Is it illegal to unlock an iPad?
Is it Illegal to Jailbreak or Unlock Your Cell Phone? Jailbreaking is not currently illegal on most devices, but using illegal applications and software through jailbreaking certainly is. This procedure is legal only because the DMCA does not cover the process specifically.
However, jailbreaking is currently illegal on the iPad. The reason the iPad is off-limits is because of the ambiguous terminology of the word “tablet.” A portable video game console (like the GameBoy) could be referred to as a tablet as easily as an e-reader or Kindle. By allowing jailbreaking on those devices, protections for gaming consoles could potentially erode.
Unlawful unlocking can have consequences. Service carriers are allowed to unlock your device, but an unapproved third party or self-service is considered unlawful. Fines for unlocking a device without consent can be steep. Civil suits filed against an unlocked phone can result in a fine of up to $2,500.

I restored my old iPad before I sold it, but it still shows up in find my iPad, but it cannot be located. Is find my iPad still on it? iPad 2, iOS 4, White 16GB WiFi Posted on Mar 20, 2011 2:42 PM 7 replies Mar 20, 2011 2:48 PM in response to adcx64 No, restoring it to factory defaults removes it.
If you restored from backup though it is still on there, along with all of your other information. Aug 18, 2011 7:12 AM in response to deggie Hi Deggie, it doesn’t seem very wise from apple. if stollen, i’Il expect the first thing a thief would do is to restore the iPad back to its factory defauts, and then, what good is the findmyiPad for? Do you know if other security apps such as gadgettrak still may track your iPads (or iPhone, macbooks etc.) after OS restoring? Aug 18, 2011 7:18 AM in response to wmduarte Do you know if other security apps such as gadgettrak still may track your iPads (or iPhone, macbooks etc.) after OS restoring? That wouldn’t be possible with an app.
If restored as new, the deivce is wiped completely and restored to ‘factory fresh’, thus there are no apps on it. That function would have to be built into the iOS. Find my iPhone is very handy but like most things, it is not perfect. It is better than nothing though.
Aug 18, 2011 8:43 AM in response to paulcb Hi paulcb, although apps are wiped during the restore process, the serial number, m.a.c. addresses, and other hardware-related identifications remain. and as any iPad (or iPhone) regularly logs into Apple’s servers I’ve just assumed it’d be possible to restore the findmyipad functions to its ” locatable ” state automatically.
Well. just an idea from whom lost an iPad last Saterday 😟. Aug 18, 2011 8:50 AM in response to wmduarte I agree with you that it’s possible but as I said earlier, it can’t be done with a 3rd party app or even an Apple feature that’s not part of the basic iOS, i.e.
it must be built into the iOS so it can’t be wiped. Bummer that you lost your iPad. Perhaps the credit card you purchased it with covers loss? Aug 18, 2011 10:47 AM in response to paulcb About the insurance, that’s to whole point of my desapointment. I was offered to buy insurance at the time of purchase but instead, I bought gadgetrak maybe naively assuming that gadgettrak and MobileMe could help me finding the iPad in the case it was lost or stolen.
So far, not a trace of my iPad. Anyway, super thks for the idea, I’ll check with my credit card Aug 18, 2011 10:53 AM in response to wmduarte FWIW, you were probably offered to buy AppleCare which extends your 1 year warranty an additional year for a total of 2 years.
