How long does it take to get 320 on the GRE?

Make your own plan – The study plan you just read about is very different from the ones you will find elsewhere on the internet. One major difference is that instead of telling you what to do each day and from which resource, I have simply broken down the preparation time into days and mentioned the resources you can use. Stay calm. Get a good sleep the night before the exam. Remember that you have been preparing for this day since last one month and there’s nothing that can stop you from getting a good score now. There’s cold in some of the centers so make sure you are dressed in layers, in case something like that happens.

  • Take a snack for you to eat during the break.
  • Some people prefer to stay at their seats even during the breaks.
  • This is not recommended.
  • It’s better to get up and move around, it will clear your head.
  • Do not let your performance in one section have an impact on the other.
  • For example, if your writing section didn’t go well, it’s useless to keep thinking about it.

You won’t be able to perform well on the other sections if you don’t get your mind off it. Remember that the scores on each of the sections are independent. Moreover, the test is section-adaptive so let’s say, you were not able to do well on your first Verbal section, it means that the second Verbal section will be easier and you will be able to perform well in that.

The scores will then be adjusted according to the difficulty level of the sections, so it’s not as bad as you think it is. All the best for your preparation and the exam. I used the Magoosh GRE Vocabulary app for learning new words. The app combines the flashcard concept with a scientifically tested learning approach (Learning, Reviewing, Mastered).

But it felt a lot like mugging up and that’s why I decided to add more elements to the process. I describe each of those techniques below. Most of the words we come across are made from Latin and Greek roots. If you read ‘Word Power Made Easy’, you would get familiar with many such root words,

  • So, when you come across a new word and you recognize the roots, you can guess the meaning of that word.
  • For example, the word ‘ misogynist ‘ is made from two Greek roots, ‘ miso ‘ — hatred and ‘ gyne ‘ — woman.
  • So you can guess that the word ‘ misogynist ‘ is used for someone who hates women.
  • Another technique to remember the meanings of words is to associate them with people and incidents.

For instance, I associate the word ‘frugal’ with my father because he spends money wisely. So any time I come across that word, I can easily recall the meaning. Let’s look at another example. Whenever I come across the word ‘ schadenfreude ‘, I am reminded of an Indian TV serial in which some character gets pleasure from another’s misfortune.

  1. The third technique and the most effective of all techniques is mnemonics,
  2. Remember ‘My Very Educated Mother Just Showed Us Nine Planets’ from primary school? It’s a mnemonic to remember the names and the order of planets.
  3. Likewise, we can have mnemonics for meanings of words too.
  4. Break up the word or its pronunciation into parts that you can use to make a story.

For example, what is the first thing that comes to your mind when you read the word ‘ dogmatic ‘? A dog. You can never straighten a dog’s tail. Even if you try, it will keep on curling back. Similarly, a dogmatic person is someone whose opinions cannot be changed.

Lastly, let’s talk about what I call the synonym approach, Whenever I came across a new word in the wordlist, after reading the meaning and example sentence, I would look up that word on Google (search ‘define ‘) and WordWeb, It is very helpful since you find other popular definitions of that word along with a list of synonyms (and antonyms).

There is a good chance that you are familiar with one of the synonym words and it may help you remember the actual word. And who knows, you might even get the same synonym pair in a TC or SE question. Thereafter, I would use any of the three techniques — root words, association or mnemonics — to memorize the meaning.

There are three websites which will be very useful to you in this process. First is Vocabulary.com, Unlike any traditional dictionary, this website gives you a friendly explanation that you will actually remember. And second is Mnemonic Dictionary, where you will find mnemonics for most of the GRE words.

However, I suggest you use this website only in cases when you are not able to come up with a mnemonic on your own. The third one is Quizlet which helps you make your own set of flashcards and assess yourself based on that study set. Bonus Tip Learning a new word on the Magoosh app and then looking it up on multiple websites can take a lot of time and sometimes feel tedious.

WordWeb app provides an option to add web references in the navigation panel. ( Update: Turns out the app’s UI was revamped in a recent update and they moved References under X-ref in app options.) I used it to add Google, Vocabulary, Mnemonic Dictionary, Etymonline as references. So, every time I wanted to look up a word, I only had to go to WordWeb.

The University’s Perspective – Good GRE Score – Remember we said that you must take your target universities/ field into consideration before determining your target GRE score? Well, the good news is that most universities publish the average scores of their incoming class on their website every year.

  1. You can leverage this information to analyze what range you would want to target.
  2. Another important aspect that you should keep in mind is the percentile approach of universities.
  3. Being a competitive exam, the score alone is not an indicator of your performance.
  4. It is the comparison with other test takers that determines your eligibility.

To bring things into perspective, the 80 th percentile is considered to be a good score by the top 30 U.S. universities. Important: While an 80 th percentile can put you in a place where your application can be considered for admission, it is not the only parameter. How Long Does It Take For Gre Scores To Reach University Here are some good scores for particular fields to give you an idea about the score you should aim depending upon the field you wish to pursue. Analytical Writing: The analytical writing score is calculated separately from the quants and verbal section and the maximum score can be 6.

A minimum score of 4 can be considered as a good enough score in analytical writing. MBA: Are you planning to pursue your MBA abroad ? Different B schools accept different GRE scores. However, to get admission into top B schools in the US, you need to score a minimum of 320. However, for anyone aspiring to take admission to Ivy League colleges, a score of minimum 330 should be good enough.

MS: A total score of 325 and above should help you to get admission into the topmost colleges. However, even a score above 300 is good enough for MS. Nursing: A score ranging between 305 and 316 can be considered a good GRE score for anyone who wants to take admission in nursing.

Engineering: Universities will pay more attention to your Quants score as compared to your Verbal scores. If you wish to pursue an Engineering degree, aiming for at least 160 on the Quants section should be good enough. However, if you aim to take admission to the topmost colleges, you need to aim for at least 166.

Ph.D.: Again, this depends on a lot of factors. But, a score of around 310 should be good enough for taking admission into a PhD course. To Get A Scholarship: Getting a scholarship does not solely depend upon your GRE scores. However, good GRE scores will surely help. How Long Does It Take For Gre Scores To Reach University In the images, we have depicted the minimum and maximum GRE score ranges for particular fields. For example, if you wish to appear GRE for MBA the minimum and maximum Quants score that you need is 152 and 165 respectively. Similarly, for MBA, the minimum and maximum Verbal score required is 152 and 165 respectively. How Long Does It Take For Gre Scores To Reach University Another important aspect that you should keep in mind is the percentile approach of universities. The percentile is a concept that determines what percent of all GRE test takers did you score better than. So, if your score falls in the 25th percentile, it means that you scored better than 25% of all test takers.

A score of 150 on verbal and 152.6 on Quants is considered as the average score or 50th percentile score. The average score for the analytical writing section is 3.5. The Quant scores generally tend to be higher than the Verbal scores. For example, a score of 165 is 96th percentile for verbal whereas, this same score is 89th percentile for quants.

So, anything that is above the average of the 50th percentile can be considered as a better than average score. However, to get a ‘good’ score, you can aim for at least the 75th percentile. Being a competitive exam, the score alone is not an indicator of your performance.

It is the comparison with other test takers that determines your eligibility. To bring things into perspective, the 80 th percentile is an accepted score by the top 30 U.S. universities. Important: While an 80 th percentile can put you in a place where your application can be considered for admission, it is not the only parameter.

You can use the table below to get an idea of what percentile your score lies in:

Is 130 the lowest GRE score?

GRE Score Calculator – The GRE score can be roughly calculated on the basis of the questions you’ve gotten right. This is also known as your raw score. The Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning consists of 40 questions each. So, the highest raw score would be 40, provided you get every single question right.

These raw scores are then converted, or scaled, to the score range of 130 to 170, the former being the lowest and the latter being the section-wise GRE highest score. The conversion takes place on the basis of the difficulty rate of each question. Since the GRE is an adaptive test, the difficulty level increases with each section.

Is it easy to get 330 in GRE?

How Hard can a 330+ GRE Score be? – One should always remember that the GRE is a standardized test, which means it has predictable aspects. The trick is to understand the test as well as you can and prepare specifically for the GRE from mock tests, study plans, and preparation strategies.

However, it is also important to remember that a 330+ score is in the 98th percentile of all GRE scores. This means that only 2% of the test takers can achieve this score and over 98% of people are below this score. It can be as difficult to increase your score from 320 to 330 as it is to score 320 in the first place.
