Is Big appropriate for 10 year olds?

Big Movie Review The parents’ guide to what’s in this movie. Products & Purchases Not present Drinking, Drugs & Smoking Parents need to know that of if Big were released today, it would almost certainly earn a PG-13 rating. There’s some strong language (including one use of “f-k”) and some sexual situations (including a man fondling a woman’s breast).

  • There’s also some drinking, smoking, and mild violence.
  • A child forced to grow up too quickly is exposed to corporate life, sex, and other adult matters.
  • October 30, 2022 Why does there need to be an implied sex scene between the adult and the adult whom we know is actually a child.
  • In fact that adult is someone we have grown to care about and trust in the movie and continue to trust and see as good by the end.

Do we not see how confusing this is for children or young teens who are watching this film? I’m sorry, but this is a completely inappropriate film, although funny and with actors we know and love. If this was truly a film for kids ( even teens), then please spare us the sexual and implied content between the adult and the child.

I actually find this beloved film quite disturbing. Yet another 80s family movie with some inappropriate adult content slipped in but defended because it’s a classic.4 people found this helpful. February 3, 2023 Disney+ has it rated as PG, while that doesn’t mean no cussing there is a use of the F-word and scenes that I would consider borderline pushing the PG boundary.

This title has: 2 people found this helpful. Fed up with being little, 12-year-old Josh Baskin makes a wish to be BIG at a fair’s mechanical swami booth and wakes the following morning in a grown man’s body. Mortified at what he’s done, he flees across the bridge to New York City with his friend Billy to track down the fair and wish himself back to normal.

In New York, Josh () stumbles into a computer operator job at MacMillan Toys. His insightfulness gets him promoted overnight and draws the attention of an uptight female executive (). As their relationship develops, Josh begins to mature and settle into his adult skin. It takes Billy, and thoughts of his mother, who thinks her son has been kidnapped, to give Josh the courage to approach the mechanical Zoltar booth again and whisper, “I wish I was small.'” This movie is surprisingly heartwarming and humorous.

There aren’t very many funny movies about people who get magically transplanted into somebody else’s body; the premise is a stale one by now, having shouldered more beatings under Hollywood’s bullwhip than the proverbial dead horse. Prelude to a Kiss is one exception.

  • Another is Big,
  • Both do something intelligent and inventive with that premise, and both are grounded by strong, earnest performances that make the incredible seem credible.
  • Tom Hanks, who would go on a few years later to win back-to-back Oscars for (1993) and (1994), delivers such a performance here.

The scene in which he spends a night alone in a seedy New York motel, fidgeting until he breaks into tears, makes his situation gut-wrenchingly believable. He’s not merely imitating the mannerisms of an awkward 12-year-old. There’s a profound innocence about him – that innocence makes him both vulnerable and irresistibly charming.

There are other fine performances here as well. David Moscow, playing the young Josh Baskin, is a terrific counterpart for Hanks. Jared Rushton adds a shake of pepper to the role of his friend Billy, and Elizabeth Perkins looks appropriately bewildered by it all as the reluctant love interest. directs with an uncharacteristically subdued hand, employing no camera tricks or overblown music here.

She lets the performers and the sharp script do the speaking, and gives us something larger than comedy. She gives us something to think about.

Families can talk about Josh’s experiences as an adult in Big, Why does he want to be big, and why does he ultimately decide he wants to be small? If you could be any age, which age would you pick? Why? What are the best things about being a kid? What are the advantages to being an adult? How do the characters in Big demonstrate and ? Why are these important ?

What does PG-13 mean?

Learn what movie ratings mean and how to use them to choose movies for your children. You may be surprised to find out that the movie ratings given to current movies were originally designed by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) back in 1968.

  • The current rating system we use was created in response to a previous self-censorship system that was created in 1922, known as the Hays Code, when the MPAA was founded and led by William Hays.
  • The Hays Code was developed to ensure the absence of “offensive material” and prevent government interference in filmmaking.

The current rating system we have in the United States is voluntary and requires a fee for having material go through the rating process. The rating process is handled by the Classifications and Ratings Administration (CARA) by a rating board that is made up of a group of independent parents that is charged with giving ratings to films that “give parents clear, concise information about a films content, in order to help them determine whether a movie is suitable for their children,” according to a CARA brochure During the rating process, the rating board considers things like language, sex, violence, drug use and other situations that might concern most parents.

  • The ratings board tries to reflect what they think the majority of other parents would give the film in ratings.
  • Ratings are not designed to indicate that films are appropriate or inappropriate, they are simply a way of saying what kind of content is included in the movie to give parents a chance to make informed decisions on what they are allowing their children to watch.

When you are looking at ratings, look at the three parts included in a rating.

The rating letter (G, PG, PG-13, R or NC-17)—this indicates the level of content. The rating definition—this is generally included in the lower box of the rating itself and gives a more detailed explanation of what that rating means. Some statements may include, “Some Material May Be Inappropriate for Children Under 13” or “Some Material May Not Be Suitable for Children.” The rating descriptors—these are usually put to the right of the rating letter. This is always unique to each film, but gives more details about why the film received a certain rating. Some statements may include “Extended sequences of intense fantasy action violence, and frightening images” or “For sequences of strong violence, language throughout, and some sexuality/nudity” or “Mild language and some crude humor.”

What do the movie ratings mean? Take a look below at the information offered from CARA, G: General Audiences, All Ages Admitted. Contains nothing in theme, language, nudity, sex, violence or other matters that the in-view of the Rating Board would offend parents whose younger children view the motion picture.

It’s important to note that a “G” rating does not automatically make the movie a children’s movie or is an approval of the movie for children. PG: Parental Guidance Suggested, Some Material May Not Be Suitable for Children. The film should be investigated further by parents. There may be some content such as language, violence or brief nudity, but they aren’t so intense that more than guidance is suggested.

Remember, the content will vary with each movie, so check the specific movie rating for the film you are researching. PG-13: Parents Strongly Cautioned, Some Material May Be Inappropriate for Children Under 13. This rating is a stronger caution for parents that content included may not be appropriate for children under 13 (pre-teen ages).

This may include stronger language, extended violence or sexual situations and drug-use. Remember, the content will vary with each movie, so check the specific movie rating for the film you are researching. R: Restricted, Children Under 17 Require Accompanying Parent or Adult Guardian. This rating means the film contains adult material such as adult activity, harsh language, intense graphic violence, drug abuse and nudity.

Most theaters have their own policies regarding R rated movies and some include checking IDs of those who look under 17 purchasing tickets, allowing only parents to purchase tickets and accompany those under 17 into the movie, or just stating it has to be an adult guardian (not necessarily a parent) and that guardian has to purchase the tickets and accompany under 17 ages the entire time.

  1. Check with your theater on the policies and other parents about what you will allow your children to watch.
  2. NC-17: No One 17 and Under Admitted.
  3. These films are too adult for children.
  4. The rating doesn’t mean that they are obscene or pornographic, but that the content is only appropriate for adult audiences.

Michigan State University Extension suggests doing the following when you are reviewing movie ratings.

Review movie ratings critically. Start with the movie rating, but look at all parts of the rating. Look at the definitions and descriptions. Use these ratings as a guideline for your family movie viewing. Communicate your expectations. Once you’ve decided as a family what ratings are acceptable, talk about that with your children, their friends and other adults they might watch movies with so everyone knows what is allowed when it comes to ratings. Talk about the movie. It helps kids to process what they’ve just seen if they can talk about it with a trusted adult. Talk about the positive content that you want to give as examples to your kids. Talk about the negative content and how it conflicts with what your family believes or values. Watch the content first. Just like using technology or apps, it’s important for parents to view movies before their children see them, especially when watching PG or PG-13 movies. Watching the movie before your child allows you to see firsthand what content is included and helps you develop a plan for how to talk about it with your child. Be open. Many kids will watch movies their parents don’t want them seeing; however, it’s important to encourage kids to talk to you about what they are watching so you can help them process the content they have seen and answer questions for them. Check out viewer reviews. Sometimes the actual movie rating doesn’t give a complete picture. Many movies will have viewer reviews that you can read online that give more details about content and what’s included in the movie.

Why is Con Air an 18?

Con Air Movie Review The parents’ guide to what’s in this movie. Positive Messages Not present Sex, Romance & Nudity Not present Products & Purchases Not present Drinking, Drugs & Smoking Parents need to know that one character, a convicted rapist, threatens to rape a female guard and later attempts it.

The film implies that a mass murderer killed a little girl (later, we find out he didn’t). Characters graphically describe murders and rapes they have committed; many kill again, on screen and gruesomely. September 30, 2020 This title has: January 27, 2017 If all movies gave the message that women need to be saved it would be one thing.

But, while many movies do give that message, many other movies don’t. It appears that “Con Air” was written and produced by men who have traditional ideas of the roles of men and women. A great opportunity for discussion of how some people cling to such notions even as so many others have gone away from them.

  1. The senselessness of the violence makes this a movie for 17 and up only.
  2. On the flip side, the good guys and the bad guys are clearly defined, and the parolee has learned from his mistakes, has changed his behavior and is as loyal to his friends as Fred Flintstone.
  3. Cameron Poe (Nicolas Cage) goes to prison for killing a man during a light-night brawl outside the bar where his pregnant wife works.

When Poe gets paroled seven years later, his plane is hijacked by criminally insane mastermind Cyrus the Virus (John Malkovich) and black separatist Diamond Dog (Ving Rhames). It’s up to Poe to save the day. There’s no moral to the story of CON AIR, and while the acting is great (Dave Chapelle plays a particularly gregarious felon), there’s nothing to sink your teeth into.

But that will be fine for most teens. This is typical blockbuster fare: The good guys and bad guys are clear from the beginning. Poe is a stand-up guy loyal to his good friend Baby-O (Mykelti Williamson) and the honor of guard Sally Bishop (Rachel Ticotin). The bad guys are everywhere and seem to have no end of devious plans.

There are car crashes, massive explosions, pithy one-liners (“Why couldn’t you put the bunny back in the box?” Poe deadpans after impaling a convict in the cargo hold), even a dead body flying onto the roof of an unsuspecting Volvo. Con Air delivers the goods with good-natured jokes and oddly non-threatening psychopaths (Steve Bushemi plays a creepy serial killer who psychoanalyzes his fellow convicts and has a disturbing tea party with a little girl in a trailer park).

But if Con Air is a typical blockbuster, then it suffers from the typical potholes of the genre. Poe supposedly goes to jail for killing a man to defend his wife’s honor, and he continues the theme by protecting and saving guard Bishop. While standing up for women is admirable, it sends the wrong message to both boys and girls who watch that women need to be saved.

One could argue, rather, that Poe went to jail to defend his masculinity, not his bride – a worthy topic for families to discuss after viewing. The film also suffers from too much blood. People are tortured and killed with zeal, and no one seems to suffer a poor conscience after the murders.

Families can talk about why movies like Con Air make murder seem so easy. Why don’t any of the characters seem affected by the murders they’ve just committed? Families may also want to discuss why the film depicts the felons as dangerous but also loveable. Families may also want to discuss Poe’s heroics. Do women need to be saved? How do men in your family show they love women? Did Poe defend his wife’s honor by fighting those men, or was he really defending his masculinity?
