How Does Technology Affect Education Negatively?
Waffa Qurbani [email protected] Ontario Tech University This chapter analyzes the negative impact on students when using technology in higher education classrooms. In addition to this, it looks at how educators can balance the use of technology in higher education classrooms to avoid these impacts, and the implications they can make in the curriculum to promote healthy use of technology.
- This paper will focus on highlighting the cons of technology use in the classroom.
- According to research, there has been an increase in mental health issues amongst students which has led to anxiety, depression, and challenges with learning, which are associated with their use of technology (Lynch, 2018).
Using technology for academic purposes is a major distraction for students, making it hard for them to multitask. According to research, students are not the only ones who feel a sense of stress or anxiety when having to learn to use technology in the classroom.
During the pandemic, “many instructors experienced stress when learning new technology and having to work extra hours” (Sharaievska et al., 2022). Teaching students how to use technology efficiently is an integral role of every educator, however, educators need to lead by example when it comes to using technology within the classroom.
They should avoid excessive use of technology within the classroom when students are working individually, especially for the use of email or even instant messaging a colleague. With technology offering many benefits to educators and students experience of learning, helping students find a medium between a healthy usage of technology compared to the negative impacts it may cause is extremely essential.

What are the negative effects of gadgets to students academic performance?
Introduction – Around the world, people are increasing their reliance on technology devices at a rate that has never been seen before.1 Not only adults but also children are excessively immersed in electronic gadgets in today’s times, which generates issues and worries regarding the effects these devices have on children in terms of their physical and cognitive development.2 3 Regarding the situation in Asia, a prior study that was carried out in six Asian nations concluded that children aged from 12 to 18 years held ownership of smartphones at a rate of 62% overall.3 Numerous developments have taken place in the public sphere of the modern period, leading to an explosion of new forms of data transmission, social interaction and leisure time activities.
- As technology continues to grow on a global scale, it is nearly impossible to live without any digital screen.4 Technological progress brings about inevitable lifestyle changes, particularly in children.
- These changes include the habit of playing with gadgets, eating habits, physical activity levels and the impacts of these changes.5 There are identified benefits of digital device use, such as helping children acquire new vocabulary, languages and stay engaged in the classroom.6 However, the possible negative impact of digital device use and its problematic usage is also common.
A study has shown that digital addiction has a detrimental effect on students’ performance in the classroom.7 Children who spend an excessive amount of time in front of screens may have decreased levels of productivity.3 Above-mentioned studies indicate that there are a variety of advantages as well as drawbacks associated with the use of the various forms of the digital screen.
A cognitive function is any psychological process that is involved in the process of acquiring knowledge, the manipulation of information or the logical derivation of conclusions.8 The capabilities of perceiving, remembering, learning, paying attention, deliberating and communicating are all included in the cognitive processes.8 People who use digital screens for prolonged periods have been reported to have impaired cognitive regulation and cognitive inflexibility.9 According to the findings of another study, digital addiction is connected with an increased number of reported cognitive failures.10 School age is a time of rapid physical and mental growth for children.11 There are increasing concerns about the effects of children’s excessive screen usage on their growth and development.12 According to the results of a survey, around two-thirds of students use the digital screen while they should be paying attention in class, studying or completing assignments.7 The distraction that is resulted from this multitasking is one of the factors that has been proven to have a negative impact on students’ academic performance.7 There are limited evidences of digital addiction among children and its correlates in this geographic area.
Therefore, this cross-sectional study was carried out to determine the extent of media use, and its association with cognitive function among school-going children in the study region.

Cons: Technology can create social disconnection and development – The bad news is that the overuse of screen time displaces time spent engaging in real life social interactions. We know that children develop communication, cognitive, and social skills through their relationships with caregivers and other adults and peers.
- They require face-to-face engagement to understand and use verbal and non-verbal communication, develop empathy, learn turn-taking, and more.
- Increased technology use has the potential to create social disconnection for young and older children alike, which can negatively impact the development of social and relational skills.
Recent research has shown that screen time is negatively associated with social skills development in toddlers. Specifically, the more time they spend with devices the more their social development suffers in the areas of relating and interacting with others and compliance with directions and ability to help others.
- Levels of disruptive social behaviors, such as being bossy or bullying, increased with more screen time activity.
- The concerns about social disconnection extend to older children and teens as well.
- As time spent on devices increases, time spent in-person with peers and adults decreases.
- This can lead to a sense of isolation and loneliness, with studies showing that teens who report the least in-person interaction and the most screen time have the highest rates of loneliness and depression.
A study involving older children showed that spending one week at summer camp without screen time led to a significant improvement in children’s ability to read and understand non-verbal emotional cues. This demonstrates the negative impact that screen time can have on the development of these critical social skills, but also highlights that these skills can improve in a relatively short amount of time (at least for older children) when device use is decreased and in-person social interaction is increased.
- An additional concern regarding social development and overuse of screen time is the decrease in positive family interaction that occurs.
- Studies have shown that increased use of devices leads to reduced quality time among family members, and increased parent-child conflicts.
- Children and their use of devices play a role, but so do the device habits of parents.
When parent use of devices infringes on quality engagement with children, their social development suffers. Parents need to be mindful of their own device habits, as well as the amount of time they allow their children, in order to support healthy social development.

What are 3 negative impacts of technology on the environment?
Environmental Issues | Being Green | Reducing Waste Sometimes we get so lost in the excitement of developing and using new technologies that we don’t thoroughly examine their effect on the world around us. Many of the technologies we use every day consume a lot more resources and power than they need to, and using and manufacturing them can create a mess. Here are a few of the ways that technology can harm the environment:
Pollution – Air, water, heat and noise pollution can all be caused by producing and using technology Consuming resources – Non-renewable resources, including precious metals like gold, are used to make technology. Many others, such as coal, are consumed to generate the electricity to use technology. Even some renewable resources, like trees and water, are becoming contaminated or are used up faster than they can renew themselves because of technology. Waste – Manufacturing technology creates large amounts of waste, and used computers and electronics get thrown out when they break or become outdated. Called ” technotrash,” these electronics contain all sorts of hazardous materials that are very unsafe for the environment. They need to be disposed of using special methods. Disrupting ecology – Clearing land where animals used to live to build factories and allowing pollution to contaminate the food chain can greatly affect the environment’s natural cycles. Health hazards – Using toxic materials that can harm our health can cause cancer, and technology addiction can lead to other health problems like obesity and carpal tunnel syndrome.
You can encourage manufacturers by choosing to buy more energy-efficient and less hazardous electronics and by supporting companies that make protecting the environment a priority. You can also do your own part to reduce environmental impact by not being wasteful and disposing of your electronics safely and properly. Carbon emissions, mostly carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, are greenhouse gasses that are produced by people. Greenhouse gasses are gasses in the atmosphere that trap and reflect heat and radiation back to the planet’s surface. It is believed that over the last century, the amount of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere has increased due to carbon emissions, and that they are contributing to global warming,
Carbon emissions get released into the atmosphere from things like cars, air planes, power plants and factories. They also get released by people like you, when you use a vehicle or electricity created from burning fossil fuels. The computer you’re using to read this is using electricity, and so is your mobile device and video game system.
We’re all guilty of enjoying things that aren’t exactly eco-friendly, but if we’re smarter about how we use technology, we can reduce our environmental impact, Technotrash, also called electronic waste or e-waste, is any broken or unwanted electrical or electronic device, and is currently the most rapidly-growing type of waste. If you just throw away technotrash with the regular trash, it usually ends up in a landfill,
Most electronics contain non- biodegradable materials, and heavy metals and toxic materials like cadmium, lead and mercury, Over time, these toxic materials can leak into the ground, where they can contaminate the water we drink, the plants we eat and the animals that live around the area. Many European countries have even banned technotrash from landfills.
These toxic materials can cause all kinds of bad effects including nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and even cancer. If you keep eating and drinking contaminated food and water, these toxins can build up in your body. If you eat animals that have been contaminated, you’re getting a double dose of toxins.
- What’s even worse, your body can’t properly process some of these metals and so they might take years to get out of your system.
- To help protect the environment, don’t put technotrash in with the rest of your household’s garbage.
- Check with your local recycling centers to see if they take technotrash, or enter the type of trash and your zip code at Earth911.org to look for other recycling places nearby.
You can also ship it to a company that specializes in disposing of technotrash, like GreenDisk, Before you recycle your technotrash, check out these tips: Sanitize your Hard Drive Before donating a machine, be sure to remove all of your files and data from it. Most people will just try to drag everything to the trash can or recycle bin, but this only partially erases the information! Cyber criminals can find this “deleted” information and use it however they want.
To really protect yourself, you need to run a program that ” sanitizes ” your hard drive. These programs, which can be found online, work by replacing all your data with a jumble of useless nonsense. That way, your information is safe, and your good deed goes unpunished! Consider Donating your Mobile Device There are actually a LOT of great things your old mobile devices can do for people.
Whether that means helping soldiers overseas talk to their families or helping victims of domestic violence, they can be a lot more than clutter for your junk drawer. Here is a list of several worthwhile charities. Raise Some Funds Because electronics contain precious metals including gold, silver and copper, technotrash can actually be worth a little money.
Why not hold a community fundraiser to collect and dispose of everyone’s technotrash? You’ll be helping both your community and the environment at the same time! Reuse Those Ink Cartridges Many locations that sell new printer ink cartridges will refill your old cartridge for a fraction of the cost. Each cartridge you throw away takes anywhere between 400 and 1,000 years to decompose, and on average, there are 11 cartridges thrown out every minute across the globe! Not all cartridges can be refilled, and even cartridges that you’ve filled in the past will eventually break down after continual use.
When this happens, take them to the store where you bought them and recycle them. Sometimes, the store will even give you a discount on your next ink cartridge. Just a note to our international readers: using refilled ink cartridges can cancel your printer’s warranty, so be careful. While some of the impact of computers and the Internet has unfortunately been negative, much of it has also been positive. Here’s just a few of the ways that technology is helping to improve the environment:
It helps us develop and produce new materials and technologies that are sustainable and do not harm the environment, so we can eventually stop using ones that do harm it It allow us to monitor and study our environment to better understand how it works and the impact of our actions on it It helps us create smarter technologies that respond to how we use them and adjust themselves to reduce their environmental impact, such as lights that can sense when no one is in the room and automatically turn off It allows us to have a worldwide virtual laboratory, so that experts from all fields can share their research, experience and ideas to come up with better, smarter solutions. Not only does this allow people far away from each other to work together, but it also reduces the environmental impact people would normally cause from traveling to meet with each other It allows for paperless communication like email and online bill paying to reduce the amount of trees cut down It allows companies to reduce shipping and manufacturing impact and to reach a broader audience
Sometimes people can get so excited about using a new technology that they overlook the negative impact on the environment. But, it’s very important that we use technology in the smartest and most responsible manner, so that we are solving problems, not creating more for the future.

- Students who are especially active on social media don’t spend less time studying.
What are the disadvantages of smart devices in school?
Cons of digital devices in the classroom –
Harmful effects of digital devices: There are concerns from the, While there is no direct evidence of harmful effects, the EPA discourages too much exposure for students who have video screens in front of their faces or computers in their laps. If students frequently use these devices at home, additional exposure at school could be viewed as harmful. Inappropriate materials: While schools can limit the availability of websites that can be viewed on their network, students may find links that slipped through the system. There will also be times that students will not be accessing the internet through a monitored network. Distraction from schoolwork: With the temptation of social media and texting in their hands, students may focus solely on their social life instead of the lesson plan. Child predators: Child predators are a problem everywhere. Using digital devices at school creates just that much more exposure and potential danger for students. Cyberbulling : This is an increasing issue that’s grown exponentially in recent years. Permitting use of digital devices in the classroom could potentially lead to more of it. Provide a disconnect: While some believe digital devices make for greater connections for students, there are also those who believe too much time with digital devices disconnects students from face-to-face social activities, family communications, and nature. Digital devices in the classroom could lead to an even greater disconnect. Could widen the gap : Technology spending varies greatly across the nation. Some schools have the means to address the digital divide so that all of their students have access to technology and can improve their technological skills. Meanwhile, other schools and/or lack the means to provide economically disadvantaged students with loaner iPads and other devices so that they can have access to the same tools and resources that their classmates have at school and at home.

Is technology making us lazy or smarter?
7 Ways In Which Technology Has Made Us Lazy 31/05/2022 | Offshoot Books Technology has made our lives easy and interesting. With new inventions, it has made many things possible. Before the invention of telephone or mobile phone, who would have imagined that they would be able to talk to people living far away; in fact, can even see them while calling.
Who would have thought that cutting, chopping or cooking food be this much easier? Today, we cannot imagine our lives without the gadgets, machines and internet, of course. But, have you ever thought that how the cons of technology are under wraps. No doubt technology has made our life easy, but lazy too.
When we are getting everything at our doorstep, we restrain ourselves from doing hard work. So, when you don’t like to leave our bed to do those necessary tasks, that you probably do with just one click, we bring you some of the reasons how technology has made us all lazy.1.
Delivery at your doorstep: Technology has made shopping so easy that you can get anything at your doorstep. Delivery services and online shopping has evolved so rapidly that one doesn’t have to leave home at all, to buy anything. From clothes to shoes, groceries to restaurant orders, laundry make up, house cleaning, you name it and it is offered at your convenience.
Therefore, when you are getting everything so easily, you don’t have to move out of your home and get things yourself.2. Checking-in with loved ones without actually doing so: With technology at its best, people talk and discuss with each other a lot without meeting or sitting together.
There are many apps and social media networks where people actually talk and connect with each other these days. Two people sitting together at two different parts of the world can talk and see each other anytime they wish to. But, it has also created differences between those who can actually stay and be together.
There is no connect between the people even if they are so-called connected. Technology has made us closer but technically has made us far.3. Connected through social media: Social media has made the world a small place so much so that things and people in far off places too seem to be very close to you.
You are connected to everyone from any part of the world. You can do and connect with anyone easily via social media but does not meet, greet or hang out with them in person. Technology has made you lazy as you only spend time on social media networks and forget to socialize in real. Moreover, you spend so much time on social media platforms that you forget to do many a things and do not pay attention to your work.4.
Ditching the bookstores: For the true book lovers, the smell of the pages of a book is as precious as the content in the books. They can spend hours and hours in libraries and bookstores to read many more books. But, with advanced technology and e-books available, people no longer visit bookstores and rather prefer reading the e-book version.
Hence, the technological advancement has impacted the love for books and have made people lazy for going to their favorite book stores.5. Asking for directions: With google maps and GPS, you no longer have to ask for directions from a third source. There is no need to stop at the gas stations or taxi or cab stands to ask for directions while you are heading to your destination.
You have completely stopped using the paper maps for directions. Asking for directions is on your tips now as a small voice form the GPS gives you instructions now-a-days for taking the right turn while driving, along with the duration and the expected congestion at the road.6.
Gyming at home: You don’t go to the gym anymore and stay fit and do regular exercises with ease at your home, thanks to the gym equipment easily available in the market. You do not go to the gym anymore and do the exercises at your home. Gyming at your convenient time and with your favorite tools is easy and simple and it makes you lazy as you no longer have to walk down or drive to go to the gym.7.
Switching off lights from bed: Technology makes you lazy to an extent that now you don’t even have to get up from your bed to switch off the lights or fan. With sensors and technological development, there are remote control systems with which you can switch off or switch on the lights.
