rain but are interrupted by the school bell ringing.

Their relationship develops as they practice for the musical by singing A Night To Remember and Just Want To Be With You, and one day after rehearsal Troy takes Gabriella home, and while they sit in her backyard, she chides him that he should be able to tell his dad and Chad that he actually enjoys performing.

He replies that while she and her mom both chose Stanford as the place she should be, he feels that University of Albuquerque was chosen for him not by him, and admits that he’s been talking to schools other than U of A. Gabriella also admits that she has some decisions left to make, but her mother cuts her off before she can tell Troy what she means.

Gabriella learns that she has been accepted into Stanford’s ‘Freshmen Honors Program’ and would be leaving two weeks early, missing prom, the show, and graduation. Taylor encourages her to go, but Gabriella claims that she has been considering staying in Albuquerque, obviously in order to stay closer to Troy at U of A.

When Troy learns about this, from a sneaky Sharpay, he sneaks into her room with a picnic and insists that she should go because she “can’t put off something as great as Stanford.” Although Troy’s insistence does ultimately convince her to go, she finds that it is too hard for her to say goodbye and leaves without a word, planning to return for prom, the show, and graduation. Troyella kissing Troy and Gabriella kiss after the “Can I Have This Dance? (Reprise)” After two weeks apart, Gabriella makes a phone call to Troy and tells him that she won’t be coming back because she can’t handle having to say goodbye to her friends and, more importantly, him, again.

She admits that she loves him (the first time it’s said by either of them), but hangs up without giving him a chance to reply. She is later surprised when Troy shows up at Stanford on the night of prom back in Albuquerque. He explains that “if going to have a last dance at East High, it’s going to be with ” and manages to convince her to come back to East High with him for the show and graduation by singing Can I Have This Dance? (Reprise),

At the end of ‘Senior Year’, Troy reveals that he’s made the decision to attend UC Berkeley to study both basketball and theater, a school that is only 32.7 miles away from “the person who inspires his heart.” Gabriella is extremely touched by this, and, after graduating, the two head off to college, still together.

Who sang for Troy in hsm2?

Troy’s performance of “Get’cha Head in the Game” in High School Musical is arguably one of the most famous moments in Disney Channel history, but our minds have been totally blown by the truth behind the vocals of the movie. Though he starred as Troy Bolton in the franchise, Zac Efron ‘s voice can barely be heard in any of the first movie’s songs.

It turns out he recorded them but didn’t make the final cut, and most of his parts were sung instead by actor Drew Seeley, with Zac lip-syncing on-screen. And Zac wasn’t told why, he said in a 2007 Orlando Sentinel interview recently unearthed by J-14, “In the first movie, after everything was recorded, my voice was not on them,” he said.

“I was not really given an explanation. It just kind of happened that way. Unfortunately, it put me in an awkward position. It’s not something I expected to be addressed. Then High School Musical blew up. I’m very fortunate that Drew has gotten proper credit and also that I’ve gotten the opportunity to come back and try it again with my own voice.” He said he believes Drew is a better singer than him, while he’s just “a regular kid that can carry a tune.” However, he was adamant about getting to sing in the second movie.

  1. That was a very huge point for me,” he said.
  2. I had to put my foot down and fight to get my voice on these tracks.” As a result, it’s Efron’s voice you’re hearing in High School Musical 2 and High School Musical 3: Senior Year,
  3. So while “Get’cha Head in the Game” might not have been Zac, it’s at least comforting to know that “Bet On It” was totally him.

He also went on to sing in Hairspray, and he’ll be co-starring in the musical The Greatest Showman, It’s hard to imagine what the entire High School Musical franchise would sound like if he hadn’t fought to have his voice heard — literally. Why didn t Zac Efron sing in the first HSM?

The movie was filmed at East High School in Salt Lake City, Utah. Students still use Sharpay’s pink locker. The falling snow in the New Year’s scenes was potato flakes. Zac Efron ‘s singing voice was that of Drew Seeley, who tested for the role of Troy.

  • Seeley sang the entirety of “Get’cha Head in the Game” and the reprise of “What I’ve Been Looking For.” Efron only sings the first four lines of “Start of Something New,” the first sentence of “Breaking Free,” and during the scene on the balcony.
  • The reason for this is because Efron’s natural voice was too low for that of a tenor and the producers wanted a tenor to match the role.

Efron did, however, do all of his own singing in the sequels, as all the music in those films had been tailored specifically for his voice. Corbin Bleu came up with the slogans that appear on the shirts that he wears in the movie. Ashley Tisdale originally auditioned for the role of Gabriella Montez, but director Kenny Ortega thought she would do better in the role of Sharpay Evans.

  1. Matthew Underwood from Zoey 101 (2005) was offered the role of Troy Bolton, but because of his contract with Nickelodeon, he was forced to decline the role.
  2. It took 24 days to film this movie.
  3. The cell phone ring that gives the class detention has the tune of the song “Start of Something New.” A duet between Coach Bolton and Ms.

Darbus was planned but never filmed. On January 20, 2016, the original cast came together to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the release of the movie. However, Zac Efron was busy promoting his film Dirty Grandpa (2016) and was unable to attend. His only appearance was a prerecorded message in which he stated which scene from the franchise was his favorite (the scene was “We’re All In This Together”).

  • In Corbin Bleu ‘s first appearance at the school, he was wearing three different watches.
  • He was given a choice of which one he wanted to wear, so he chose all three of them.
  • Each was set to different time zones.
  • According to Corbin Bleu, whenever the principal cast members get together, they always discuss doing a High School Musical reunion.

Bleu has said, “the question isn’t if we’re going to do one, the question is when we’re going to do one.” “High School Musical” was the working title for the film while producers brainstormed a better name. However, by the time of post-production, there were no better options, and so the producers unwillingly settled for “High School Musical.” Corbin Bleu originally intended to audition for Ryan Evans, but when he saw Lucas Grabeel dancing at the audition, Corbin said that he couldn’t shake like Lucas, and Ryan had to shake when dancing.

  1. Instead, he auditioned for Chad and won the role.
  2. In the beginning scene, the room where Troy and his dad played basketball was actually a room in the school where they shot most of the movie.
  3. It was actually a dance studio, but they covered the mirrors.
  4. You can see ballet barres in the back.
  5. One of the players playing for the Wildcats in the championship game wore a jersey with the word “extra” on the back.

Michael Jackson called Zac Efron to tell him he enjoyed his work in High School Musical. Efron says he was completely flabbergasted and actually broke out in tears during the call. The soundtrack was recorded in five days. Over 600 teen actors auditioned for this movie.

  1. Zac Efron had to undergo three hours of basketball practice every day because his character was the captain of the basketball team.
  2. The film has its origins in a 1999 script entitled “Grease 3.” Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake were to star as the children of Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson from the 1978 film.

The plot was virtually the same as that High School Musical, but with more similarities to Grease (1978). The character who would become Sharpay was to be the daughter of Betty Rizzo (producers tried to get Christina Aguilera for the part, but she declined).

  1. Timberlake’s band mates from *NSYNC were to have supporting roles, with John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John allegedly approached for cameo roles.
  2. Before the script went through a second rewrite, the project was shelved until 2004.
  3. Producers would have needed permission from those who owned the rights to Grease, and so the idea evolved into High School Musical.

This was the Disney Channel’s most successful movie at its time with 7.7 million viewers in the premiere broadcast. The Cheetah Girls 2 (2006) broke this record with 8.3 million viewers on its premiere night. High School Musical 2 now stands as the highest rated Disney Channel original movie premiere with more than 17.2 million viewers.

The school’s mascot was originally going to be a leopard (which, in real life, is the mascot of East High School in Salt Lake City, where the movie was filmed), but it was changed to a wildcat, possibly to fictionalize the the school slightly further. However, the logo was left intact. The championship trophy held by Troy at the end was made in 1936.

The rooftop scene had to be cut short since a real thunderstorm was headed toward the school. Many of the items in the rooftop garden scene were placed there by a crane. After filming was completed, some of the teachers wanted the garden to remain on the rooftop.

Lucas Grabeel had knee problems while filming, and was wearing a knee brace in “Bop to the Top.” The cast had to undergo two weeks of intense dance rehearsals before filming began on the movie. At the second callback, Lucas Grabeel and Ashley Tisdale auditioned together and their Sharpay-Ryan dynamic was quickly established.

Grabeel claimed that Tisdale, in a Sharpay-like manner, gave him unsolicited direction in the audition. It was rumored that the two actors did not get along in the first film. The audition experience may have been the cause. At the time Monique Coleman was called back to play Taylor McKessie, she had nearly quit acting.

  1. Even after being offered the part, she reluctantly accepted.
  2. Of the six main cast members, Corbin Bleu was the youngest (17 at the time of the film’s release) and Monique Coleman was the oldest (25 at the film’s release).
  3. Vanessa Hudgens had to compete with 12 other girls for the role of Gabriella Montez during the callbacks for this movie.

She and the other girls danced and sang all day to determine who would play Gabriella Montez. Gabriella sings the only solo in this movie. One of the first films to be offered for sale at the iTunes Store. Ashley Tisdale came up with the idea for her scene kicking the bathroom doors.

The moon that was seen on stage while Troy and Gabriella are singing “Breaking Free” was left behind on stage after the film was completed. There are several noticeable attempts to set Troy and Gabriella apart from the people around them by placing them both in blue outfits. One strong example is the shot of Troy, the Wildcats, and the cheering fans seen out the window immediately before Gabriella sings “When There Was Me and You.” At this point, Troy essentially looks like a blue spot in a sea of red.

Some of the items on Gabriella’s tray were glued to the tray. During one of the lunchroom scenes, a large spotlight was accidentally dropped off an upper two story balcony, almost hitting some of the film crew below. Filming in a real high school, East High in Salt Lake City, created some challenges and they were only able to use certain parts of the school at certain times because class was in session.

The milk cartons seen in the movie did not contain milk. They contained lemon-lime juice because milk spoils if it is not refrigerated. Naya Rivera auditioned for Gabriella Montez. She later went on to star on the similar Glee (2009). In its first week of release, the soundtrack to High School Musical debuted at #143 on the Billboard Top 200 and sold 6,500 copies.

It went on to sell 4.1 million copies, making it the best-selling album in America in 2006. A decade after the movie first aired, Lucas Grabeel and Ashley Tisdale admitted in an interview that they were not close friends at the time of filming and had difficulty working together until they actually got to know each other and developed a friendship.

Disney Channel executives and producers originally wanted Cassie Steele to play Gabriella after seeing her in another Disney Channel original movie, Full-Court Miracle (2003). She auditioned several times and had a screen test, and was cast as Gabriella. However, the fifth season of her television show, Degrassi: The Next Generation (2001), seriously conflicted with the filming of this movie, causing Steele to drop out.

The final callback for Taylor came down to Monique Coleman and two Asian-American actresses. She feared she wouldn’t get the role because of her hair. Coleman claimed it resembled Corbin Bleu ‘s hair; she thought they looked too much like siblings. Vanessa Hudgens said that her favorite scene in the movie was the final scene where the entire cast sang and danced to “We’re All in this Together”.

The auditorium was located at another school because the one at the school where they did the majority of filming was being renovated. Kelsi’s fall had to be shot many times because the paper would either stick together or fly off stage. In the two weeks following the first presentation of this movie on the Disney Channel, at least 8 tracks from the movie appeared on the Billboard Hot 100, the most simultaneous songs ever from one album at that point in time.

In addition, many other Hot 100 chart records were set or broken. These include:

First debut artist to have 2 Hot 100 singles in the same week: Zac Efron, (Tied the next week by both Lucas Grabeel & Ashley Tisdale,)First artist to debut with 4 Hot 100 singles in two weeks: Zac Efron. (Zac’s 5 concurrent songs in the Hot 100 were the most by any artist since the Beatles held 14 positions in 1964.)

In the championship game if you look at the scoreboard at the end of the game, you can see that Troy was the last person to foul and had received 3 fouls in the game. Hunter Parrish auditioned for the role of Troy Bolton. He and Zac Efron went on to work together in 17 Again (2009).

When Ms. Darbus is arguing with Coach Bolton in the locker room, he says “good luck on Broadway” as she storms out. Alyson Reed is a Broadway veteran. Corbin Bleu admitted that he was actually terrible at basketball. He stated in the same interview that Zac Efron came in with actual skill at the sport. Sharpay Evans is left handed.

High School Musical 2 Is The Greatest Movie of All Time

Julian Nott had hoped to write the music for the film, but he was replaced before he had begun the scoring process. Some promotional posters still say “Music by Julian Nott.” Monique Coleman was the one who suggested to stylists that they incorporate headbands into the character of Taylor McKessie and make it a part of who she is because they didn’t have time to fix her hair in time for filming, since they had done it very poorly in the front.

  • Zac Efron admits he was living in a tiny efficiency when he made these movies.
  • He also admits he had no formal training of any type; he was just winging it.
  • Joey Miyashima who plays the principal for East High also played the Palos Verdes girl’s basketball coach in another Disney’s Double Teamed (2002).

Jason’s surname is Cross. Lucas Grabeel revealed in 2021 that Ryan had a crush on Zeke, although many of the scenes from the franchise that implied this ended up getting cut. This Movie was made in partnership between Disney and General Mills. High School Musical owes its existence to the Disney Channel series Even Stevens (2000), specifically the 2002 episode, “Influenza: The Musical”.

That was the first musical anything that Disney Channel had ever done and the execs were unsure a musical episode of a sitcom could work. Because of the episode’s success, the channel began incorporating more music into its original series and movies. Later, when one of the producers of Even Stevens ran into Disney Channel President Gary Marsh in a studio lot in Hollywood and congratulated him on the recent success of High School Musical, Marsh told the producer that High School Musical would have never been made had he not done the musical episode of Even Stevens.

Gabriella wears the same pair of shoes in every high school scene (not including the red high heels she wears during “All In This Together”). Producer Don Schain spent most of his career producing and directing low budget R-rated exploitation films featuring nudity, sex and violence in the 70s and 80s before becoming a producer for the Disney Channel and this movie.
